I’ve got a step-mother who is just not quite right. There’s no better way to put it as I’m not aware of a clinical term that describes her precisely. (I’ve heard a lot of less clinical terms used however.) Most people would just call her “weird”.

She has no concept of social boundaries. For example, she seems to think that every stranger she encounters needs to know that my sister had a pap smear today or the whole epic tale of when my brother passed a kidney stone. She memorizes the minute details of the everyday lives of every one she encounters, even when she’ll never see the person again. Even so, it never seems like she’s listening to you when you talk to her because she’s always talking about something else.

Anyway, one of her more irritating quirks is that she’s a compulsive copycat and this has manifested itself recently into every gift-giving occasion. For example, my mother made my niece an Easter dress a few years back, So, despite the fact that Easter was only being celebrated once that particular year, she decided to buy a second Easter dress for my niece.

When my daughter was born, someone gave us a huge play piano. During Christmas, my stepmother started telling us how much our girl loved music and needed a play piano. We both quickly told her that we already had one and we hated it because it was too noisy, too bulky, and we didn’t have space to keep it. Sure enough, Christmas day found a play piano under the tree. We pointed out again that we already had one and she smiled and said, “Well this one was on sale at Costco so now she can have two!” 🤷 (For when other infants come over and want to play duets?) We discretely asked my dad for the receipt and returned it.

Over the summer, my daughter was spending a lot more time outdoors and getting a lot more physical and so I sought out the perfect ride-on toy. I posted a photo on facebook of my girl, proudly riding her new toy, which my step-mother “liked”. She liked it so much that two months later, she arrived with a new ride-on toy for my daughter’s birthday. I reminder her that I had just bought her one and she smiled and said, “Well, now she can have two and besides, this one has Elsa on it!” She had already taken it ought of the box so we couldn’t return it that time.

So, this Christmas, I had a brand new baby. Two weeks before he was born, I was home from work with a horrible cough. My stepmother called to see how I was and I told her I was doing my Christmas shopping early online. Without thinking, I proceeded to describe the toys I was purchasing for my kids. Months later, when we were celebrating Christmas with my dad, I opened up precisely the exact presents I had purchased for my son, including a custom wooden train that had the letters of his name spelled out on it. As she watched me open the name train, which I had discussed with her on several occasions and which I had been really excited about, she smiled and said, “I know you already got him one, but this one is bigger and it’s better because it has magnets on it and now he can have two!”

Fortunately, I’m breastfeeding, so I had not been drinking.

I did not yell or call her names. I did not ram the train down her throat or even throw it across the room. I told her that I had put a great deal of thought and love into the gifts that I had chosen for my kids and that I was hurt that she had decided to copy me. She then proceeded to deny that she had known what I was getting, forgetting that she had just admitted that she had known. She then tried to say that she had bought her train first and I asked why she hadn’t told me that she’d bought one the multiple times I’d discussed it with her. Not having an answer for that she began to wail and moan about having “double pneumonia” over the summer and how she was going to lose her house. At that point, my husband and I left with my stepmother screaming at me that I need to “check my hormones”.

I’m just really tired of this. It’s obvious that she is mentally ill and has limited abilities to control herself but that doesn’t mean that her actions don’t hurt and don’t have an effect on me and my family. How much BS is a step-daughter obligated to put up with?

You’re describing someone with a mental illness or a serious social deficit. I don’t know what’s wrong with her, but she is a bubble off from plumb.

Tell her nothing. Always ask about her life first and practice prattling on and interviewing her about whatever she says about herself and whatever she thinks, because you surely don’t want the topic to get around to you or yours! Other than that, concern yourself only with handling her in a way that is easy on your dad. (The poor man has her every day, which cannot be easy.)

Really, look at this as dealing with some kind of a dementia, because she is seriously off. If she asks about gifts, I’d suggest something having to do with food. Duplicates are a lot easier to deal with when it is chocolate. Use your imagination to work around her quirks, because you probably will not ever change them. The other possibility is to buy two gifts, tell her about the one you intend to be from her, and plan to return it when it becomes the duplicate of whatever she buys. If your daughter wants a Barbie dream house with a car, tell your SMIL that you’re shopping for Barbie convertibles. You buy the dream house, but say nothing to her about it. Voila, she shows up with “the perfect gift,” which is the convertible! Do not forget to gush accordingly and make a big deal out of her gift. (Remember, you’re not dealing with a normal person. You could tell that person the whole plan, and they’d play their part. You are not dealing with that person.)

Oh, I figured that out within a year of meeting her! I almost never tell her anything that I wouldn’t put on facebook because, frankly, whatever I tell her is highly likely to be posted by her on facebook! This gift copying thing, however, is a newer development, and I gave her one of those stupid “benefit of the doubt” things the first couple of times. That always comes back to bite me! I didn’t really believe that she had forgotten that I had bought that ride-on toy, but I let it go because it was theoretically possible that it had slipped her mind. Now what do I have to show for being charitable? I’m constantly tripping over an extra ride-on toy that sings “Let It Go” whenever it get’s bumped and my step-mother’s behavior has escalated to not only getting duplicate toys that my kids already had, but copying the presents I’m currently giving! The new rule is going to have to be that she has to tell me what she got the kids before I’ll let them open any gifts.

I lived your life once (MIL has since passed). Boundaries, boundaries, boundaries…and as my husband used to say, “The only thing she’s going to know about us is how tall our grass is.”

