Paganism is a massive term that’s not useful because most people reinvent it for themselves. It could mean anything from someone who likes nature to someone who (with little success) attempts to reconstruct ancient religions.

The Book of the Law is, frankly, writing which Crowley claims to have channeled. From a Catholic perspective, it’s highly likely it’s demonically inspired.

Crowley was a lot of things, but he probably really did have access to preternatural phenomenon that your average Pagan doesn’t even believe exists.

As I say, you have reason for concern. I would absolutely go to a trusted priest.
I want to go to a priest, but I’m not sure what to say. An earlier poster said that my only complaint is that I don’t like his religion, and I’m not sure what anyone would be able to do about his marriage to my mother. I don’t want to be a bigot but I also feel like I am in a spiritually unsafe place and I worry about the spiritual health of my whole family.

I’m afraid of making things worse. If I talk to a priest about it and he talks to my mom, what if they just creates an even bigger wedge? I just feel really lost and confused.

I understand. You are not in control of your mother’s faith and as long as you remain close to your brother that is all you can do for his faith. Pray, lead by example, and trust that God has this all figured out. You are way too young to take sick a heavy load upon yourself. And by doing so you are not trusting Jesus like we Catholics are supposed to do. Let it go and let God handle their souls. You are not and never will be the gatekeeper. It will only cause yourself harm emotionally and spiritually to try to act as their spiritual protector. You CAN control you, you will NEVER control them. If you make too big of a fuss you may actually drive a deep wedge in between yourself and them, and also between them and the Church. Hold tight to your faith and see if you can get someone to be sure you are at Mass each week. Invite your family all to come with you, and offer the Mass up for them and for family togetherness. Each night, say prayers of thanksgiving for all the lovely things in your life. Many people have things much worse than you. And also say prayers for your family. I recommend the St. Michael prayer
Thank you for this post. I agree with it, but it is hard to let go of the notion that I would somehow be responsible if my brother and mother fell away from the faith. I feel like I should be protecting them but I don’t know how. I’ll try to have more trust in God.

I think you should go to a priest just for personal support. The way that you turned to us here.

Frankly, the poster was wrong when they picked on you for not liking this man’s religion. That probably had more to do with the fact that they were personally offended that you somehow reject their own views of things.

But you have to stand by your faith, and by what the Church teaches.

If someone doesn’t like that, then the only complaint they have is that they don’t like YOUR religion.

To pick on you for the same thing could be hypocritical. We should be respectful of people’s views, but that doesn’t imply we should water down our own, or permit folks to try to undermine our positions.

Maybe I’m paranoid but I have a lingering fear that his occult practices will somehow draw evil into the house. I don’t know if that is rational or not. Maybe I’ve seen too many scary movies or something, but I can’t ever shake the ‘wrong’ feeling. I don’t even know if it’s real or if I’ve just worked myself up into a frenzy about it.

I’m trying really hard to get along with him. and I mean he really is a nice person, despite my reservations, but I can’t bond with him. I have honestly tried and I can’t. My brother can but I can’t.

I will try to talk to my priest about it and see if he has any suggestions, but it might be hard for me to get to church. When my mom doesn’t go I have no ride and we live way out in the country so I can’t walk. I’ll try and see if someone would be willing to give me a ride though.

Well, it is a danger. The Church teaches us to stay away from those things for a reason. Opening up your life and your heart and your mind to evil spirits is not a good thing. Yes, our culture thinks that’s medieval, but our culture is wrong.

But you know what I think? This is just my speculation.

I think people who are in the occult are largely affected in other ways besides completely preternatural experiences.

I think it affects their morality, their views of God, their views of religion, and even how they reason.

Now, a lot of that is just personal projection. I was involved in the occult for some time, at least to a certain extent. I never experienced anything “weird,” but I was also morally and psychologically a wretch. I think that that sort of damage is sufficient without evil spirits bringing crazy manifestations into the mix.

But really, I wish I had advice on how to live in this sort of situation. It’s very complicated, but I wouldn’t be too stressed out about evil influences in obviously scary ways. But don’t stop praying, and my wife and I will pray for you, too.

Thank you. There have been a few ‘weird’ things, but nothing that would send me screaming for the hills. For the most part I think it is just the sense of vague uneasiness that really wears me down.

I will do what I can to stay strong and thank you for your time and advice, it is truly appreciated.

