why is the Catholic Church the only one that has a "service" every day?

Because, strangely enough, that’s when the largest crowds come, if you are out in the 'burbs. Downtown, Mass is typically at noon or 5:30 pm, to get the working people, but out in the 'burbs, people come for Mass at 9:00 am. We have tried having 7:00 am Masses for working people, but they just don’t come.

Catholics also have these kinds of things.

At my suburban parish:

Monday: 7:00 am Sandwich making for the Drop Inn Centre (making lunches for homeless people)
9:00 am Mass. 6:30 pm Cubs 7:00 pm Junior Youth 7:00 pm KofC men’s club

Tuesday: 9:00 am Mass; 10:00 am Bible Study; 7:00 pm Brownies; 7:30 pm CWL (women’s club)

Wednesday: 9:00 am Mass; 10:00 am Monahan Club meeting (Seniors’ club); 7:00 pm Senior High Youth; 7:00 pm Rosary Prayer Group; 7:00 pm Girl Guides

Thursday: 9:00 am Mass; 10:00 am Shawl Club (knitting club where they knit shawls for nursing home residents); 5:00 pm Inn from the Cold; 7:00 pm Baptismal Preparation meeting; 7:00 pm Parish Council Meeting;

Friday: 9:00 am Mass; 5:00 pm Wedding Rehearsal (wknd wedding #1) 7:00 pm Wedding Rehearsal (wknd wedding #2);

Saturday: 9:00 am Mass; 10:00 am special event (ie: Cooking classes for the newly married); 12:30 pm Wedding #1; 2:00 pm Wedding #2; 3:30 pm Confessions; 5:00 pm Anticipated Mass of Sunday.

Sunday: 9:00 am Mass; 11:00 am Mass; 1:00 pm Baptism; 2:00 pm Young Adults Group
These extra sessions are great for everyone, we should attend more.

OK, so protestants work hard, Catholics work less, but you both commonly work for us :D:D:D:D
Actually I would say that catholics work harder than protestants …for the simple fact that they are working hard at resisting our attacks at them! 😃

I guess at least liberal protestants will have an easier time adjusting (since they’re much more flexible than conservative evangelicals or Catholics) when science finally discovers the origins of the universe, comes up with a unified theory of physics, and proves that the roots of our consciousness is entirely between our ears 🙂

Do you want to forever live in darkness? :D;);)😛

What is a catechuman? Is it someone in RCIA?
There are two terms used in RCIA. Catechumens refer to the unbaptized. The baptized are referred to as candidates for reception into the church.

Half a century ago Erik von Kuehnelt-Leddihn told us that the work-ethic is a Protestant invention. Catholics know it is the curse for original sin. Gen 3:17-19 😃
wow… that was interesting… i didn’t ever look at the Prot work ethic like that…

i always hated the sound of it though… as though thye were trying to imply that Cathollics are lazy… :mad:

well, good CAthlics are not spiritually lazy… and that is what counts…

the meaning of life is to fight the devil and win… at every turn… receving our reward in heaven…

the meaning of life to a protestant seems to be work, work , work and then get your reward in $$…

just being honest with the way i think… i do realize that protestants have Luther et al to blame for their misery… (whatever m isery we are talking about)

OK. Or maybe there’s an invisible serpent slithering around my brain (although I haven’t heard him speak yet) :eek:

I guess the old adage is true … delusion compounds delusion :confused:

urrrrrr
don’t u/stand the 2nd statement…

the 1st… there is one of those in everyone… and we all hear him…

welcome to the human race… 😦

yeah OK :confused:

You can blame an invisible man for your faults if you like (we’re all free to believe whatever we want, no matter how silly) … I prefer taking personal ownership and responsibility of my character and behavior. I have faults, sure, but as I discover my weaknesses I fix them. I don’t give myself paranormal excuses for not meeting the highest standard.

Sure, we all have limitations, but they’re limitations randomly imposed by nature and circumstances, not a punishment, reward, or undeserved fate (whether good or bad) delved out by a god or devil. That’s just ancient superstition!

🤷

Ah, heh… a priceless anti-protestant line! 😉 You did make me laugh! 😃

It’s nothing to do with money. But I often wonder why the church is open on weekdays at the exact time that most normal people would actually be at work! 9:00am.

It is a good question though, why everyday?

