Why was Jesus born a man (i.e. not a woman)?

what is significant about the sex of Jesus Christ, especially in relation to his making visible the invisible God. Sex is arguably accidental (i.e. incidental) to the person (our soul is not sexed I believe) and so why and what is important about Jesus Christ being born “a man”?

Is it about a mutuality between Man/Woman, Mary and Jesus? Is there anything specific and significant that Jesus Christ was born a man? And if so does his “man-ness” reveal to us something important/ significant about God the Father (bearing in mind that “God Almighty” is properly neither male/female…

Thank-you.

**I would say yes it makes a huge difference.

Jesus Christ is the new Adam…Mary the new Eve. If one understands this aspect of Christianity - then Jesus had to be a man.**

Culture of the time.

Back then… a women could not give an accurate account, couldn’t be a teacher or a person in authority.

Secondly, it may better fit the typical cultural role that men held at that time… and to a lesser extent, even today.

That is… of a ‘father figure’ – a leader, a patriarch, a guide and instructor. These roles, particularly then… and even in some respects today… are thought of as a male role.

This COULD have something to do with it.

As with most things theological and concerning God… I always assume that what is done is for OUR benefit, not his.

Do you think people would have tooken him as seriously if he was a woman? I can’t even picture him as a woman, just too weird. :ehh:

God as spirit is not gendered, but human souls are. Each human soul is formed in and for his or her body.

Our mind, which is a power of our soul, is just as gender-affected as our body build, voice, or senses.

As such, the human soul of our LORD is male, as is HIS body.

Would we be asking the same question if Jesus was female?

So I think since we humans come in 2 genders…that we were bound to ask this question either way.

God represented Himself as male, as distinct from the “nature goddess” of that time (or Gaia, or Mother Nature, etc.)

He did not “give birth” to our life in a natural sense; we emerged from His mind.

In that sense, HE is more a father than a “mother”, even though pure spirit has no gender. And therefore HIS human representative had to be male, as well.

I know this is true, but at the same time when you look at Debbora, who was a judge of Israel, she certainly had a voice of authority, right? (I’m ignorant on a lot of things, so I might not know any details.)

As a very small child, I came to that conclusion myself. No one would have listened to a woman claiming to be the daughter of God.

God picked a man to represent Himself because at the time women were second class citizens and didn’t have much of a say in anything. No one would have followed a woman or listened to a woman as their leader.

This is only my opinion but i think the reason Jesus had to be a male is because God made the father the spiritual leader of the house hold (not insulting women. women are awesome :D) so it would be counter intuitive for Jesus to be female because that would have the bride leading the groom. Which is pretty much happens in marrages today but the father is supposed to be the leader in spiritual matters 😛 even though the wife seems to lead in about everything else. That’s why i think Jesus had to be a male.

Exactly. People even now wouldn’t take it as seriously as a man claiming to be the son of God.

From my time involved with feminist theory (I’ve since realized that “true feminism” the way I saw it is found in basic Christian principles, but anyway…) we spoke of “woman as other”, and “man as the norm”. Considering the radical nature of His message, to be taken seriously, He had to have been considered part of “the norm” as a starting point.

Also, would Jesus have spoken of His “kingdom”, and would He have claimed to be a “king”? If He were to be a Queen, what then of His Mother, who was to be crowned Queen Mother of Heaven and Earth?

Good question.👍

Just an opinion, but could it be to show men (males) how to be compassionate?

God was born as a man and not as a woman to undo the sin of Adam who was the first of mankind. A woman could not represent another Adam. And the Blessed Virgin Mary was chosen to be the one to undo the sin of Eve.
