What a way to make a splash into the forum with my first post
While it may be easy or convenient to blame VII for all the changes we see in our parishes I think many of the posters to this thread have missed the bigger picture.
While I would wholeheartedly agree that the Mass may seem “less sacred” then it once. That was NOT the intention of nor do I think it can be blamed on VII. I think the general malaise we see and many ascribe to VII can be blamed on society asnd the decline in morality in general…
Society is drastically different now than it was in the 60’s the results of those drastic differences are felt everywhere and in all aspects of our lives. In the 60’s it was common practice for folks to leave their doors unlocked, offer assistance to strangers, act with proper reverence in church… Sadly it seems all of things have gone the way of black and white TV.
Does there seem to be less reverence for the Blessed Sacrament than when I was a kid? absolutely… Do I think we need to do a better job cathecitising (sp?) our children? certainly… I could go on and on. Can we blame VII for that? I think the blame falls squarely where it usually does… with you and me and the person sitting on our left and right each sunday morning.
The abuses we hear of and all to often witness in the liturgy and the sacraments do occur, I do not at all dispute that. However to point the finger at VII is to miss the forrest for the trees IMHO. The blame lies in the way WE as lowly human beings have implemented and interpreted the Holy Spirits actions in VII.
When we start to think we know better than the Spirit of Truth who can do no wrong and can not lie, or the Holy See… perhaps we should spend more time practicing the virtue of humility…
