I am an old school Catholic. Knew the mass in Latin, etc. Catholic school, the whole deal.

I questioned the Church after Vat II. Does anyone remember chapel veils, altar rails, etc.

I fell away after the changes. After all, I was taught the Church was one way and then it changed. I was confused.

So now, after much soul-searching, I am hoping to return the Church; however, I am married to a man who now requires an annulment for me to rejoin my faith and the Sacraments. He is non-Catholic, non-baptized in any faith and was married the first time at the age of 18. My question, I thought I was married to a non-Catholic and the marriage was not valid in the Catholic Church: when did his staus matter to mine as a Catholic?

So at my advanced age, I have to wait for an annulment on my non-Catholic, non-baptized
husband’s former marriage. Give me Faith and your prayers. Help me to understand.
Thank-you. If this is the wrong forum, please advise.

Non-Christians are not bound to the laws of the Church regarding marriage, it is true, but marriage is a matter of God’s law, and even natural law, as well as Church law. Adam and Eve, for example, certainly had a valid and sacramental marriage, being joined to each other by God, even though there was no priest there to witness it!

This being the case, the Church does and always has, in some situations, recognised marriages contracted outside the Church, and even marriages contracted by non-Catholics and non-Christians. In much the same manner as it recognises baptisms performed by non-Catholics, even by atheists, as long as they are in the Trinitarian formula.

For these reasons, the marital status even of non-Catholics who are married to Catholics is indeed important.

Dear Reynard,
It’s wonderful to welcome you back. Yes I remember all those things. I still have a Latin/English missal from those times.

I hope and pray you and your husband will get over this hurdle.
I’ll remember you both in my prayers.

Warm regards, Trishie

Dear Trishie,

Thank you for your support and prayers… I am sending those prayers right back to you.

Thanks for understanding. Reynard

Dear Reynard,

I also am praying for you’re situation. Remember God is near to us always and although his ways are not ours, he is always close and knows us and our situations, and he has been working on yours long before it began! God Bless

With Love and Warm Regards,

Dear RitaZita,

Tears are dripping off my face. Thank you for your prayers.

God bless you always and forever,

Reynard

God knows the situation you are in, Reynard.Trust in the inclusionary spirit of the Catholic church. Marriage preperation classes and baptisms into the Catholic faith are possible before you marry also. Try to get your husband to be baptized and confirmed before your marriage, so that he understands the faith fully.
My prayers are with you
Best of luck. Mary1173:)

Hi Reynard, I grew up “old school” also. I have been our parishes RCIA Director for over 25 years and I can’t even remember how many problem marriages we have run across. I just would encourage you to hang in there and let everything work itself out. And Welcome Home, my prayers are with you.

Dear Reynard - I remember the "old school: ways. I am praying for you. Welcome home.

Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the Living God, quicken for Reynard your order in her life, bring her boldly into your Sacramental life, rejoicing for the gift God has given her of reconciliation with your body, and restoring unto her the years that the locust have eaten. For you Lord Jesus are a God of order and I thank you for bringing that order into all of our lives, for in your order Jesus is peace and love. Thank you Jesus. Amen.

Thank you everyone for all the prayers. We are beginning the annulment process for my husband’s previous marriage beginning with all the paperwork and supporting documentation.

We are so happy to finally have the hope of someday having our marriage blessed in the
Church.

Many blessings to all of my prayer warriors!

Reynard
