I agree; and I have mentioned this fact before, somewhere on CA here. Many “Protestants” bow down to the Authority of Rome on this point.
There remain many problems, however, with this specific exercise of “authority;” by Rome. First, it denatures the true character of the authority of the Church THAT GOD INTENDED, because try as she might, the Church of Rome cannot escape the fact that this change of “the day of worship” has gone beyond the bounds of Biblical authority.
You cannot base any actions on “authority” alone, apart from God’s Word. His Word is His Authority, by which we would do well to pay more attention to for this subject.
The Sabbath is not just “a day of worship” so in making this "change, Rome, Rome changed much more than just a “day of worship;” and she does presume to add and to take away from God’s Word to suit the Catholic doctrinal practice and preference. Just don’t try and justify it by the Bible.
Paul stated in Colossians 2:11-17 “In Him you were also circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, by putting off the body of the sins of the flesh, by the circumcision of Christ, 12 buried with Him in baptism, in which you also were raised with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead. 13 And you, being dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He has made alive together with Him, having forgiven you all trespasses, 14 having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross. 15 Having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it.
16** So let no one judge you in food or in drink, or regarding a festival or a new moon or sabbaths, 17 which are a shadow of things to come, but the substance is of Christ.**”
Christ is Lord of the Sabbath (Mark 2:28) and He abolished the Sabbath requirements. Before the Church mandated Sunday as
the Day of Worship to be observed by the universal Church, the early Christians probably celebrated Mass whenever an Apostle was available to celebrate it.
“Romans 14:5-6”**** One person esteems one day above another; another esteems every day alike.**** Let each be fully convinced in his own mind. 6 He who observes the day, observes it to the Lord; and he who does not observe the day, to the Lord he does not observe it. He who eats, eats to the Lord, for he gives God thanks; and he who does not eat, to the Lord he does not eat, and gives God thanks."
After they had enough priests (i.e. bishops, elders, fathers) to celebrate the Mass for the Church on a weekly basis, then they designated the Lord’s Day, (Resurrection) Sunday, as the main day set aside for worship. (cf. Acts 20:7, 1 Corinthians 16:2)
And the Apostles had every right to change these rules pertaining to the Sabbath because Jesus Himself gave them the authority to “bind and loose” and He tells them that their decisions will be honored in heaven:
Matthew 16:18-19 “And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it. 19 And I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.”
The “keys of the kingdom” are a sign of “authority” in the ancient world and these “keys” were only given to Peter as head of the Church.
Matthew 18:18 “Assuredly, I say to you, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.”
Here Jesus gives this “binding and loosing” authority also to the other apostles but He does not give them the “keys.” They are reserved for Peter and his successors alone. The “keys” are meant to be passed down to the next person after Peter can no longer be head of the Church like the keys of the treasury are passed down to a steward who has been entrusted with them. When the steward can no longer keep the keys, then another steward is appointed.
The writer of Hebrews asserts his authority as one of the leaders of the Church in Hebrews 13:7 “Remember those
who rule over you, who have spoken the word of God to you, whose faith follow, considering the outcome of their conduct.”
