Why some Christians feel more threatened by homosexuality than other, more violent, sins

Yup a disorder, just like divorce, in fact the Catechism uses the word inordinata to describe both (along with masturbation). They are all ordered away from order, id est disordered. I have to admit I’ve never seen someone try to deny divorcés and divorcées marriage.
As is often pointed out, when there are pro-divorce or pro-masturbation parades demanding the moral accpetance of their notions, we can discuss this. When July is desiganted as masturbation-pride month, we can talk.

The homoseuxal legitimacy movement was thrust on us. They attacked God’s status quo.

And there is no moral equaivalency between divorce and homosexual behavior, or masturbation.

As someone who has several close gay friends and relatives I have to tell you how incorrect and downright cruel that rant was.
I;m not sure he could have been more charitable and Christian if he’d tried. I assume nothing short of embracing the lifestyle will be seen as cruel to you?

And there is no moral equaivalency between divorce and homosexual behavior, or masturbation.
Indeed as the CCC says:

2383 The separation of spouses while maintaining the marriage bond can be legitimate in certain cases provided for by canon law.176

If civil divorce remains the only possible way of ensuring certain legal rights, the care of the children, or the protection of inheritance, it can be tolerated and does not constitute a moral offense.

Homosexuality is a unique topic-and people really do love to talk about it!. It is a sin that few people have ever or will ever have any inclination to commit, so it’s really easy to look at “them” and even use them to avoid looking at the sins many people do have the inclination to commit. Thst’s why there is a whole lot more fuss about homosexuality than there is about divorce or adultery or greed or lust…or any of those sins common to a larger population of people.
This is just not true. There is more push back against this serious sin because there is so much effort is used in trying to normalize what is not normal. The effects of this effort are very serious especially to children.

The Catechism certainly suggests equivalent.

Except, you know, the Catholic Church.

The Church does deny divorcees re-marriage. Likewise it denies the sacraments to adulterers, fornicators, masturbators, etc. until they have confessed.

God Bless

It is, I’m sorry to say. It is religious folks, not gay people, who are being selfish. It is not selfish to want to be left alone, and not be told that their personal business, which harms nobody, legally prevents them from enjoying the same freedoms as their neighbors.

It is profoundly selfish, however, to presume to stand as spokepersons for God, the Creator of the Universe, and insist that complete strangers are nothing but poorly calibrated clockwork, and assert their right to stand as arbiters of how everyone else should live.

You are, in no way, entitled to have your opinions respected by the homosexual community. In turn, they are no more entitled to respect from you. What they are entitled to, given that the State has no demonstrated interest in prohibiting it, is the equal protection guaranteed by the 14th Amendment. Your problem is that you think you have legitimate right to deny them this (or expect your government to deny it for you) based on your presumed authority as religious people. Aside from the fact that there exists no compelling evidence that this authority is worth the Bible it’s printed on, the government explicitly denies that you have such authority.

I’m sorry, but this is quite amusing. You accuse gay people, who want the same rights as straight people, of being self-obsessed and narcissistic, while patting yourself on the back for spending a few minutes every week praying - that is, asking an invisible man who might not even be there - praying that he will relieve the suffering of CHRISTIANS in other parts of the world. Not Muslims. Nor Buddhists. Not the functionally a-religious - who might want a relationship with some God, if only they didn’t have to focus so much on finding food and not being murdered by drug-addled soldiers. None of these people who, incidentally, are destined for an eternity in Hell if they don’t manage to get their theological act together. Just the Christians.

I don’t know how many gay people actually pray for those living lives more unfortunate than their own. My guess is that few do. Part of the reason could be that if they’re going to commit to helping people, they have more practical ideas for accomplishing this than kneeling at one’s bedside and asking God to do all the heavy lifting.
But gay people don’t just want to be left alone. They are being left alone. They are free to engage in whatever sexual practices they want (no matter how sinful) and make any private contracts they want in regards to property, children, power of attorney, etc.

What they are asking for is societal approval of their behavior as “just as good” as real marriage. Well, newsflash, it isn’t.

God Bless

No. They’re looking for “legal approval” that their relationships are just as good. And they’re not being left alone - your faith does not instruct its adherents to leave people alone. It tells them that everyone who is not an adherent is a broken person and in need of fixing. And some much more than others.

Well, and atheists don’t leave Christians alone either, you constantly state our beliefs are false. No one has the right not to hear unpleasant opinions about them. As long as neither of us tries to use force to impose our views on the other, we can say whatever we please.

Their relationships are not just as good, and Christian will object to being asked to say they are.

Divorce is not sinful, in and of itself. Only the attempt to re-marry w/o a decree of nullity is sinful, b/c the person commits adultery with the “new spouse”.

The Catholic Chuch does not permit remarriage w/o a decree of nullity.

Catholics don’t act like it.
What are we supposed to do, interrogate people on the way to Communion as to whether they are in mortal sin?

If a priest knows a Catholic is publicly living in an adulterous or fornicating relationship, he should deny him communion.

God Bless

Gay people aren’t trying to be seen as sinless - they don’t accept the implied premise that their acts are sinful. What they are doing is trying to be seen as deserving the equal protections of the 14th Amendment.

