Why Marijuana in itself is NOT sinful

Civic responsibility, and this is my personal interpretation, doesn’t include following laws like not being allowed to buy a certain type of milk. Maybe if I knew more about the reasoning behind the law I would change my mind, but as of right now, I could care less who buys farm fresh milk. It certainly isn’t harming anyone physically (assuming the milk isn’t spoiled when it’s sold), and I think I can safely say it isn’t harming the economy. As sacrilegious as this is, I don’t care what the Bible says about following the law. I follow most laws because they keep society organized. Just out of curiosity, CWBetts, do you ever jaywalk?
The topic here is about if smoking marijuana is sinful…the CCC even says so. Your flippant attitude about not caring about what the Church says tells everyone that you are more concerned about what you want than about what God wants…the hallmark of moral relativism. And just so you know…I cross the street at intersections

90% of the people who go to our church J walk to get to Mass(the parking garage is across the street from the church). Walking all the way down to the intersection and waiting for the light to change takes to long. Enforcing this law at this location is ridiculous. Even my Franklin PD friends know that. Everybody does it including our parish Priests.

We’re called to obey laws, but more importantly God gave us brains to interpret these laws. Pharisees were the ones always harping on people for not obeying every technicality. If I told my priest that I was still going 0.5mph when looking both ways at the stop sign, j walked to get to church, and went 58mph in a 55mph. He would think I was scrupulous or something like that. I know, because my relationship with my priest is very good.

Yes we should obey laws as logistically as possible, but that doesn’t mean we become Pharisee on every little technicality.

Moejoe. Personally I would consult your priest on the milk issue to help you make good decision about this.

I’ll respond to the pot argument when the time in appropriate, but for the moment, understand it is still heavily debatable unlike many other more important issues.

It is not debatable. It is an illegal drug, the use of which is soundly condemned in the Catechism. If you think it is open to debate, I should remind you that the cafeteria is closed.

Um. Who says we are talking about legality? If you were paying attention to the posts, I think you’d understand that it’s done deal about how the church views breaking the law.

So if some of you guys are saying smoking marijuana is a sin why with all of the confessors I have brought this up to EVERY ONE informed me that it was not a sin? Should I listen to internet posters or to my confessors? 🤷

In fact marijuana has been de-criminalized in MA just recently. You simply get a ticket if you are found with it. 👍

I have watched the effects of marijuana in my peers as I grew up since the fifties and sixties. The guys who moved on to the hard stuff the guys who never moved on at all. They didnt even move out of their parents basement even when we were in our fifties they were still smoking up in the parents basement.

There are harmful effects to everything that we abuse. Drugs and alcohol alter perception reduce good inhabitions, and most importantly make it quite hard to make a sincere confession if you were about to die.

I am always reminded of one of our saints who was taken to hell and met people there. She questioned them and brought back this information. Like most men are sent to hell forever for sins of the flesh where most women are sent for over love of their children.

The youngest person she met in hell was a little girl who died at eight years old and was sent to hell for one mortal sin of using our Lords name in vain and not being sorry. Much is expected of us. We should never knowingly put our judgement or life at risk without serious reasons. Certainly not for kicks.

Honest question here: why did God create marijuana if it is sinful? Obviously it wasn’t for humans to use, so why add another temptation so that people could “ruin” their lives? Or is this part of the mysterious “Plan” and not for humans to know?

There are a great many things which have a correct use ans an incorrect use. The correct use of marijuana is for making rope and textiles. The correct use of opium is a medication. The correct use of our sexuality is procreation within the confines of marriage. The list goes on and on.

Fair enough. But what I meant was, why would God create a plant with a psychoactive cannabinoid if it were meant only for making rope and textiles?

My explanation, and I’m not trying to convince you of this, is that the plant contains THC because it was not created by God at all.

Okay lets nail down some botanological terms here.
Cannabis is a genus within the Cannabaceae family. Now within that genus there are 3 species such as C. Sativa for example. And within these 3 species are several sub-species such as White Widow for example. Some folks like to “reefer” to these sub-species as strains. There are several strains of cannabis. Not all of them can be used for hemp fiber production. The strengths and durability of certain strains don’t meet the quality of hemp manufacturers. In fact typically hemp has less than 1% THC content. Strains that have higher THC and cannabanoids content usually aren’t suitable. Some theorize this because these strains are designed to put their strength in THC content. In the same way, as a tobacco grower I know that Nicotinia Tabaccum has several sub-species that carry more or less nicotine content. Some ranging from < 1% to 14% respectively.

Cannabis began producing THC in its resin glands because it protects the plant from solar radiation - or that’s the best theory at this time anyway. As for why God made things develop this way, that’s beyond our comprehension. Why are tree-leaves green instead of blue? Why did God make poison ivy? Etc.

Also hemp actually originally contained normal - high levels of THC (excepting the hashish-crops of the East, which had, arguably, been selected in such a way as to be strong and produce lots of resin); after the U.S. Government banned marijuana farmers genetically engineered their crops to contain negligible levels.

There are plenty of other chemicals which can protect leaves from solar radiation, so this explanation seems to be grasping at straws if you assume that God is behind it.

Biologists are the ones who propagate this theory. Yes there are lots of chemicals which protect against radiation but different plants had evolved before in such a way that some chemicals were easier to make than others. The “proto-cannabis” had chemical pathways that made it easier for it to produce tetrahydrocannabinol than something else.

