The Universe is so vast because God gave it just enough matter so that an intelligent being capable of ensoulment (humanity) would emerge only once in its existence.
There is a battle over humanity between God and Lucifer whom Lucifer won, so he thought, at the emergence of the first ensouled man and woman, Adam and Eve. But God, in his infinite wisdom, became man himself through his only begotten Son to enable man to emerge as the victor over Lucifer in this battle, which occurs over human history. Ever human who lives and dies in Christ becomes a saint who joins Jesus and Mary and all the saints in that victory, and in the spoils, intimate nuptial union with the Blessed Trinity. Since humanity is immersed in time and generational, the battle must play out with each individual over human history.
God’s victory is definitive and singular. He does not have to keep defeating Lucifer with a succession of any other hypothesized evolving extraresterrstrial intelligent life. Therefore, the Earth is unique in all of the Universe. The conditions for the emergence of life are unique to the Earth. Expenditures for the search for extraterrestrial life are futile. Preservation of Earth’s unique environmental conditions is paramount.
To hold otherwise is tantamount to saying that God does not exist.