You need to get it out of your head that everybody else is walking around living life on your terms. Most homosexuals don’t lose one minute of sleep worrying about whether people like you think they’re violating God’s laws.
Code:
Obviously! But they have "Pride" parades to try to reinforce in each other the propriety of what they know in their guts is unseemly. These parades are "in your face", disrespectful of children in the vicinity. But, of course, that's the point: Recruitment of the young. And the icing on the cake is that they get to use the decency of good people against them, knowing that they won't be beaten or imprisoned for flouting the morals of civil society.
Nothing will satisfy these deviants short of seeing the free speech of church people across America curtailed, and the buildings shuttered. :nope: Rob

No Simon, until gays became radicalized, most people couldn’t have cared less. Don’t mess with kids and our church, and you will be treated with respect. As long as I’m alive, man-on-man sex will be a revolting thought to me, but I don’t hate them. Some of them I consider to be friends. And I don’t care if you believe me. Rob

This is a tiny, tiny proportion of gays and lesbians. Many gay people don’t want the “right to marry” and don’t march in any parades, nor are they out to recruit anyone. The worst segment of their tiny slice of the population is right out in front of the media trying to pretend that they really do represent ALL gay people. It’s not true. Pretty much NOTHING you see in the media is true.

I’m loving the psychoanalysis on this thread.

Oh, what a load of nonsense. Children don’t get turned gay by pride marches.

I’m sorry but this kind of implies that they should be beaten or imprisoned for “flouting the morals of civil society”.

I don’t think a civil society would imprison someone for going on a pride march.

Coz gayz are skeletor amirite?

I’m sorry, but I fail to see how that post was incorrect or cruel. It was a bit blunt and goes straight to the Truth, perhaps, but cruel? I don’t see it. “We just want to be left alone” has come a very long way to what we have today, which is “embrace us or else.”

Let me help you out.
I’m just saying, from what ASimon wrote he made it sound like gays didn’t give a hoot about anyone but themselves. Even though his immediate contention is that gays don’t care about being approved by Catholics… the ultimate contention, the underlying motivations for those beliefs would be not caring about other people in general.

“The full force of the law” doesn’t count for much in this case. The 1st Amendment is still the 1st Amendment, and you can still freely act like a bigot without legal reprisal, and I don’t support any effort to change that. As an atheist, I have to listen to people talk about how people who think like me should be put on public lists, alongside sex offenders, and be basically denied any realistic chance of winning political office. Ultimately, I can only sigh and await a more tolerant day. My existence is probably affront to more than a small percentage of my countrymen, but I’m not afforded any more right to be unoffended than they are.
Within a few years after the Bill of Rights was ratified, Congress passed the Alien and Sedition Acts, which ignored it. Back during World War I, Gene Debs was sent to prison for daring to criticize the Government of the United States. So the First Amendment is protection only if our leaders chose to honor its words. As your use of the term “bigot,” You beg many essential questions when you imply that someone who says homosexuality is wrong is ipso facto a “bigot.” Francis Parkman wrote a once widely read boon.”the Oregon Trail,” in which he described the life of the Dakota indians. Do you know how they treated homosexuals? They made them wear dresses, and do the work of women. That is a fair presentation of how homosexuals have been treated historically. A far number of those thought to be homosexual, of course, were not, but only what not many years ago were called “sissies.” Effemminate boys too puny to be included in masculine endeavors. Had nothing to do with religion, of course. The thing is, however, that
religion --or at least Catholicism and fundamentalism–share the blame because English law, like almost any law anywhere, regarded the practice as pernicious, with the exception of those societies that worship fertility gods.such as the people of ancient Canaan, who dwelt in Sodom and Gormorrah. It goes with a certain view not only of the divine but of humanity. The monotheism of Jews and Christians is not compatible with the idea of sex without boundaries. Of course, not even the Greeks, who freely practiced pederasty, had anything like gay marriage. Socrates may have liked the boys he taught, but he had a wife, and one must assume children. Alcibiades, who conducted himself much like a modern denizen of San Francisco, was scorned, but sex between “consenting adults,” was rejected as beyond the bounds of properiety.

This is just not true. There is more push back against this serious sin because there is so much effort is used in trying to normalize what is not normal. The effects of this effort are very serious especially to children.
There is absolutely no proof at all that there are any gay people who were “converted” because they saw a pride parade or knew a gay couple that got married. There would be no gay people at all if straight people stopped giving birth to them.
True. It’s the same as saying that ALL people who believe in Christ are like Fred Phelps and his family or that ALL people who are committed to their faith are like the Taliban. Those are the people that make the news, but they aren’t representative of all people who believe in a Higher Power.

It is likely you encounter gay people in your life that you have NO CLUE are gay. They go to work, they pay their taxes and they shop in the same stores and go to the same places you do. Your MD, your pharmacist, your lawyer or your accountant might be gay. You might even go to church with gay people who have chosen to follow Church teaching.

I stand by my opinion that for many Christians-gay people are a convenient group to use so that their own sins can be minimized. (at least in their own mind) People have done this since Jesus walked the earth, it’s human nature. If gay people didn’t exist, those Christians would find another group of “sinners” to use.
