Nowhere does the Bible authorize a change from “the Sabbath” to “the (so called) Lord’s day.”

In fact, the Bible does tell us how to “celebrate” the resurrection of Christ, and in this instruction; it makes NO mention of any day of the week.

The only “basis” for this change by the Catholic Church, is her professed “authority” to do so; there is no Biblical injunction for this at all.

Sunday is not the Sabbath. Saturday is the Sabbath. Sunday is the Lord’s Day, established as such by Christ Himself in his rising from the dead on Sunday, and commemorated by the Church as such ever since.
Well said, this should put all debates to rest on the matter.

**
the only biblical evidence I can find is:
Quote:
“on the first day of the week the disciples came together to break bread.” Acts 20:7

“on the first day of the week let each one of you lay something aside, storing up as he may prosper.” In 1 Corinthians 16:2
This is really very little if any evidence justifying sunday as being the sabboth.**

**First off, how many times must the New Testament say something for it to be true?

Next, the Sabbath Coimmandment, as given in the OT, had NOTHING to do with worship and EVERYTHING to do with stopping work–an enforced rest that even extended to slaves and farm animals. The very word “Sabbath” means “cessation” or “vacancy.”**

I would agree with you. However, as a Jew I prefer that Christians worship on Sunday, because it is just one more indication that Christianity and Judaism are two separate religions.

“remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and the L-rd, your G-d brought you forth from there with a mighty hand and with an outstretched arm; therefore the L-rd your G-d commanded you to observe the Sabbath day.”

Moses is talking to Israelite, linking the shabbat to the God who brought them out of Egypt.

Adam, Abel, Enoch, Lot, Noah, Melchizedek, and Abraham did not observe the shabbat.

This is one of those questions that is really a problem for non-Catholic churches, though they sweep it under the rug. It is not, however, a problem for the Catholic Church, because she has been given the power to bind and loose heaven itself. The Catholic Church had the authority to make this change. OTOH, all the churches that reject the authority of the Catholic Church are on very flimsy grounds when they continue to worship on Sunday.

I agree; and I have mentioned this fact before, somewhere on CA here. Many “Protestants” bow down to the Authority of Rome on this point.

There remain many problems, however, with this specific exercise of “authority;” by Rome. First, it denatures the true character of the authority of the Church THAT GOD INTENDED, because try as she might, the Church of Rome cannot escape the fact that this change of “the day of worship” has gone beyond the bounds of Biblical authority.

You cannot base any actions on “authority” alone, apart from God’s Word. His Word is His Authority, by which we would do well to pay more attention to for this subject.

The Sabbath is not just “a day of worship” so in making this "change, Rome, Rome changed much more than just a “day of worship;” and she does presume to add and to take away from God’s Word to suit the Catholic doctrinal practice and preference. Just don’t try and justify it by the Bible.

I am curious why sunday rather than saturday is considered the sabboth. My girlfriend believes people celebrate the sabboth in error and that it really should be friday night to saturday night like it was in old testament.

the only biblical evidence I can find is:

This is really very little if any evidence justifying sunday as being the sabboth. This just alludes to them breaking bread on sunday and to lay something aside. It really doesn’t tell us to change the sabboth day from saturday to sunday anywhere and does not make this clear at all.

Maybe the disciples kept the sabboth but in addition did this on sunday as well?
Jesus rose on Sunday so it is fitting that we worship on Sunday.

It is “fitting” that we “worship” on any day. Not just Sunday. However, this is not the question. The seventh-day Sabbath is not just “a day of worship;” it is much more.

The Bible nowhere tells us to commemorate the resurrection on any day - let alone Sunday; but it does tell us exactly HOW to commemorate the resurrection. Does anyone reading this know what the Bible actually says on this point?

Sunday is the first day of the week, connoting the beginning of creation. Since we are born into a new life and re-created through Jesus’ resurrection, we worship and praise the LORD on the day when the new creation started in Christ.

Sabbath: old wine skins vs Sunday: new wine skins

Nowhere in the Bible will you find the seventh-day Sabbath described this way.

Did I claim that my description was taken from a verse in the New Testament? 🤷

Where in the Bible do you read that Jesus asked His disciples to record His Gospel in four different writings? Where in the Bible do you read that Jesus asked His disciples to read the four Gospels and other books of the New Testament when they come together to worship? 😉

Actually; I did not say anything with the phrase “New Testament.” I said “The Bible” and was intending to implicate BOTH Old and New Testament…

Once again; does anyone know what the Bible actually says about “changing the day of worship” “in honor of the resurrection?” What does God tell us about how to commemorate His Son’s resurrection? And does that have anything to do with “Sunday” or any other day of the week?

Agreed, Saturday is the Sabbath, the “close” of the old creation, Sunday is the Eschatological “First Day” of the New Creation. Sunday has not supplanted Saturday as the Sabbath, Saturday remains the Sabbath.

Christ is now our Sabbath Rest. He is the Sabbath Rest prefigured.
I think the Saturday Sabbath is a prefigure of Jesus being laid to rest in the tomb. He was laid to rest on the Friday night - the start of the Saturday Sabbath. The Father finished creating the world on a Friday, and Jesus finished redeeming the world on a Friday.

Admittedly, some protestants don’t believe Jesus was crucified on a Friday - so this argument won’t work for them.

But, I think the Saturday Sabbath has been fulfilled by Jesus. :twocents: And the day of the resurrection is more appropriate for our day of rest. (Also, in ancient Rome, it was illegal to be a christian, so if you observed the Saturday Sabbath they would have fed you to the lions. So, when in Rome, do as the Romans do.)

That is not a good example of wine and wineskins. The old wine is Torah in the old wineskin which is the old testament.

Now look at the new wine which is from Jesus and found in the bible NT. What you have done is that you have put the new wine with the old wineskin and bound the new testament with the old one… Jesus had advised that should not be done.

Saturday and Sunday are not any wines or wineskins.

You don’t understand the divine protection that is implicit in the power to bind and loose heaven. Since heaven cannot be bound to anything false, or loosed from anything true, it follows that when the Church exercises this authority she is protected from error by God himself.
You cannot base any actions on “authority” alone, apart from God’s Word. His Word is His Authority, by which we would do well to pay more attention to for this subject.
As mentioned, the authority of the Church goes hand in hand with divine guidance.

“Justify it by the bible” is simply an invented standard born of the Protestant Reformation, not a divinely given standard.

As I have said before; Catholics do denigrate the authority of God’s Word, this is a clear example. God’s Word is the Church’s “authority” it is never the other way around.
