I think it is a touch beyond comfort to generalize.I haven’t as yet, come across any slander or bigotry nor back-biting in regards to protestants?I have seen Catholics learn, instruct, advise and defend their faith.
But there are bad apples. But still, that doesn’t permit this approach.

I suppose it becauses a lot of Catholics feel strongly about the message of Jesus Christ- and so are upset when Protestants get it so very wrong.

The Catholic tradition is very rich and complex- we do not reduce things to simple formulae for salvation, etc., and fully embrace paradox, mystery, and philosophy. In this regard, the comparison of Protestantism to Catholicism is like comparing pre-school to post-grad.

Another reason would be that Catholics seem to find their faith under attack from Protestants (to the point of being put on the spot by unfair or slanderous comments) far more often than Protestants do from Catholics. That kind of nonsense is bound to engender defensiveness, even hostility.

Why do Catholics on here spend their time, wasting their time putting protestants down?

It really doesn’t give a good impression about how Catholics behave to people of other denominations and makes you who do so and these boards in bad light for wanting to have a go at protestants. Also makes you guys look bit like idiots when you are getting basic facts so very wrong too 😃

I wonder if we can survive one whole week without protestants being put down or a false fact being written on here? It would improve the quality of the boards no end if anything that was up was actually right for once :o

After all Protestants are fully fledged Christians and believe in God so why spend time being judgemental?

I hope you can rise to the challenge 😃 😃
Why do they do that?
a) It makes them feel better about themselves.
b) They don’t know very much about protestants and it’s always easy to diss something you don’t understand.
c) Catholics have been told forever that protestants are their enemies and they believe it.

I’ve been both protestant and catholic in my lifetime. There is actually more mean-mouthing that goes on on the Catholic side than on the Protestant side. True.

Who says they’re not Christians? Just because they dance with snakes and bite the heads off chickens, they’re still OK in my book. 😛 :rotfl:
🍿:bounce::rotfl: Do the snakes dance with humans? :slapfight::bigyikes:👋

Well if what you want is to be accepting of a protestants religion than that is a no can do. All religious discussions with people of other religions should be revolved around getting them converted. If this isn’t the ultimate goal then what is the point in even having a dialogue? I understand all religions, I understand that they are all wrong bar the church of Jesus Christ, God, the One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church.

I think there would be a whole lot less protestants if they studied the history of the Church prior to the “reformation”.

No, they don’t, except for a very few splinter groups way back in the hills. Most protestants do no such things. Catholics have some very peculiar ideas about Protestants.

If I understand you correctly, you’re saying that Catholics who discuss faith with Protestants for the first time are, in your experience, more wont to toss out unwarranted allegations against their interlocutor’s beliefs than vice-versa? What kind of things were said?

I think you’d better start with the Catholics inside the Church who don’t even know their own religion. They’re the biggest pagans around.

What do you mean?..that statement seems wide out…
It’s wide out because the behavior I’ve seen is “wide out.” Catholics who don’t know their faith not only don’t behave in a Catholic sense, they don’t behave in a Christian sense. I’ve seen Catholics do things that even unchurched ex-Protestants would never consider. And they’ve not be isolated instances, either.

They don’t know their faith because they never learned it and that’s one thing. But they were insulated by the people around them from learning general moral behavior such as a little ex-protestant kid might learn from grandparents and so on. The results aren’t pretty. I’ve been catholic more than 25 years now, taught in a catholic school and so on, and I’ve seen some stupendously crazy stuff.

Can you give us some examples to illustrate what you’re saying? 🙂

And yet…

here you are putting Catholics down.

I lived in Roanoke, Virginia a few years back, and there was a Christian TV channel that showed televangelist programs twenty-four hours a day. There were all there, Jimmy Swaggart, Oral Roberts, Jerry Falwell, Jim and Tammy Bakker and their extravagant Heritage USA waterpark supported by Ponzi scheme financing, and a lot of lesser personalities.

There was constant attack on Catholics. Catholics weren’t Christian, Catholics weren’t born again, Catholics were going to hell, when he wasn’t visiting the whorehouses Jimmy Swaggart said the Inquisition killed 95,000,000 people which exceeded the population of Europe until two centuries ago, the Catholic Church was the Whore of Babylon, the Pope was the Antichrist, Hitler was a Catholic etc etc etc.

It was disgusting.

Don’t tell me Catholics dump on Protestants here. I’ve watched EWTN. Protestants are rarely mentioned.

Jimmy Swaggart said the Inquisition killed 95,000,000 which exceeded the population of Europe until two centuries ago,
LOL! That’s funny!

I saw something similar in which an advertisement proclaimed “It is estimated that close to 9 million women died during the Inquisition.” Ree-DAHNK-u-lous!

Do you have a reference for Jimmy Swaggart saying this? Just curious.

Good old Mr. crocodile tears himself, Jimmy swine-heart… what a crock of horse feathers ! How anyone could take him seriously is amazing. I feel sorry for the folks who have been duped by folks like him, and other send me the money tele-evangelists.

At least a few like Rev Farewell limited themselves to a more reasonable salary/stipend (55K a few years back back -maybe much more by now)… The ones that put themselves up in fancy cars and plush houses, turn my stomach.

We don’t need to scandalize them here, they scandalize themselves with their lavish life styles.

Were those blanket statements about all protestants or were them statements about some protestants. It seems to me that protestants are so diverse that you could make almost any statement you could think of and it wouldn’t be true about all protestants and it would be true about some protestants.
Indeed, just like I can think of quite a few people that identify as Catholics that are okay with gay marriage and birth control. However, knowing of those Catholics isn’t sufficient for saying that this view is characteristic of Catholics. I could be wrong, but I think what was being communicated is that there have been some attributes that have been in some sense unfairly presented as characteristic of protestants.

I heard and saw him say it on his television program before a large audience many years ago, his “service” I guess he’d call it. No sign of the Eucharist at this “service” or anything else like that. I don’t think Jesus played the piano like Jimmy did then.

*95,000,000 hunh, Jimmy? Not likely I’d ever forget that nonsense. *

During his “sevices”, he would sometimes say, “I am not a theologian” as if being a theologcian was something bad. He was pandering to his ignorant audience.
