These pieces of cloth were brought in with high ceremony and placed in front of the church for the veneration of the faithful.

These pieces of cloth were worshipped with GREAT solemnity, with ritual gestures executed in unison on the command of the leader: “Attention! Salute! Pledge!”

What’s strange is that both prayers began with the same words: “I pledge allegiance…”

If Catholics worship statutes, then Baptists say prayers to pieces of cloth. You can’t condemn one and approve the other.**

amazing what the bible tells us huh??
IT IS!

First Epistle Of Saint Paul To Timothy 3:14-15
These things I write to thee, hoping that I shall come to thee shortly. But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.

Footnote from the Douay-Rheims: “The pillar and ground of the truth”… Therefore the church of the living God **can never uphold error, nor **bring in corruptions, superstition, or idolatry.

😛 😉 Would you want to tell the Russians to stop doing something? 😉 😛

And personally, I am not Orthodox, but I still kiss my icons (esp. my Sacred Heart of Jesus). But I also kiss the picture of my husband every morning since he and I are not together right now. Just call me crazy 🤷
Sorry if I confused you, P&L, I was actually responding to the OP in my comment about icons. 🙂

You didn’t confuse me. I was commenting back at a comment that wasn’t made to me. If that makes sense…

D’oh, ya got me!

Good question! That would truly be awful! Why would anyone worship statues???

I’m Catholic, and I agree with the church, that worshipping statues would be idolatry. 🙂

Egg-zackly ! THe people to ask, are those who do so 😃 🙂

no im simply “gently correcting” my fellow brothers whom are very lost

TY v. much for:

  • the intention
  • the gentleness
  • the correction
However, use of holy images is not in itself idolatry.
Holy cards of the Saints represent them too 😃 - they have, if God so will, great power to excite love & veneration of the Saint depicted: I know this by experience, and I certainly won’t be alone 🙂 Love of the Saints is of itself nothing else than an attraction to the Infinitely Adorable Christ, Who draws us to Himself with cords of love through those in Whom His Life is fully realised. No wonder that their representations - in our minds, in statues & icons, in photographs & paintings - have such power for good.

Is there anything gracious that cannot be perverted ? Not on earth among us sinners.

FollowTheWay:
Does Exodus 20 not say not to make an image of anything in Heaven above?

Of course - but God has Himself shown us an Image to adore: His Son:

  • Hbr 1:1 In many and various ways God spoke of old to our fathers by the prophets;
  • Hebrews 1:2 but in these last days he has spoken to us by a Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world.
  • Hebr 1:3 He reflects the glory of God and bears the very stamp of his nature, upholding the universe by his word of power. When he had made purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,
  • Hbr 1:4 having become as much superior to angels as the name he has obtained is more excellent than theirs.

Correct me if I am wrong, but if we follow Follow The Way views on statues and icons, God also said to make “No likeness of anything on earth or under the sea”. That would include all paintings of any thing, plants, animals or humans. I also believe that the Orthodox Jews would not allow pictures taken of them at one time.

Since Catholics don’t worship the above there should be no problems with having them in church or home. If there is a problem then Follow The Way should have no pictures or liknesses anywhere.

I wonder if he/she salutes the flag or visits memorials of Lincoln etc. All likenesses anywhere should be destroyed by his/her belief.

Yours in the Hearts of Jesus and Mary

You do realize that Catholic doctrine is riddled with this stuff, for instance that a priest cannot marry:
Paul did not marry. Jesus did not marry. 1 Tim 3 does not put a restriction on the celibate life. It is a call to a life of chastity and virtue. It is not a mandate that all bishops must be married.
FTW:
Purgatory is well addressed throughout this forum: There is scriptural support for it. And it does not call into question the sufficiency of Christ’s sacrifice. Take a look before raising the same worn out arguments again.
FTW:
That somehow the Catholic building is the house of the Lord
???
FTW:
Ive come here to tell you these things in order to be like Jeremiah, to warn you.
It’s always nice to know there are people out there that care for my salvation. I will assume you are acting in good faith. Please assume the same from me when I tell you that your understanding of the Catholic Church is profoundly incorrect.
FTW:
as for age, Paul told Timothy do not let anyone look down on you because of your age. and now I am done because:
Titus 3:9-11
You have to assume that your words will be read by more than just the poster you are responding to. By quoting the above, are you suggesting that all of us at this site who are Catholic fall into this category:
[9] But avoid stupid controversies, genealogies, dissensions, and quarrels over the law, for they are unprofitable and futile.
[10] As for a man who is factious, after admonishing him once or twice, have nothing more to do with him,
[11] knowing that such a person is perverted and sinful; he is self-condemned. (Titus 3:9-11)
If you are so quick to condemn those who do not agree with you, then perhaps you should not come to forums such as these; or perhaps you need to shore up your own position, rather than concluding that the person who confronts you is perverted, sinful and condemned.

