I think that we are drawn to a **good **person, who’s belief system and how theyI would say he ‘attracts crowds’ because people can see and feel his ‘peacefulness’. It is on his face, in his eyes and in his words of wisdom.
People are only trying to find their spirituality, and he offers a gentle way of life. He doesn’t say ‘this is the right path’ or ‘that is the right path’. We are all on a spiritual journey after all. He just ‘offers’ his wisdom in the hope it can effect many in a positive way, and change attitudes and therefore bring more peace to the world.
I get it. I understand why people are drawn to him. Yes, it is a bit ‘modern’ to be into Buddhism at the moment, they are selling statues etc everywhere in cheap shops now, prayer flags etc. But you get past that, you get to the deeper meaning in it all.
Meditation, acceptance of others and their beliefs, being of service to others, loving your brothers and sisters.
I would love to see him or the Pope. Being in the presence of peaceful, spiritual people like that can only help your journey… I think.
Blessings.
act it out in their lives, matches! From what I have seen and read of The Dalai Lama, well, he ticks all the boxes and I agree with your posting.
In the early sixties The Catholic Church in a gathering called The Second Vatican Council, the Leaders throughout the world,in union with The Pope grappled with the issues that you raised. It then sent out a blue print in 28-10-1965 called **Declaration On The Relations Of The Church To Non-Christian Religions.**I will only quote a few lines ;but the whole book is worth a read and is a wonderful guide line for catholics like me to follow and to absorb it’s authentic spirit.
2 —'Buddhism in it’s various forms testifies to the essential inadequacy of this changing world. It proposes a way of life by which man can, with confidence and trust, attain a state of perfect liberation and reach supreme illumination either through their own efforts or by the aid of divine help."-----.
THE CATHOLIC CHURCH REJECTS NOTHING OF WHAT IS TRUE AND HOLY IN THESE RELIGIONS.She has a high regard for the manner of life and conduct, the precepts and doctrines which, although differening in many ways from her own teaching, neverthelass often reflect a ray of that truth which enlightens all man.YET SHE PROCLAIMS AND IS IN DUTY BOUND TO PROCLAIM WITHOUT FAIL,CHRIST,WHO IS THE WAY,THE TRUTH AND THE LIFE(Jn 1:6)In Him,in whom God reconcilied to Himself(2Cor.5:18-19),men find THE FULLNESS OF THEIR RELIGIOUS LIFE"–(FLANNERY EDITION).
in 3 it quotes—"The Church has a high regard for the Muslins—etc—‘in Hinduism men explore the divine mystery and express it both in the limitless riches of myth and the accurately defined insights of philsophy’----
So as you can see ,as a reasonably well informed Catholic believer,I have no hesitation of defending a person like The Dalai Lama, even though I do not think that he teaches “the fullness of truth” as The Vatican Council put it.
.May I finish with this quote 5—“Therefore,The Church reproves,as foreign to the mind of Christ, any discrimination against people or any harraament to them on the basis of their race, color, condition in life or religion.accordingly, following the footsteps of the apostles Peter and Paul, the sacred Council earnestly begs the Christian faithful to “conduct themselves well among the Gentiles”(1Pet2:12) and if possible,as far as depends on them,to be at peace with all men(cf.Rom12:18) and in that way to be true sons of the Father who is in heaven(cf.5:45).” quote from the same source as above named)–I have made bold and highlighted what I thought were the key elements.
Returning your blessings a hundred fold-peace!
