Ancient tradition holds that John was not married.

The Church adopted the rule of celibacy in accordance with Our Lord’s example and counsel in Matthew 19:12. So “men” did not make this up out of thin air.

Of course Jesus wasn’t married. There is no doubt about this. Firstly, we know this from Church teaching and secondly, if you believe Jesus is God, why on earth would He get married? :confused: He had a much more important reason for walking amongst us than to get a wife! It’s unfortunate when fiction like The Da Vinci Code is taken as non-fiction… by a Catholic no less!

I haven’t read this in a previous post so maybe I’m mistaken but…isn’t the wind beneath the wings of this complaint about married Priests a statement made by St Peter? In a description of what people will be like as this era closes he mentions that ‘they will forbid marriage’ or something to that effect.?

Our Lord Himself said that “Not all men can receive this saying, but only those to whom it is given” (Mt. 19:11).

The Church has, from St. Paul onward, recognized that the gift of celibacy is just that – a gift FOR the Church. The Latin Church has retained the discipline of celibacy for those men who act “in persona Christi” in imitation of Him.

I cannot imagine why anyone would find this to be objectionable. Perhaps the resistance comes from those who do not have “ears to hear.” OK. But that should not cause anyone to resent those who DO choose to follow Our Lord in this matter.

C’mon, Hisalone. REALLY. Do you see where this guy is coming from? He calls himself “Father” although he left the active priesthood and no longer has faculties, and he married. This essay is sloppy in its research – there WERE no monks and hermits in the first century; that came much later. Credibility: ZERO.

No, the Church didn’t get this one wrong… It is better not to marry (for many people anyway)… I have been celibate for a very long time… mostly because i see more clearly than ever (with the help of the catholic faith) that if i had married any one of the persons i thought i was in love with… I’ would be more :whacky: :hypno: :ouch: than i am now… There is even this one guy I thought God was TELLING me to marry… He does less for my mental stability than any of them… I frankly think marriage is the hardest vocation… which reminds me: it is a fact tht of all the professions, the clergy have the highest rate of “job satisfaction”…

As far as i know, St. Peter was the only pope who was married… and it is also my understanding that he & his wife decided to remain celibate for the rest of their lives?? correct me if wrong…

I am not a priest (female) but i know the great benefits of being celibate… which i have been for many, many yrs… I used to think i wanted to be married… Now i know i don’t (unless i find a very special man who can love me… and i have a lot of “issues” which probably preclude such a thing from ever happening 🤷 )… After knowing unconditional love from Jesus… I find it difficult to accept the so-called love of a mere human being… I think a lot of americans & others jump into marriage too quickly… then regret it, run for divorce court… or, if Catholic, stay married & miserable or whatever… Humans are complex… living with another complex being u don’t know… well, that can be very problematic… . it is a wonder any marriage lasts… I gave God hte prerogative to choose my husband for me… and so far, He has said NO to all the ones i have “chosen”… Maybe if others gave God this prerogative, there would be more celibate, un-married people… and far less divorce…

Here is an article from This Rock on the speculation that Jesus was married. While *This Rock *Certainly there is NO tradition in the Catholic Church that He was married. There is scriptural support for his affirmation of celibacy as arising from his own example, and despite the fact that several women are named as close disciples, none is identified as his wife.
 
As a rule, the Church only makes definative statements when there is a controversy. When was there a controversy over Jesus’s marital status worthy of a statement? It wasn’t pre-reformation. It wasn’t during the Reformation, they all held that he was single. It really wasn’t until recently. And, dispite all of the book sales, Dan Brown and his ilk haven’t really stired up enough heretics yet.

**Try reading the Nicene Creed, and the Apostles Creed, this is what Roman Catholics believe for 2000 years now, nothing in their about Jesus being wedded. The only reference of Jesus being described as a bridegroom in Sacred Scripture is in Ephesians 4-6, here you will find Jesus wedded to his bride the Catholic church, to impose Jesus had another wife other than his bride the Church, runs along the border line of calling Jesus an adulterer. I dont think, your wanting to make such a false Claim about the only begotten Son of God.

His only Bride is the Church, as mentioned already by others.

“In Ephesians 5, we have the famous exhortation for spouses to model their relationships on the relationship between** Jesus and his Bride—not a woman but the Church**. It’s hard to understand why this analogy would have been used if Jesus had a wife.”

And where was His wife throughout the major moments of His life? She wasn’t mentioned as being at the foot of the cross. Wouldn’t Christ have asked the Apostle John to look after His wife, too? We know He only asked John to look after His mother. And wouldn’t his marriage be mentioned in the Bible? And further, what does that say about your understanding of the nature of Christ’s divinity, that you can conceive of God marrying a woman? I think it’s odd that one could imagine that God would have intercourse with one of His creatures. It’s rather perverse and pagan, really.
