I agree. We have a local thrift store run by our local parish, and we have given many times from our own closets there. There are many good ways to help the poor, and we have a duty as Catholics to help the poor. I have a 3 set volume of stories from the lives of the saints, and my kids are always looking for ways to model what the saints have done to help the poor. I think it would be very good if the USCCB pulled away from funding political agitation groups, and got back to the basics found in the lives of the saints. If this is your decision, not to give cash but to donate goods and services, that is good. But organizations, such as our local St. Vincent de Paul Society, need cash, too, to do all of the good work that they do. They not only help the poor and the marginalized by giving out food and goods and paying some utility bills etc. but they also employ people to run their thrift store. And they have built a women’s shelter with the help of donations from many people. Many people donate their time, services, goods and cash to make our local St. Vincent de Paul the success that it is. I would not try to persuade people not to give cash to good organizations like St. Vincent de Paul.
