So I haven’t been on here in a really long time, despite the fact I used to be a daily regular. I used to be gun-ho about the Catholic faith, God, and all things related. But after the downfall of my relationship 2 yrs ago, I have not been the same. I have become more cynical of life. I no longer believe things happen for a reason. I believe that there is a greater power (i.e. God) but don’t think he interacts with us or reveals himself through a book or religion. When people die and others say they are in a better place, I am not sure that is true. I don’t think there is a rhyme or reason for bad things or good things, just the simple fact we live in a broken reality where we define our lives and God does not intervene. I now work as a paramedic seeing difficult situations everyday and have yet to see God within these people and times. I behave immorally (according to Christian definitions) and regularly involve myself with more than one girl at a time. My college education is suffering. In general, I am depressed and miserable.

Here’s the kicker: if I think all that I just posted is true, why am I posting this here? I know that I felt good and I felt more alive when I did believe. When I prayed I was happy and felt something. But how do I know its not just a release of chemicals stimulating portions of my brain? You can say that was a design God came up with to mix the spiritual with the physical. Am I simply posting and searching just to make myself feel better? Is it God or is it my ego and other psychological faculties edging me towards something to make me believe that life isn’t so bad. Or is God using my own brain to help me, is it his way?

Why…the question is why for me.

I am no psycologist, I’m no apologist, I have a high school education but I truly believe things happen for a reason. Maybe God wishes you to examine yourself, your beliefs, and why Him? Prayer is a very strong ally and answers come in various forms. Please read, pray and speak with your priest.

Blessings and peace

I have become more cynical of life.
This is a hard saying but, you cannot trust human nature at all. That is why we must learn to trust God alone, even when life does not make sense at all.
I no longer believe things happen for a reason.
So everything just happens randomly and without purpose? In other words God created the universe and just left it subject to anarchy. This is what happens when we decide for ourselves what is true and what is not, instead of taking the Creator at His word and accepting it on faith and confirming with reason.
I believe that there is a greater power (i.e. God) but don’t think he interacts with us or reveals himself through a book or religion.
So you once were devout Catholic, you lost the Faith due to a failed relationship, and now you don’t even know which way is up. Why would you stake your entire faith, and therefore your soul on any earthly relationship? Either you never fully possessed the Faith, or you were reluctant to give up something in order to keep it. In order to obtain the various levels of Christian spirituality we absolutely must be willing to let go of anything or anyone that we hold dear in this life in order to love God as He loves us. So your problem stems from a lack of detachment.

Aside from that, regardless what you believe now, that in no way changes what is true. Truth that never changes, truth you learned from the Catholic Church.
When people die and others say they are in a better place, I am not sure that is true. I don’t think there is a rhyme or reason for bad things or good things, just the simple fact we live in a broken reality where we define our lives and God does not intervene. 1. Not everyone goes to “a better place”.
  2. God’s ways are not our ways. We do not always see how the invisible hand of God intervenes in our lives.
  3. You have forfeited your ability to see God in any situation because you are no longer open to faith or grace. You closed that door, but you can open it back up.
  4. By continuing in immoral behavior you open the door for the enemies of God to influence everything you think say and do. You are basically tormenting yourself and heaping misery upon your lifeless soul. Your soul is starving for grace and relief.
5.Because your soul is tormented by a lack of life-giving grace it is natural that you should be depressed. The soul is attached to the body. If your soul suffers it will manifest itself in the physical body. I have gone through a similar experience. I, too suffered with great depression and despair. Trust me your human nature cannot suffice on it’s own. You need the influence of the Divine to be fulfilled.

Okay now you are just going to drive yourself insane because you are attempting to abandon reason along with faith, which happen to be just two of the gifts God gave you for the purpose of finding Him so you can find true happiness. There is such a thing as over analyzing things and making them much more complicated than they need to be.

Yes, God gives us emotions and feelings to help us on our journey toward Him which begins here in this life. In mystical theology they are usually called consolations. Obviously you are at a point where you need consoling. So don’t hesitate any more, just pray for His help and for relief and say what is on your mind. If you are angry with Him then let Him know it and ask Him to help you understand. Try not to be too disrespectful but I am sure He wants to hear it from you if you are angry.