Peace,
-Robert

Not surprisingly, when FTW’s remarks are soundly refuted by both Scripture and common sense, the OP falls strikingly silent…

Like in his other threads?
I do dislike hit-and-run posters.

I was Catholic, there are statues of Mary and saints and Jesus.
What do you think praying the rosa
ry is, what do you think lighting candles at the feet of these statues are, or what about the many other practices like parading with Mary statues.

Did the Lord not get mad when we made a golden calf out of him?

Did he not tell us that he showed up on mount Horeb as a flame so that we would not make an image out of him?

Does Exodus 20 not say not to make an image of anything in Heaven above?

What about Acts 17:29-30

Therefore since we are God’s offspring, we should not think that the divine being is like gold or silver or stone—an image made by man’s design and skill. In the past God overlooked such ignorance, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent.

amazing what the bible tells us huh??
I have images of my Mother and Grand parents who have passed away. The images are pictures. i don’t worship the pictures any more than I worship statues of Saints, Mary or Jesus. The pictures remind me of my loved ones just as statues remind me of Jesus, Mary and the Saints. No one is worshiping the statues.
The Rosary is a meditation on the life of Christ and in the process asking his Mother to pray for us. Have you ever asked anyone to pray for you? I can’t think of a better person to ask to pray for me than the mother of Jesus. Is she dead or alive with Christ? tell me one thing that is wrong or sinful about the above.

I was Catholic, there are statues of Mary and saints and Jesus.
You may have been baptized Catholic, but clearly you do not understand Catholic Teaching. What do the existence of statues of Mary, Jesus, and the saints have to do with worshipping statues?

That is like saying “I was Catholic. My parents had pictures of their parents and grandparents”.

You are implying that a representation of a loved one is equal to “worship”. Such a statement indicates that a person does not understand what worship is. 🤷
What do you think praying the rosary is,
I think it is a private and pious devotion designed to explore meditation upon the scriptures from the point of view of Jesus’ mother.
what do you think lighting candles at the feet of these statues are,
I can speak for myself, when I say that Jesus is the light of the world. Jesus has been the light for many who have gone before me in the faith, and it is in my best interest to imitate them.
or what about the many other practices like parading with Mary statues.
Do you know how the Israelites were healed from deadly snakebites?
Did the Lord not get mad when we made a golden calf out of him?
No one can “make” anything out of God.

Yes, God (and Moses) were very angry at the idolatry of the Israelites.
Did he not tell us that he showed up on mount Horeb as a flame so that we would not make an image out of him?
Not that I recall. However, God is not opposed to images. God is opposed to worshipping images.
Does Exodus 20 not say not to make an image of anything in Heaven above?
for the purpose of worship, yes.
What about Acts 17:29-30

Therefore since we are God’s offspring, we should not think that the divine being is like gold or silver or stone—an image made by man’s design and skill. In the past God overlooked such ignorance, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent.
You appear to be suffering under some misconception that Catholics worship images.
amazing what the bible tells us huh??
no im simply “gently correcting” my fellow brothers whom are very lost
There are a lot of problems with this. One is that CAF is not provided as a venue for you to judge Catholics. Second we are not here so that you can ‘correct’ us. If you wish to “correct brothers whom are very lost” then perhaps you should open your own website?

It is amazing that the bible you are using to thump us on the head says that it is wrong for you to judge others as “lost”. That book says that you should let the wheat and the tares grow together until the harvest. 😉

Amen! 👍

OFF Topic:
You do realize that in leaving the Church, you are walking disorderdly?
How ??

BACK Topic:
So, do you not have any pictures of loved ones? When you look at a picture of your loved one, do you love the Kodak print or the person you love.
We do not worship statues, we are reminded of … very beautiful images of them.
I have images of my Mother and Grand parents who have passed away. The images are pictures. i don’t worship the pictures any more than I worship statues of

The pictures remind me of my loved ones
True !! Me too , but not my whole place !!