The absolute best way to protect them and yourself is the St. Michael prayer, going to Mass, and saying the Rosary. Actually, that’s the only way you really can. And do not fear talking to trusted adults in real life about your troubles. We all have them. It is hard to grow up even in the best of circumstances. Your life has taken a huge shift and that is tough even for adults. It is normal what you are feeling and it is good you are asking for help. It takes time and patience to place things into God’s hands, but prayers of Thanksgiving have always helped me to realize that God is good and takes care of my family in ways unseen even when we don’t deserve it. You seem like such an amazing kid. Your mom is a blessed woman to have you in her life. She’s done a great job of raising you. Remember that God took care of her during that time so He most certainly will continue doing so now.

You have been given very good advice. You have every reason to feel uncomfortable. These occult practices are against the First Commandment, sins against religion. " I am the Lord thy God, thou shalt not have any false gods before Me" The devil is there. As a Christian you have power too, in your belief, in Jesus Christ. Always invoke His Name in prayer, and ask Our Lady to help you, God loves all of you, and the devil deceives, and hates. If you can get your hands on Holy Water, use it around the house, no one has to know. Command the evil influence to leave in the Name of Jesus. Keep loving your family, even your step-dad. The devil can’t stand love, and he is extremely fearful of Jesus who crushed him by His death on a Cross. Place pictures of Christ around if you are able. Use what ever Christian means are available to you, you don’t have to make a grand show of it. Even a Bible is a powerful force. Your mother shouldn’t object to having it around. And keep praying and praising God as you can, praise can do wonders. You are not helpless, St. Paul tells us faith is a shield against the firery darts of Satan. You can counter whatever effect your step-dad has on your family by the practice of your Faith, and Trust. I am sure that he doesn’t realize the reality of what he is doing. Speak to a priest, and be frank, and tell him that you don’t want to cause any trouble in your family, he will understand. It’s a great thing to witness your concern for your families spiritual well-being, stay that way, and God is with you and them. Will be praying for you, God bless you!

This is a tough situation but I want to praise your maturity and faith. And offer a different perspective- I used to be involved with occult practices and I know two things for sure: 1. People who do these things usually have benign intentions and 2. The forces behind these practices are not benign. Please pray for your stepfather and mom.

Ah, no. I don’t really care that the OP doesn’t care for my religion. I don’t know her, and she doesn’t know me, so it doesn’t affect either of us.

I find it amusing that you’re projecting that I was ‘picking on her’, when all I was pointing out was a simple truth…if she’s trying to call for an intervention of her mother’s marriage, saying, “I don’t like his faith” isn’t really grounds for having others talk to her mother (a grown woman) about her marriage (which is already a done deal). Especially when by the OP’s admittance, her stepfather has been nothing but loving and kind to her and her family. The OP isn’t obliged to start practicing her stepfather’s religion, and I don’t get the impression he’s making her. Nor does it sound like he’s trying to stop her from practicing hers.

As another poster asked the OP, if she’s going to get others involved, then what does she hope to accomplish out of it? And that was the point I was backing up.

Pray the Rosary every day for your family.

Years ago I was involved in the New Age field. I came across pretty much every type of practice and belief that field was involved in. Wiccans, those who believe themselves to be shamans, people who read tarots, played with angel cards, believed in numerology, used ruin stones, crystals, all sorts of ‘‘therapies’’ such as reiki, some people once danced around me ringing bells to clear bad energy at a mind body and soul festival. I had an old school friend who practiced psychic readings and believed in past lives and believed she could tell a person’s past life. I’ve had much to do with persons who believe they can communicate with spirits and see spirits. I’ve met people who claim to be white witches.

People such as your step dad are generally from my experience lovely people. They’ve just been seduced by a world that is very seductive. And it is a world that people can see and experience things. People can see spirits, they can talk to the dead, you can feel energy, the psychic readings might come true in part, and you might believe a particular spell worked. But it isn’t of God. The devil is capable of tricks and illusions. Goodness we have people who make a living out of being an illusionist. This is what the New Age field is. It is a big illusion and unfortunately some people get sucked into it.

Your mum is not the first Catholic woman that has re married outside of the Faith and then slowly move away. It does happen. My former atheist husband was slowly able to pull me away from the Church. But even nice people can be seductive, and influential, especially if you are in love with them. Whether they are deliberately trying to do so or not.

