you’re saying lack of a coat rack is keeping people way from the catholic church? and lack of a coat rack is an embarassment so that you will no longer invite your friends to the catholic church?Your parishes are probably spending yayhoo dollars on evangelization to attract people to your churches, and I’m suggesting that you just put in a coat rack and you may find that people will perceive your church as friendlier. Maybe not, but isn’t it worth a try to save souls and bring people home?
Maybe the reason why I think it’s serious is that I have friends and relatives who are NOT Catholic that I would like to see become Catholic. I am truly concerned about their souls.
when you go the the grocery store, what do you do with your coat? i don’t think i’ve ever seen a coat rack at a grocery. maybe we should all stop grocery shopping because the hospitality is not there???
why are you so insistent that we change? was the coat rack the central focus of your conversion? every year we always have a new group of people in our RCIA class. are you saying we would have more if we had a coat rack?So why are you so resistant to providing a place to hang a coat? It’s such a little simple thing, like putting a mint on a pillow. But it’s so kind and welcoming and cozy and family and hospitable and friendly. Why are you determined to continue doing things the way you’ve always done them?
you think coats on during mass looks weird? funny, i don’t think it looks weird at all.But many of us converts think it’s weird that you leave your coats on when the temperature is comfortable in the sanctuary. We think it looks unfriendly. We also sing really loud during Mass and we actually open the Missal to the Bible readings. So maybe we’re the weird ones, not you.
You might just learn a simple little secret that possibly might help reach out to Protestants and ex-Catholics and bring them home to the Catholic Church. I know there are deeper issues, but this is a simple place to start–being hospitable and offering a place for someone to hang up their coat.
and what is the secret to reaching out to protestants? if all churchs have a coat rack then everybody will cease to be protestant?
of the many of the conversion stories that i have read here i don’t recall a place to hang your coat as the main deciding factor to entering the church. just the fact of getting up the courage to cross the threshold and see what’s inside was the biggest hurdle. and the mass itself was what brought them back again.
with charity i say, don’t worry about coats or coat racks. i personally think that a rack of orthodox catholic pamphlets readily available and not tucked into an obscure corner would be more friendly and more useful to attracting converts and educating catholics alike.