Have pity on her, as there is some element of cognition when is lacking. Try to be compassionate but know to never discuss anything other than neutral topics (if you want to speak to her at all). Aside from trying to 1-up everyone who gives a gift, are there other troubles? God bless. Be assured of my prayers.

Is there any way you can confide to your dad what she is doing? Maybe get him on your side?

Without being conniving or telling anyone what you’re doing… I’d use her quirk to my advantage. When she presses you about what you are going to buy for your kids, think of things you’d like her to get for them and say you are thinking of those. Some people are just so confusingly odd.

The other “troubles” are mostly minor annoyances and inconveniences. Fortunately, her weirdness is generally pretty predictable. This one threw me for a loop though.

I think she’d just pick stuff she already knew I’d gotten, like in the case of the ride-on toy. She had seen my girl riding it around our house. Besides, I don’t know how to do that without conniving. That’s pretty conniving.

He knows what she’s doing, but he doesn’t want to believe that she’s doing it purposefully or compulsively. He wants us all to just pretend that it was a perfectly honest mistake that anyone could make. He’s one for “keeping the peace”, no matter how much pain and injustice in causes.

Allegra,

I think the ride-on toy is talking to you!

Let it goooooo…to Goodwill.

Well, he can’t deny that she does it.

Treat this like a fault that she can’t change, and work around it. You don’t have to trust her, except to do exactly what she’s been doing. You’ll do well to accept that and make your plans accordingly.

I mean not conniving in the sense of being vengeful or paying back in motive. It reminded me of a strange thing when I was in my early 20’s in a share house with some other girls. There was one girl who kept taking photo’s of me when I was just woken up in my pjs or generally looking awful and she would stick them on our cork board in the kitchen where everyone could see. The first time I just took it down quietly without saying anything. Lo and behold she did it again. Cr-ppy photo just as I was about to do my makeup one day and then puts it up on the cork board. To this day I don’t know what she was trying to do other than maybe embarrass me. So I just started making weird faces or Quasimodo stances when I could see she was about to take a pick of me that I knew was for whatever she was doing. I made a joke of it and she didn’t do it after that.

For the life of me I couldn’t really understand why she did it but I had a sense that there was something that I couldn’t approach directly without making things weird… so I did my thing of laughing with it and playing up to it.

With your stepmother, that’s what I was suggesting. Do something that makes everybody a winner in the situation rather than create more drama.

Clearly she has self-esteem issues. It always has to be about HER.

I don’t have any advice, but I have known a couple of people like this.
I’ll keep you in my prayers. This has to be a real drag.

😦

Evil me would just love to play with her mind, however, the beautiful in me says - Let it go. I believe that every family has one. Which worries me as given the number of these souls and their right to vote and drive, we should have more deaths on the road and worse politics… sorry, forgot there are a lot of Americans on this site… a lot worse politics.
Many posters have given wise suggestions of gift hints that would be good for your child.
I believe special prayers are needed for her husband as well as yourself for patience and forbearance. The man is obviously one of those hidden saints.
Not everyone has the opportunity to gain grace through interaction with a step mother. This is normally found only in fairy stories. I believe you should take advantage of this and offer it up in reparation. I wish I had someone really annoying in my life… yes, Dear, I will be off the computer in a minute…No Dear, I am not saying anything about your mother…

Looking at this from another perspective:

She is making your father happy.
You don’t have to live with her.
Your children have grandparents that care enough to give them gifts.

I can’t justify her behavior. But the next time she gives a duplicate gift, you might say jokingly “Goodwill is really starting to Love us. And it is nice to know these other children who may have nothing are getting something very special”.

Or sell the duplicates in a yard sale and make a donation in her name.

Pray for her.

God Bless You.

Is there anyway you could be more ‘forceful’ with your dad and have a private talk with him and really tell him that this really has to stop or else you won’t be coming around with the kids as much?

If it was me I would just say ‘Dad, if you don’t want to tell her to stop, I will respect you, but I am telling you right now, all duplicate toys I don’t have time to take to charity will go straight to the trash. After all, dad, it is your money being wasted’

Not saying that is the best way, just what I would do

Allegra,

I think the ride-on toy is talking to you!

Let it goooooo…to Goodwill.
The funny thing is, it’s too small for her to ride in the first place. She only likes it because she loves that song! My MIL bought her a music box that plays the same song for Christmas, so now maybe we can get rid of the ride-on!👍

I don’t really think it’s my dad’s job to make her stop. He isn’t her father. However, he could take a more active role in the gift choosing. Whether he wants to admit it or not, he is now fully aware that this is happening and that it bothers me. He doesn’t want to be in conflict with me any more than anyone else, so I suspect he may start doing that. I’m not depending on it, but there’s always hope!

  1. That’s a whole other thread, but let’s just say, that it’s a debatable point.
  2. I don’t live with her now. We were just visiting. I’ve actually never lived with her. If she doesn’t get her finances in order though, they may be moving into my basement!
  3. Gifts aren’t always genuine and children really shouldn’t be the subjects of someone’s compulsive behaviors if it can be avoided.

Oh, that is so tough. In both my and DH’s family, the same tact was taken. In mine, it was not with gifts, as we wanted me to get something son would enjoy and not step on toes.

In your family SMIL seems like she is begging for some sort of attention. This is very, very sad, as there does not have to be and competition. Does she do this only with children’s gifts or to all members of the family–you, DH, dad, anyone else?

This may require a few long talks with that if he’s willing to listen. If not, all bets are kind of off, don’t you think? Please PM if you like…I can talk freer about this subject.
