Why was Jesus born a man (i.e. not a woman)?

There is a long list of items on why this is. Some of you have got it right, but that is only part of the truth.

Of course Christ is the new Adam. As Adam introduced sin and death into the world, Christ conquers sin and death.

From a secular view point, it is true that men will be taken more seriously at their time. The teachers, the rabbis, are men. The prophets were men. They will not listen to a woman.

Also from prophecy, what Christ fulfills. He is the High Priest and the King, both male roles. The Messiah is a son of David.

No one.

That’s why his conception was a miracle. A very basic Christian belief, so I’m surprised you didn’t know?
The Holy spirit brought with him an Y chromosome? How did it happen?
Did Jesus have Y chromosome? or not.

what is significant about the sex of Jesus Christ, especially in relation to his making visible the invisible God. Sex is arguably accidental (i.e. incidental) to the person (our soul is not sexed I believe) and so why and what is important about Jesus Christ being born “a man”?

Is it about a mutuality between Man/Woman, Mary and Jesus? Is there anything specific and significant that Jesus Christ was born a man? And if so does his “man-ness” reveal to us something important/ significant about God the Father (bearing in mind that “God Almighty” is properly neither male/female…

Thank-you.
The bolded part is, I think, pretty false. Sex is not something you get in addition to being human; it’s the mode or means of your being human. Sex mediates your participation in the human form.

The correct answer to the main query has already been given. It was symbologically significant for Christ to be the new Adam, for Adam to be the type of Christ. God works symbologically. QED.

Considering Jesus was a man, YES, he definitely had a Y chromosome lol. 🙂

Fifth grade biology. 😉
Speaking of biology, as you are saying Jesus was not an ordinary man, if his birth was a miracle, his body would be as well and he may not have an Y chromosome because his birth was from a virgin with holy spirit, the holy spirit is not a biological person.

Does Jesus have an Y chromosome? If so, how? when the holy spirit is not biological, and from where? if God is able to make everything from dust, Jesus could be born without Y chromosome.

God and science don’t go together. God over rules science, He created the “rules” of the universe, and He can alter them as He pleases. You’re looking too deep into this.

Curiosity is one of the things that keeps my desire for life, just wanted to know if Jesus had an Y chromosome according to Catholicism.

Adam was the first man.

Jesus is the new Adam.

God is showing us that Jesus is related to all of humanity.

Jesus was conceived miraculously.

I see what you’re saying about the Y chromosome thing, but Jesus is still a man in every physiological way possible… even though his conception was miraculous.

As for how, it goes like this:

An angel (messenger from God) appeared before Mary when she was a teenager and asked if she would bear the son of God. She said yes, and in that instant she became pregnant with Jesus.

It was definitely a good question for someone who wants to know more about Christianity.

There is other similar stories talking about deities being born from virgins, I like to think about that issue more. Thank you! :o

Ah, but did those similar stories have a long line of Jewish tradition backing them up? How about prophecies to be fulfilled? And weren’t all of those myths, while Jesus was a true historical person?

I don’t know.🙂

I’ve read that in Elizabethan English law, there were different punishments for men and women because some of the punishments would have been considered immodest for women.

I know it’s a different time and culture, but perhaps if Jesus was a woman, His passion would not have been in its fullness?

Probably an answer in Leviticus, but I’m lazy :o

The Y chromosome question is a fascinating one. For some people, “it’s a miracle” is sufficient, while for others, the quest for knowledge they’re graced with by their Creator is more insatiable than that. I would never poo-poo an honest theological question just because I think the answer is self-evident. I think the details of whether or not Jesus had a Y chromosome, and if so, where did He get it from, and if not, how could He have been a male… these don’t matter much, unless one is trying to disprove His incarnation. If that’s the case, then I propose one theory that would allow into the scope of possibility the existence of an XX male (definition/source below).

“XX male syndrome (also called de la Chapelle syndrome, for a researcher who characterized it in 1972[1]) is a rare sex chromosomal disorder. Usually it is caused by unequal crossing over between X and Y chromosomes during meiosis in the father, which results in the X chromosome containing the normally-male SRY gene. When this X combines with a normal X from the mother during fertilization, the result is an XX male.” en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XX_male_syndrome

Apparently, XX males are physically typical boys and men, though with some feminine characteristics (maybe compassion? patience? understanding? mercy? sound familiar?), and often with low libido (while we don’t typically talk about Jesus in these terms, we can’t deny the fact that He did not marry, which would’ve been the only appropriate outlet for satisfying sexual urges).

I’m not saying that Jesus had what is now called de la Chapelle syndrome, but the fact that it exists in the realm of possibilities only points to the fact that certainly God in His omnipotence could’ve very well utilized two X chromosomes, both from Mary, or split her one X chromosome, or… created a unique Y chromosome from dust (He is the second Adam, is He not?😃 and where did Adam’s chromosomes come from?)
