dzheremi, as expected you only managed to get a total blank from him.I did not use a dictionary, Planten. I passed Arabic 101.
Wow. “Salaat” and “Zakaat” are so technical, huh? You probably can’t find such technical words with a five second search for Wiktionary, huh? Oh, wait…
Anyway, who cares. My only point is that Arabic- while incredibly beautiful, rich, and interesting- is not some sort of amazing super-portal to God or whatever, and it really does behave just like any other language of the world. You don’t need to make up folk etymologies for every little thing that tie into your Islamic supremacist worldview, and even if you feel the need to do that to try to spread your religion, you are barking up the wrong tree for that here anyway. So don’t say things that are demonstrably false with five seconds of research. Do the research yourself and bring actual facts to the table!
No harm done. You did not hurt my feelings.
“Christianity” suits me just fine. I am a Christian, and happy to be so called. What I wrote is what some scholars say it original meant, with backing from various events in the Bible. It is certainly not applied pejoratively today outside of some very specific contexts (by hardline anti-Christ Muslims, Jews, Hindus, Atheists, etc).
From what Christians I know from Iraq and Lebanon have told me, this term can be very negative depending on the context (it isn’t always, but it makes some people uncomfortable due to the history of Islamic usage). I have never heard any Arab Christian use it to define himself or herself (I usually have heard and read “Masihi”, and that is the word I have used when Arabs have asked me about my religion).
“Too much research into the meaning of things”…? What were we talking about, then?
No, thank you.
