Why suicide is wrong, when someone is in real pain

It is morally wrong because every moment of life is considered precious, even when one is suffering and nearing the end of one’s life. Life is regarded as a gift from G-d and it shows disrespect for G-d when we treat His gift badly or choose to relinquish it.
If life is precious in the eyes of god why natural death exist?

Sorry, I don’t mean to be flippant but your comment here seems to be the cop out for any sin that someone needs to justify. Simply stated. you are saying that sin is the only answer. Whereas in reality, sin is never the answer.

One who is in great distress and commits suicide may not be culpable of sin because they are not choosing death freely.

Suicide, for one who is not experiencing great psychological or emotional trauma is wrong because it is an abandonment of the virtue of hope. Christ experienced the greatest emotional, psychological and physical pain any one ever could and yet he never lost hope.
This is incorrect. Suicide is ALWAYS wrong and always gravely sinful. However, culpability may be mitigated depending on the circumstances and the state of mind someone is in at the time they kill themselves. That is why we still must have hope for the salvation of those who have committed suicide.

If there is no solution to end that pain, why taking your own life is wrong?
Why not offer your pain and suffering up? If one thinks their suffering is so bad look at Blessed Mother Teresa, did she end her own life when she did not feel the Lord’s presence? Life is a gift to take it away is like receiving a watch from your mother on your birthday and smashing it in front of her, but infinitely worse.

Not justifying, in some situations it could work, for example:
When in wars you are obliged to murder people, in some cases the only way from running from murdering others is to shoot yourself, or when you are dying and being in an extreme pain, where there is no other chance to survive or reduce that pain.
When some mafias or soldiers are going to skin me while I’m still alive, I would choose to shoot myself in the head or take a pill, in both cases I’m going to die, I would prefer a peaceful and painless death by my own decision instead of a barbaric painful death by the decision of soldiers.
Self-defense and just war are not considered “murder” - “murder” is defined as the taking of human life outside of the defense of self or home.

The holy martyrs did not kill themselves rather than be tortured - instead, they let their deaths by torture stand as a witness to their faith in Jesus Christ.

I need only to look to my own mother. She faced a painful death just last year. If I can face pain in my life with an ounce of her courage. :crossrc:

Without death, we would never be able to make it to heaven to be with God. But there is a difference in killing yourself to try and get there and letting death come by natural means. Life is precious to God because it gives us a chance to grow and to come to know Him. By death we are united with him. But we can’t join him by our own doing, which includes killing yourself. We need His help to be able to get to be with Him.

I know there are those who won’t agree with me, but I don’t consider those who jumped from the Twin Towers as committing suicide. I believe God surrounded them with His angels as they fell to their deaths.

What is a Just war? I believe in self-defense but not in a just war, aren’t all wars “Just” in the eyes of those who participate in it?

If they choose to be martyrs and have painful deaths, they are free, if others choose to make suicide instead of a painful death and they are not harming anyone by doing so, they are free as well, why first ones go to Heaven and second ones are destinated to Hell?

A) If the pain really does have no solution, then you will die naturally - there is no need to kill yourself.

B) If you aren’t dead yet by natural means, this signifies that there is a solution to the problem; you just haven’t found it, yet. Keep looking.

Every problem is temporary; even terminal diseases end in natural death. When you have run out of ideas, just wait - something will happen.

That having been said, my prayers go up for you in your pain. May God abundantly bless you and bring you to a happier more secure place.
But, what if you’re suffering from a very painful disease, knowing that you will die in a matter of weeks/months? Why is it wrong for someone to kill themselves, since they’re going to die but they’ll simply cut out the pain? What about cases in which the prison is suffering from something that won’t kill them, but would still make their life a misery, such as the case of Terry Pratchett and his Alzheimer’s?

I always wondered about that. Whether or not that would be considered suicide, Such a decision to have to make for those poor people. So sad.

As an atheist you probably won’t understand, but we see life as a gift. A gift from God.

My question would be, what’s the rush? Killing yourself doesn’t end the pain. Pain is a sign of life - it’s a sign that your body is resisting death, and seeking its own good health.

The pain of this world is not the worst thing that can happen to us.

Imagine how many souls you could release from Purgatory, simply by offering your pain as a gift to the Cross of Jesus Christ.

What an inconceivable and awful situation that must have been for those poor people, some of whom held hands when they jumped. Even if they hadn’t jumped, they would have been committing suicide by being killed by the fire and smoke. The odds of surviving were virtually nil in either case. The scene is still imprinted on my mind.

Was this question seriously asked?!?!?!

That is disgusting!!!

The Church bands suicide with good reasons. One its not the right way to solve problems. Two killing yourself is just as bad as killing someone else. Three it’s morally wrong.

And a list of many other reasons. Is this guy serious? What are we suppose to tell our kids? Kill yourselves if you’re having problems in life?

The question of the OP is not about just having problems in life, which everyone has. It’s about people who are in real pain, physical and/or psychological pain. I think it’s actually a good question since even according to many religions, there are mitigating circumstances involving suicide if the individual is not mentally or emotionally in control of what they’re doing.

People who commit suicide because of mental illness or emotional pain often don’t know what their doing; they’ve gotten to the point that they’ve lost the ability to reason and think clearly.

Gotta hand it to to some of the posters here who are showing their “love” (Jesus is probably shaking his head right now) for those who are downtrodden and hurting.

Some of the things people have said here have really scared me.

Oh, Puh-LEEZE.

If you have ever been suicidal, you’ll know that you feel there is no hope; not even by divine intervention. And if your faith was that strong that you actually believed “offering it up” was a viable solution you probably wouldn’t be suicidal in the first place.

Pain is not necessarily a sign of seeking a good health.

If pain isn’t the worst thing, then what is the worst thing?