You just stand firm in your faith. You don’t have to defend your faith to your step father. You don’t have to get into conversations about Wicca. You don’t have to learn about Wicca nor do you have to ever feel that you are obliged in any way to listen, look, watch or participate. There is such a thing as feeling obligated. Just because your step father is a nice man who treats everyone well, doesn’t mean that you need to feel that you have to participate in any of his practices. Just stand firm. If your step dad does anymore ‘’return to me lost cat’’ spells pray the Rosary at the same time. I know you feel for your mum and your brother, but all is not lost. You have your faith. You can pray for yourself and them. You can ask others to pray for your family, such as your church prayer group. As other have said you can speak to your priest. He might know this man but your priest might not be aware your step dad is into Wicca.

Ps. There is no such thing as a White Witch or a good spell. Witch craft is witchcraft.

I understood your post to meant exactly what you describe above re: using religion as an excuse to intervene in her mothers marriage. I’m not sure though that that is what the OP is asking.

I interpreted her post to mean she is** ‘scared and uncomfortable about his occult activities’ **and wants to discuss it with her mum and a Priest. Probably a good idea for the stepfather to also be present so he can understand the Catholic teaching on the occult.

I agree the stepfather has been loving and kind to her. What probably needs to be discussed is that the spells, spirit boards etc make her uncomfortable. The reason they make her uncomfortable is because the Church deems this behaviour to be unacceptable for Catholics to participate in or observe. They can be an avenue to unleash evil spirits into the world.

Catholics vehemently opposing this in their posts are concerned not only for her spiritual welfare but also the whole family including the stepfather.

OK–I definitely see what you’re saying there.

You are right to be concerned. Witchcraft is demonic in origin and directly opposed to Catholicism.

How old are you and your brother? Are you both relatively close to university age? The time to your independence, and that of your brother, would colour my recommendations.

At a minimum, I would ensure I had these things in order:
  1. You negotiate a guarantee from your mum that you will have transportation to and from Sunday Mass.
  2. You pray the rosary daily for your family’s protection, and that you all do God’s will.
  3. You strive as much as possible to lead a good Catholic life as an example to your family.

I am very sorry to hear you’re facing this difficult situation. You have done an excellent job of trying to keep your description of the issue even handed. Your fears are real. I would be very uncomfortable in your situation and I’m 66 years old. I think you should have an honest conversation with your Mom.

Tell her the good things you’ve noticed (She’s happier, step-dad is kind and considerate, etc.)

Tell her the problems you’re having (I miss our family attendance at Mass, I really hate it when I can’t attend Mass, I need to talk to a priest about my fears. Be kind in your discussion)

Stay close to your faith and talk to God about your feelings. Ask Him what he wants you to do. Trust Him.

Saying a prayer for you and your whole family.

God Bless you.

You know, I tried to come up with a good response, but I can’t. The best that I can figure is that a “true” Wiccan is trying to follow a spiritual path, not a religion. That said, keep up your faith and live it well. Perhaps your mother and brother will come around-I pray so. And keep a happy:)face.

Please see a priest and discuss all this with him. Your stepfather is involved with the occult. He is deceived and is now being used to deceive others. It doesn’t matter how nice and calm he seems, he may just not know how harmful his practices are.

Please see your priest and discuss all this in detail with him, as you did here in the forum.

May our Lord Jesus Christ and His Blessed Mother be with you!
Yes. This is well said and good advice. Definitely speak with a priest.
Mary.

I think the best way to protect your family is to pray the rosary every day. You can definitely protect them this way. I know you are young, so it’s hard to find the patience (and maybe even the time). If you can’t make it through a whole rosary daily, maybe just try a decade each day. Just be consistent, and ask Mary to protect your family every day, including your step father, especially him even. Also, please, ask her to help you to resist temptation to involve yourself anymore with the rituals he performs. I would also feel like you and not want to bring friends home. It all sounds very concerning to me, and yes, even frightening. But also try and relax a little, try and enjoy the aspects of your new life that you can, because it also sounds like a lovely new beginning for your mother, even though there is a dark side to it. So much is beyond your control. The best you can do is pray.

How is it possible he was able to bring the cat back home…and after several weeks?

I know some will say coincidence, but pretty incredible when the very morning after the ‘ritual’ is done, the cat shows up at the front porch, Im not so sure prayer could have done that?
