Why we’re forgetting the Holocaust

We must eventually move beyond the horrors of history.

If we didn’t, we’d have some truly awful holiday to “remember” every single day.

No thanks.
We should always commemorate the memories of tragedies; especially the souls of whom those tragedies took. The greatest “horror of history” is re-presented and commemorated every minute of every day throughout the whole world.

I think that historical knowledge in general is often falling by the wayside. If something happened before 1960, and especially if there are no videos or films, it’s as though it never happened. That’s a shame, because a people without knowledge of history is like a person without a family, with no knowledge of how he got to this place and time.

There’s a tragedy to celebrate every day and many substantially larger than the holocaust in terms of raw body count.

To some degree, you need to let the dead bury the dead.

What age are you talking about ,Grace?

I know our kids had about 3 years running with studies,Literature about the Holocaust ,in Junior High. And at the time they felt like 3 years was too much, because it affected them,
Public school,Texas,just in case.

Well (and I don’t say this to be flip, honestly), a study of the Holocaust should affect us all. And I don’t know how long in those three years your kids studied it (a few weeks, an entire semester, a year, more). At the middle school level, I’d say a semester is too much. But I think a lot of good can come from spending a few weeks on the subject at that age. Of course, it does require trained teachers – and many, sadly, aren’t.

I do not know the time invested. I know that they took it seriously, they told the stories, empatetically, but the third year, they just could not read any more. They knew that it affected them. It wasn t boredom,it was that they have had enough of that dark time. Like when you do not want to open and read a book that will hurt again.
You were talking about genocides and the most recent ones,so my question is at what age do you expect them to have demonstrated interest and awareness.?
Thanks for the previous answer btw.

If that’s the case, why not forget Jesus? He died over 2000 years ago. What difference does his death mean? Or the old testament or religion altogether?

Jesus is a story of hope and redemption.

The Holocaust is a story of suffering and the loss of faith.

I’m surprised you made the comparison.

I don’t think things like slavery or the Holocaust should be forgotten they are important part of each cultures history. We can’t erase the past. I don’t see memorialize the Holocaust or slavery as wrong or futile. I wonder why other people do

We just can’t learn from it.

When a nation becomes desperate again for a charismatic leader to show them the way and make them feel powerful again, they’ll follow him.

I wouldn’t consider it wrong or futile. It’s just another stain on the history of humanity. It shows us what animals we are capable of being.

I don’t think we need reminders.

What the heck is that? Idk about usa but in Spain we have class history and we study history period. What the heck is Holocaust education? Surprised bro

We don’t have specific courses dedicated to the Holocaust on the primary and secondary level. Some states just mandate that it has to be covered in some capacity. In my case, we covered it in history and English classes.

Awesome. CAF now has Holocaust deniers.

Get out your rosaries, fellow Catholics, because logic will be useless here from this point forward.

Ty for anwering me is interesting. Think there is plenty of more important things in the history of the west than the holocaust. It has to he an agenda behind it bro. A lot of worse things happened in the past and in the 20th century as well. A lot of jews died but to me as long as i read 6 millions jews is to big number and btww…

Did they told you natzis killed thousands of gypsies according to some sources, which i dont trust, near to 1 million gypsies?

Im not denying the holocaust, im saying the numbers are exageratted and for your information members of my family were victims of the natzis. Im Gipsy

And read a little bit for yourself doesn’t take a genious to see numbers exageratted

  1. Making the claim that the number of victims is exaggerated is Holocaust denial. Perhaps you’re the one who needs to read.
  2. I’m a Holocaust scholar. The claims you’re making are idiotic and baseless, not “genius.”

So i cant disagree on the numbers, if I do i commited a crime. Bravo my catholic sister bravo. Keep it going.

I disagree on the numbers and I am an historian. And maybe you are jewish specialist or second world war. But to tell your a Holocaust scholar is amazing to me.

God bless you