I don’t know why, but I can tell you this much;

My Methodist Church;

Sunday; normal service (not called mass). 9:00am & again at 6:30pm

Tuesday; Bible study 7:30pm

Thurday; Alpha course. 7:30pm

Friday; Mens Discipleship 8:00pm

Saturday; Womens Discipleship 8:00pm

There is also football classes and acting classing some where in there. 😃

Any more questions?

xxXx zundrah xXxx
Football classes and actung, you got to be kidding

We don’t blame the Devil for our sins and then go on doing the same thing - not at all. Rather, we recognize who it is that we were listening to when we sinned, go to Confession to confess our sins, and resolve to avoid the Devil and all his pomps in the future, so as to avoid committing any more sins.

I don’t know of any sincere Christian of any denomination who would consider it acceptable to continue committing sins. That seems to be more of the role of psychiatry, where every sin becomes a “disorder” that “just can’t be helped” and has to be “coped with.”

I think the work-ethic may be more Calvin than Luther. I have heard it claimed that the idea of predestination appeals most strongly to the middle class. There seems to be an underlying expectation that those predestined to salvation will be successful in this world. Thus you work hard to be successful so that all will know that you are saved.

I don’t want to claim that some one actively espouses this. It’s just that it is a reasonable conclusion that may weigh on the subconscious.

… i believe people are obligated to go to Mass on either Sun or Sat night… regardless of whether they went , say, all during the wk…

but… could be wrong…
***anyone know the answer to this??? ***
The priest can allow one to attend a different day of the week if one is something like a nurse or police officer & has to be at work during the weekend Masses. That has happened to me on occasion if I had to work from 7 am to 7:30 pm on both Sat. & Sun.

It is unbelievable how these threads can move away from the original question in such a dramatic way. It would be nice if everyone focused more on the initial question. As for the original question here is what I know. Once ordained, Priests must say mass everyday. That was the way it was anyway ( please correct me if I am wrong). Because of this rather than say mass alone, in some parishes mass is open to the people.However because of the shortage of Priests MANY parishes no longer have weekday masses. Who cares what time this occurs? I have seen weekday masses at 7 am, 8 am, 12 noon ,5 pm and 7 pm and everything in between. The time has no baring on anything except attendance. As for the $$$$ issue which was laughed at, don’t be so quick to laugh. EVERY mass the priest says is said in memory of someone. In some cases the mass is in memory of 3 or 4 individuals. A mass where I live costs $10.00 x 3= $30.00 or more. Mass is a revenue generating activity within the church. I have attended weekday masses which have lasted barely 15 or 16 minutes. I will be honest with you I would come out wondering what part of my spiritual life had been fed by a service which had lasted so short a time. Our Saturday evening mass lasts about 25 minutes which includes a 10 to 11 minute homily.
As for the Protestant side of things. I have never asked the question why we have no services on weekdays however this I know. In some cases such as in a retirement or nursing home setting or in our Christian Universities, and in other settings, there are daily services offered to those who live or study in those settings. I am not looking to pit one against the other but the comment was made that ALL Protestant ministers have to do is deliver a sermon and sing a few songs and that’s it. Well, our sermons last about 35 to 45 minutes and at times longer. Every service is created from scratch while respecting certain guidelines. The Catholic mass is the same everytime and the sermon can last but a few minutes. Some might say the quality is important not the quantity but when it comes to delivering the Word of God and feeding the flock then it must be right, not to imply a short sermon is not delivered correctly.We are expected to have a time of private devotion daily. It consists of readings from the Bible, prayer and reflections on various spiritual topics. This feeds the soul and brings one closer to God on one’s daily journey.
Personally I believe through God’s commandments we are expected to honor the Lord’s Day, the Sabbath,and we do that. God Blles.NLM

As the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass is the “Source and Summit” of all Grace, it is really not optional whether it is celebrated every day or not. It is absolutely essential that it is celebrated daily, the exception being Good Friday. Thank God for His goodness and His blessings!
God Bless!

Please help me understand what you are saying. Are you saying every Catholic church must celebrate mass daily or at least one mass somewhere must be said daily? I don’t understand.
Thank you .God Bless. NLM

As a fervant critic of Catolicism I will conceed this is a good thing. As a % of members only a small number go daily yet those that I have met are humble in spirit and active in spiritual growth. I will give kudos when due and in this case they are due. Well done.