Why you? Because you left Him that’s why. Did you think that He would not pursue one of His precious creations who just up and walked away from Him. No! Divine Love is too strong to just let go. In fact He has never left your side but you have ignored Him and His broken heart. Now that you are suffering and miserable He wants to console you and be your healer. Just let Him. There is not enough people in this world that will let Him give Himself to them that is another reason why you do not see God in those people you mentioned. Perhaps He needs you to be the light of Christ for those suffering people?

I can feel your pain! I offer my tears and my prayers on your behalf to the Divine Lover, Jesus Christ our hope.

Sweet, Sweet, Jesus bring your peace into the life of this young man. Renew a rite spirit within him, and give him rest in you Jesus. Amen.**
Please send your Guardian Angel to St. Padre Pio
to help you, and please offer up mentally “All for
the Sacred and Eucharistic Heart of Jesus, all through
the Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart of Mary, all in union
with St. Joseph”. Francis Cardinal Arinze uses this prayer daily, and teaches it.

It is easy for us to “feel” God’s love and presence when things are going our way. It doesn’t require too much effort to believe that He interacts with us when our prayers are answered in visible ways or when we are blessed by His grace to be fully aware of His love. We all know these things on an intellectual level and think that we will be able to sustain faith in the face of great hardship. Yet, when the chips are down, we fall to the temptation to doubt and question everything, including God’s love and plans for us.

What we see in our lives is only a tiny portion of the big picture. You, as a paramedic, only get to observe the absolute worst of human life - the tragedies and disasters. You do not get to see the impact such events have beyond your brief exposure and therefore can not possibly be in a position to judge what God has intended for any of these folks. It is not that much different for us in our own personal lives. While the present moment may be nearly unbearable, the big picture belongs to God alone and this is where the strength of our faith is called into play.

For every crisis that occurs in my life, I pray for the wisdom to find the smallest, most imperceptible good. I lost my job in February and am nearly out of savings. Despite my exhaustive and aggressive efforts to find another, I’ve had no success. It would appear that God has left me on my own. Yet I still have enough money to get by - through an extension (completely unexpected) on my unemployment and very intermittent jobs here and there - just enough to pay the bills. He is literally giving me my DAILY BREAD and nothing more. I don’t know why. I’ve gotten angry. I talk to Him all day every day asking, “wassup?” but there is no “felt” response. My job, right now, is to “keep the faith”, as it were, and keep excavating through the crud in search of the good. It’s hard work. But believing in anything requires work on our part.

As flawed humans, we can at least admit that we can’t see that big picture the way our Creator does. I may lose heart and my trust in Him may waver, but I know without a doubt that He is bigger, smarter, and sees through a greater lens that I. That much I can trust.

Ah… grief… my friend.

With any loss, grief follows. As we age, there will be more loss; our parents; some of our friends; some of our relationships; jobs; years wasted in ???; perhaps, even one of our own kids. All these, I dare say, are normal to living… and the longer we live, the more there are. Also, with a loss there comes a ‘readjustment’ period. This is why it is good to face grief head on. Like if you were making $1000 and now you are making $900… loss of $100… the budget will have to be readjusted. On the way UP, say when one makes $1100, the readjustment is easy, no grief. But on the way DOWN there is a grief for the loss. Even if one has a good relationship with God, and it seems to be lessening… perhaps, it’s just stabilizing (no gain but no loss either). All these bring to mind a life re-evaluation. To take inventory of where we are, what we have, what we are, where we want to go, how we may be able to do that (if we are able to do that). This re-evaluation is serious (some look at it as “Depressing”), and much more serious on the DOWN swing… more smiles on the UP swing. Remember, the cup can only hold 8 oz, then it is full… we notice when there is only 6 oz in the cup and want to add the other 2 oz again. But ‘which’ 2 oz do we want in there.
Look at Nature. There is Spring (gain); Summer (stabilize); Fall (produce fruit); Winter (rest {loss})… then comes Spring. Or the Day. Sun rise; Midday; Sun set… night… Sun rise.
Another example (this of my own thought process having all of those losses mentioned above), if you go East, you will go East forever, unless ‘you’ turn around, then you will go West. However, if you go North, far enough, you will soon be going South and will have not changed the direction you were going. It is this reason I say grief is my friend… Go North with it… take it to the max (pole)… it is amazing how South comes into it (thank the Good Lord for that).