Oh no, don’t get me wrong, I believe you; I understand this is a pretty solid scientific idea. I just meant that if God had overseen the process, wouldn’t he have made the chemical something nonpsychoactive?

This isn’t necessarily true. Cannabis selected for hemp production traditionally had lower levels of THC even before the 1930’s. That’s why its called hemp and not marijuana. Hemp is cannabis used for fiber production, and marijuana is cannabis used for recreation, spirituality, and medicine. Farmers found that certain low THC cannabis has longer, stronger, and more usable fiber than cannabis that contained higher amounts of THC. Ironically the same strains of cannabis used for hemp had higher amounts of the CBD cannabanoid which actually block THC from reaching the receptors in the brain. Thus over the years however hemp growers became experimenting and looking for cannabis strains that had lower THC and higher fiber production. Meanwhile other scientists and researchers folks began looking for cannabis with higher THC and less usable hemp material. Eventually through selective breeding and (when practical) genetic engeneering hemp THC concentrations decreased in the industrial hemp we have today and increased in marijuana increased in THC content.

It’s a given fact that certain plants have higher chemical content than others, even if they are in the same family. For example tomatoes belonging to the same family as tobacco have a given nicotine content. Furthermore, certain tobacco has higher nicotine content than others. This nicotine content decreases as tomatoes ripen and increases as tobacco ripens.

For the record green tomatoes do have a high solanine and other alkaloid content. So don’t eat them unless they are fried in case which heat destroys alkaloids like solanine . It’s little things like these that make stare in awe when in comes to His beautiful creation. I’m absolutely fascinated by how God designed plants to react certain ways and produce certain chemicals.

Pzona,

These are questions that really don’t have a solid answer. Remember when Job tried to figure God out completely it ended up biting in the bottom. There are certain things and questions that we won’t know. Even as a devoted Catholic I still have trouble comprehending how Christ is in the Eucharist, but He is. What we do know is that God created plants with different chemicals and oils to protect the plants in many cases. We also know God also designed his creation to provide us with certain chemicals, oils, and materials for our use being dominate among them. It certainly doesn’t we mean have the right to abuse these gifts or exhaust them to the result of His creation being ruined either. I think if we knew everything about God and why He does/creates the things He does would ruin part of the reason why we were put on earth.

For the record, Christ is not “in” the Eucharist He IS the Eucharist. It works this way: We say that the substance of the Eucharist is Christ but it retains the ** accidents** of bread and wine. In Aristotelian philosophy (of which St. Thomas Aquinas was an adherent, and Thomism grew out of) the ** substance** of a thing is that which makes it what it is. A thing’s accidents are those qualities a thing has which are non-essential to what it is. For example if you have a wooden ball and a rubber ball, they both have the substance of being a ball, but one has the accident of wood, and the other has the accident of rubber. Now in the Eucharist, its substance is God. Its accidents, that is the non essential parts of the Eucharist, are bread and wine. Now back to our regularly scheduled discussion.

Sorr-rry, I mispoke. Of course He is the Eucharist. I NEVER doubted the fact that the bread and wine actually become Christ’s body and and blood. Not just bread and wine with Christ in it. Just wish some of my peers understood this.

There are a lot of posts on this thread! I am surprised. I’m thinking that there are a lot of pot smokers trying to rationalize their behavior. As with any debate, there are good points on both sides of the argument.

I smoked pot when I was younger. I haven’t smoked it in a long time. The main reason for me, that I don’t smoke pot, take other mind altering drugs, or drink alcohol is that the effect turns my mind into something that it is not. I feel that altering my mind puts a wedge between me and God. I want to be as close to God as possible and avoid anything that creates a distance.

I am not a bible scholar. I cannot say that smoking is right or wrong for others. We all have choices to make and in the end we will experience the consequences for our actions.

I don’t feel a need to rationalize a behavior I don’t think is wrong, but I am trying to explain my reasoning to others (if you haven’t guessed, I do smoke pot occasionally). I can honestly say I have a better understanding of the religious reason for not smoking pot after reading some of these posts, which is really what I was looking for.

As for psychoactive substances putting a wedge between you and God, I think that’s just a personal thing. Keep in mind that I’m not trying to convince anyone to try drugs or anything like that, but a lot of people say that certain hallucinogens (marijuana, psilocybin, LSD) give them spiritual experiences and make them feel closer to God. I realize that these, for a number of different reasons, are against Catholic teachings. But given that fact, why do some religions (some Native American systems of belief) use hallucinogens (peyote) as part of their services? What is the difference between these other religions and Catholicism? I can predict that some answers will include things like “we worship the one true God,” but would these other people be doing the things they do if they did not honestly believe that they were gaining something spiritually?

For some people alcohol can put distance between others and God, others it could be tobacco, racing, contests, ect… Still for others some of these things could put one closer to God. I know my hobby with tobacco allowed me to understand research further into His creation. Now let me just say that LSD is very dangerous given that it is inorganic properties simply fry the brain into believing it is in another world. It was simply an invalid medical discovery if you ask me. Once you take it the chemistry of the brain changes and can lead to unhappy flashbacks or even freak you out forever.

The difference between Catholicism and other religions is how we exercise faith. We don’t need drugs to interact with what we consider the Divine. Perhaps the folks who practice these other religions “need” such mind altering substances to visualize and interact with they call god because faith alone in these gods isn’t enough. Maybe they feel this is how they need to communicate with what they consider god or gods. If one’s system of religion feels the “need” for the use of something mind altering in order to see or understand their god, it doesn’t say much for the structure of their religion.
