Why isn't fighting in hockey--banned?

You all remember Jerry Springer show? Violence increases the show’s rating. It’s sad, but it is true.

Whatevergirl…
(raising hand)I know why… I used to play hockey. Trust me, people don’t play hockey to fight like some would let you think…

Look at it this way, a puck is traveling at your head at 100 mph… your adrenalin starts pumping… somebody bashes you into the boards when you are skating pretty fast… adrenalin is pumping. It is such a fast and furious sort of sport that fights just happen. When I played, guys started fights with me too… these are the type of guys that would never hit a woman, but they lost their heads. Heck, I started an all out brawl once (not one of my finer moments) and within 20 seconds every player on both teams were fighting… my team mostly because they were defending me, the other team because they saw my entire team on the ice…

Seriously, do you know how much padding we wear? How fast things move? I am amazed there aren’t more fights.

Speaking to a physics major he told me that you are more likely to be injured by a baseball thrown at you than any fighter in the NHL. A 100 MPH baseball thrown at your body with NO protection versus a punch from an “enforcer” will always cause more hurt.

There is a lot of violence in the NHL but it isn’t from MUTUAL fights between 2 players. Its from the cheap shot work of marginal hockey players who use their stick as a weapon. THAT must be cleaned up.

I always wondered why hockey was banned from the fighting?
That is a ridiculous comment.

European pro hockey bans fighting. The stickwork (high sticks to the face, cross-checking) is much worse than in the NHL.

Most people who whine and cry about fights in the NHL rarely or never watch the game. Their only exposure to it is on the nightly local news (this occurs the most in areas with no hockey team) or some short clip on ESPN. This limited exposure is more than enough to some people (milquetoasts who prefer cross-stitiching, perhaps) to consider themselves experts.

Fighting in hockey is not “permitted”. A five minute penalty is assessed for fighting. If one player is involved in three fights in one game - this used to be common with the Philadelphia Flyers - that player is ejected from the game. If a player leaves his bench to get into a fight, that player is ejected and fined.
Therefore, the bench-clearing fights of years past are just that - in the past. Fighting is penalized, not permitted. It’s just that players who fight are not immediately ejected.

I prefer the skating and scoring aspect of hockey. Hockey and football have body-to-body contact. In hockey, it occurs on ice and happens a lot faster. A good hit (bodycheck) is an important part of the game.

Once in a while, there are fights. It’s really not a big deal.

I agree with this. When our city got a professional hockey league, the local media did many stories about the game. One of the best comments I heard was “Don’t watch the puck, try to watch the team and you will see the plays being set up.”

So that’s what I do. There is a lot of strategy in hockey and it’s quite hypnotic.

And of course, since I’m a figure skating fan, I love just watching the team skate.

Fighting is my favourite part of hockey 😃 I’ve been playing hockey since I was 4 and reffing for the last couple of years, and nothing beats a good bought in hockey, especially in those really boring games.
Most fights aren’t about hating the other guy and trying to pummel him to a bloody mess like UFC or random street fights are.
Most of the time they’re meant as a momentum shifter, a fan enticer, and a tema booster…everyone loves hockey fights.

One of my largest pet peeves are people who’ve never played hockey telling us fighting detracts from the sport…its a jolly good time IMO…its just like two young kids wrestling, but just a little more extreme 😃

I’d just like to add one more thing…

So many cheap shots we’ve seen this year and last, I think are attributed to a de-empahsis on fighting…
Back in the day if you knew there was a Tie Domi or Bobby Clarke coming after you, you wouldn’t go stepping on other people’s ankles or hitting them in the head with a stick like players such as Simon and Downie are doing now.

I’m not usually one for generalizing, but I have yet to meet and maintain a friendship with someone who loves Hockey. My experience has been with these types a certain neanderthol way of life. We dont jive at all. I despise Hockey, dont consider it a sport at all…instead its a reason for brutality on ice. If ya wanna fight, be a boxer. Hockey disgusts me…not because of fighting, but because it has no place in the game. I feel sorry and also have some contempt for those who enjoy hockey fights and thinks its “part of the game”

What I have always wondered is why hockey players, and occasionally other sport figures, are exempt from assault disorderly conduct laws. If fans pulled some of the stunts the players do, they would be arrested. Yet there is no distinction or exception written in the law to allow for extra curricular punching.

I’d disagree with you on that.

If someone comes up to you on the street and sucker punches you, then yes I’d agree.
But a random sucker punch on the ice will result, most likely, in a game misconduct, and in the NHL atleast, a fine.
When two guys agree to go at it, its different…completely different than if one guy does and one doesn’t

Also, its a completely different arena. Two brothers wrestling at home is fine, two strangers wrestling on the street isn’t…same goes with hockey.

Hockey fights really get the crowd going. There is bound to be some pent up anger. It’s going to happen. Seriously, go to a hockey game and watch the women during a fight.

I won’t respond to the poster who completely trashed hockey fans and the second best sport ever (after baseball) of hockey.

I’m not sure.

But I do know of a player who got arrested and charged with a vicious hit on another player. I think it was Todd Bertuzzi.

www.hansonbrothers.net What’s not to love? 😛

Sorry, I know nothing about hockey. I CANNOT FOLLOW that puck. I guess I need high-def TV or something.

I dislike almost all sports. I just find them boring. But hockey, I don’t know why, is very entertaining to me. I like the fact that there is constant action.🤷

Yeah, to me that seems kind cut and dry. Same reason boxers can punch each other, but you and I can’t on the street.

Same reason I can’t throw 100 mph fastballs at your head outside of a baseball game.

One is part of (or the whole) sport; the other is simply street violence.

Not really the best analogy since you need one hand’s worth of fingers to count the number of pitchers who can throw 100mph. Of course the same may be true for NHL players who can slap a puck and make it go 100mph. Maybe I’m just being picky. Mind you, I’m a big Red Sox and Bruins fan (and Canadiens, a cousin of mine played for them and did quite well).

That is not a very nice comment.

You then would not like our former priest or our new ones, or our priest’s friends, who are also priests.

Our fomer Priest (now retired) is one of the most loved, respected, kind, and holy men I will ever know. He truly is a wonderful man and has brought more people into the Catholic Church than we will ever know. :highprayer: He also was a high school hockey coach for many years while he was a priest/administrator at a local Catholic High School years ago. He LOVES the game. He would use hockey analogies in his homilies all the time, and that made him all the more loved by his parishioners! We have parishioners who had him as a hockey coach and then as a priest! It was great! I don’t think a week went by where somebody did not invite him to a hockey game somewhere, and if he was available, he went!

We have MN Wild season tickets. My DH took our priest and some of his priest friends to a game. They LOVED it! They were cheering and yelling and having a great time! :extrahappy:

PS…they even enjoyed the fights! They each expressed their thanks and said, “If you ever have extra tickets, let us know…”😃
