You all remember Jerry Springer show? Violence increases the show’s rating. It’s sad, but it is true.
That is a ridiculous comment.I always wondered why hockey was banned from the fighting?
I agree with this. When our city got a professional hockey league, the local media did many stories about the game. One of the best comments I heard was “Don’t watch the puck, try to watch the team and you will see the plays being set up.”That is a ridiculous comment.
European pro hockey bans fighting. The stickwork (high sticks to the face, cross-checking) is much worse than in the NHL.
Most people who whine and cry about fights in the NHL rarely or never watch the game. Their only exposure to it is on the nightly local news (this occurs the most in areas with no hockey team) or some short clip on ESPN. This limited exposure is more than enough to some people (milquetoasts who prefer cross-stitiching, perhaps) to consider themselves experts.
Fighting in hockey is not “permitted”. A five minute penalty is assessed for fighting. If one player is involved in three fights in one game - this used to be common with the Philadelphia Flyers - that player is ejected from the game. If a player leaves his bench to get into a fight, that player is ejected and fined.
Therefore, the bench-clearing fights of years past are just that - in the past. Fighting is penalized, not permitted. It’s just that players who fight are not immediately ejected.
I prefer the skating and scoring aspect of hockey. Hockey and football have body-to-body contact. In hockey, it occurs on ice and happens a lot faster. A good hit (bodycheck) is an important part of the game.
Once in a while, there are fights. It’s really not a big deal.
What a sad and uncharitable generalization to make.I feel sorry and also have some contempt for those who enjoy hockey fights and thinks its “part of the game”
wanna fight? hahahahahaWhat a sad and uncharitable generalization to make.
How man years have you played hockey?
I’d disagree with you on that. What I have always wondered is why hockey players, and occasionally other sport figures, are exempt from assault disorderly conduct laws. If fans pulled some of the stunts the players do, they would be arrested. Yet there is no distinction or exception written in the law to allow for extra curricular punching.
I’m not sure. What I have always wondered is why hockey players, and occasionally other sport figures, are exempt from assault disorderly conduct laws. If fans pulled some of the stunts the players do, they would be arrested. Yet there is no distinction or exception written in the law to allow for extra curricular punching.
I dislike almost all sports. I just find them boring. But hockey, I don’t know why, is very entertaining to me. I like the fact that there is constant action.I’m not usually one for generalizing, but I have yet to meet and maintain a friendship with someone who loves Hockey. My experience has been with these types a certain neanderthol way of life. We dont jive at all. I despise Hockey, dont consider it a sport at all…instead its a reason for brutality on ice. If ya wanna fight, be a boxer. Hockey disgusts me…not because of fighting, but because it has no place in the game. I feel sorry and also have some contempt for those who enjoy hockey fights and thinks its “part of the game”
Yeah, to me that seems kind cut and dry. Same reason boxers can punch each other, but you and I can’t on the street.I’d disagree with you on that.
If someone comes up to you on the street and sucker punches you, then yes I’d agree.
But a random sucker punch on the ice will result, most likely, in a game misconduct, and in the NHL atleast, a fine.
When two guys agree to go at it, its different…completely different than if one guy does and one doesn’t
Also, its a completely different arena. Two brothers wrestling at home is fine, two strangers wrestling on the street isn’t…same goes with hockey.
Not really the best analogy since you need one hand’s worth of fingers to count the number of pitchers who can throw 100mph. Of course the same may be true for NHL players who can slap a puck and make it go 100mph. Maybe I’m just being picky. Mind you, I’m a big Red Sox and Bruins fan (and Canadiens, a cousin of mine played for them and did quite well).Speaking to a physics major he told me that you are more likely to be injured by a baseball thrown at you than any fighter in the NHL. A 100 MPH baseball thrown at your body with NO protection versus a punch from an “enforcer” will always cause more hurt.
There is a lot of violence in the NHL but it isn’t from MUTUAL fights between 2 players. Its from the cheap shot work of marginal hockey players who use their stick as a weapon. THAT must be cleaned up.
That is not a very nice comment.I’m not usually one for generalizing, but I have yet to meet and maintain a friendship with someone who loves Hockey. My experience has been with these types a certain neanderthol way of life. We dont jive at all. I despise Hockey, dont consider it a sport at all…instead its a reason for brutality on ice. He also was a high school hockey coach for many years while he was a priest/administrator at a local Catholic High School years ago. He LOVES the game. He would use hockey analogies in his homilies all the time, and that made him all the more loved by his parishioners! We have parishioners who had him as a hockey coach and then as a priest! It was great! I don’t think a week went by where somebody did not invite him to a hockey game somewhere, and if he was available, he went!