I have reading yesterday , 4:35 pm #31 !!

But why do have some households so many
crosses , statues , bibles at home ??
At some , in every room they have a cross
or whatever , isn’t this (a) exaggeration ??

Just wild sniffing around:

How much it all may cost ??
davidmacd.com/catholic/statues_in_church.htm

It looks like ham2ham is pretty quiet when confronted with God commanding the ark of the covenant to be built.

Actually, I prefer to offer incense up to the idols after sprinkling holy water on them before wurship’n em. A human sacrifice is always in order…any volunteers? That book you call the bible…well it helps make the fires really big and hot. Candles are also important since we may decide to wurship em too.

I was a Catholic up until the age of 20, whats amazing is that it all happened because I read 'The Bible" it was the douay reihms version.
What “it” happened?

Glad you are reading the Catholic Bible, given to you by the Catholic Church. Ignorance of Scripture is ignorance of Christ.
Yes the Lord did have a staff which to look upon and yes there were cherubim on top of the arc of the covenant.
Ok. So we are in agreement that God commissioned the creation of graven images.
But what happens when people put importance on those objects?
Those that looked upon the staff were healed.

Those that revered the Ark found Life. Those that disregarded it found death.
, where is the arc now?
In heaven. Have you read the book of Revelation?
Did they light candles or incents to these objects. Did they say prayers to these objects?
No, the candelabra was lit perpetually because it represented the Light of God in the midst of the People. All of God’s people have only worshipped HIm, never objects, which results in death.
Code:
What happened to the temple?
It was transferred to the Body of Jesus.
Jesus destroyed the temple and rose up a new church which is you and I.
You have a deficient view of the church.

If you believe that Catholics worship objects, then we are not members of the same Body of Christ.
Why would we give statues and prayers for Mary whom is only human,
This is a strange question.
The ascension is only doctrine it is not in the bible.
“only a doctrine”?

Do you know where your Bible came from?
Code:
Also those apocryphal books were added much later, and were to only be used as inspirational and historical, because they could not find them divine.
I believe that you are involved in an anti-Catholic community that is teaching you errors.
By the way I do not belong to a denomination im a follower of the way (read Acts) I dont care for religion only relationship
This is a good thing. Did you know that there is no separation between Jesus and His Church?
and now I am 22
Seems like you are still able to be reached…
You do realize that Catholic doctrine is riddled with this stuff,
 What “stuff” is that?
for instance that a priest cannot marry:
Really? What makes you think that? Don’t you think Jesus was married? Have you not seen the Da Vinci code? Don’t you think Paul was married? where are you getting this “stuff”?
Purgatory
What is that?
That somehow the Catholic building is the house of the Lord
Did you not read this in the Bible?
Ive come here to tell you these things in order to be like Jeremiah,
to warn you.
Thanks, Follow. You will forgive us if we believe otherwise?
as for age, Paul told Timothy do not let anyone look down on you because of your age.
and now I am done because:

Titus 3:9-11

“But avoid foolish controversies and genealogies and arguments and quarrels about the law, because these are unprofitable and useless. Warn a divisive person once, and then warn him a second time. After that, have nothing to do with him. You may be sure that such a man is warped and sinful; he is self-condemned.”
I don’t believe you have brought any “law” or “genealogies”. I think, therefore, you have taken this passage out of context. Anyway, this passage was written by a Catholic to a Catholic bishop, and does not apply to anything you have to say.
Apparently, Catholics do.
No, I think Follow is talking about herself. She must have been poorly catechized, and was worshipping statues, because she did not recognize our Lord. 🤷

But why do have some households so many
crosses , statues , bibles at home ??
At some , in every room they have a cross
or whatever , isn’t this (a) exaggeration ??
No, I think it’s more a matter of custom and taste. Though there is this:

One of my grandmas had multiple pictures of her kids and grandkids all over her house, along with everything every one of them ever made and/or gave her - to the point that you actually couldn’t see the wallpaper in some places!

My other grandma had a few nice photos, but they were all in one area - the house was kept immaculate; very tasteful and nothing allowed that didn’t clash with the decor.

Now I’m sure both of them loved us equally - but can you guess which house we kids enjoyed visiting more? 😉
