I think that would be considered taking away the unitive aspect.
Which part?

If sperm can get through…

I think if your husband lights you on fire, the unitive aspect is pretty much trashed. Until figured out of course.

And if you were only having sex on your “safe” days anyway… It seems you’re still open to life… without being open to a burning sensation…

So does robbery and working. They both accomplish obtaining money. Is there no difference between working and robbing a bank?
👍 I like that comparison.

I have heard of semen allergy in women, but I would rule out the possibilty of infection (on both sides) as this can disturb the pH balance of your ‘fluids’.

She could also be very stressed. It sounds like she is going through a lot at the moment and stress can manifest itself in strange ways.

My wife and I were married six months ago and have been practicing NFP since then. My wife is in medical school and we want to have children, but these next few months in preparation for her boards, it would not be healthy for a baby ( constant studying, sleepless nights, coffee by the gallons) and her time is limited. Her complaints with NFP is that she says my semen burns her and causes great discomfort. She says it’s unberable and has she does not wish to continue. Has anyone experienced this?

On more of the theological and scientific side, she can not differentiate between NFP and ABC on the grounds that it accomplishes the same thing.

Thank you

Anthony
Semen should not burn. I definitely experience a mild sensation of some kind from it, but I wouldn’t call it burning. Its short lived and not a big deal. She should go to her doctor and should be very specific about the pain, where she experiences the pain and when she experiences it.

If its mild discomfort, I mean, that’s sex. It isn’t always perfect. But if its unbearible, that’s not normal. She needs to get herself checked out and seek a true resolution to this issue.

In regards to understanding the difference, NFP is periodically abstaining selectively during your fertile time. There is an element of actively choosing to have sex on your infertile time when you’re not necessarily in the mood, but that’s not done as a form of family planning. That is done because sex is important to a marriage. If you merely wait for the urge to mutually hit you, than you’ll end up abstaining far more than you need. But in regards to actual family planning, having sex on your infertile days is now what makes NFP effective. What makes NFP effective is the abstainence during the fertile days.

ABC exists to enable a couple to have sex whenever they feel like it without getting pregnant. It is something the couple does to divert the sexual act from one of its major purposes for even existing.

Its important to understand that each and every sexual act by its nature is oriented toward procreation, regardless of whether a woman is ovulating or not. Whether or not we get pregnant is not our choice. Sex is rather opening ourselves the gift of children. Sex is not fertilization. We have no control over whether fertilization occurs. But whenever we are engaging in sex, we have to accept the nature of sex. This is why NFP is moral - its abstainence. When a couple engages in sex in their infertile period, their act is still oriented toward procreation. The egg doesn’t have to be there for this orientation to exist. We’re not trying to get around our fertility to satisfy our carnal urges. We’re sacrificing sexual activity out of a since of responsibility.

That said, if the pain is really intense, I can understand why it’d be difficult to view sexual activity as something naturally oriented toward intercourse. Sexual pain (which I have a lot of experience with) can really mess up your sexuality. You want to avoid intercourse at all cost and yet you still have sexual urges. Intercourse for me did not seem to be where my desires could take me. In fact, my fear of the pain made it difficult to get aroused if I knew we were planning on attempting it. But I can say that once I overcame much of my experience with the pain, things started naturally orienting themselves more and more toward intercourse and it became less of a artifically forced activity I had to do to morally rationalize our other sexual behavior to something I actually looked forward to with my husband. But between those several months of not feeling that orientation was there, it did feel like that was an arbitary teaching the Church had. It didn’t feel real and it was very tempting to deny it.

On the other hand, it may have something to do with dryness. And the stress of finishing up medical school. Since you can’t use lubricants because of the effect they have on the mucus test, I would suggest more and more intense foreplay.

A vaginal infection of some kind or another could also increase sensitivity to pain.
Who on earth says you can’t use lubricants because of the effect they have on the mucus test?! I use Creighton which solely relies on mucus obversations, and not once was I told you couldn’t use lubricants during the training. And in practice, I can say that they do not have any effect.

If she’s saying its the semen than I would assume that she is experiencing pain after sex has been completed and not during it, so I don’t know what lubricants would have to do with it.

Yeah, I’d agree with this. When sex is painful and you’re trying to force yourself through a sexual encounter the “morally right way” because you’re over-emphasizing the procreative aspect over the unitive aspect, the unitive can be completely lost. I know, because when I suffering extreemly with vaginismus and before we were going through treatment we tried to force sex so much on and ignore all the pain I was experiencing and its just…its horrible for both people. When you’re to the point that the man can’t stay aroused if he doesn’t mentally disassociate himself from you because you’re wincing in terrible pain, it just has nothing to do with the personalistic norm that Pope John Paul II speaks of.

Twoangels…
Thats so horrible. Why on earth would you and your husband disregard your intense pain and try to force it??? I don’t understand this, please explain. I think if I were married and my husband wanted to go ahead/ignored that I were in pain that would destroy trust and respect for him…

to the OP: I am not married, but I have a close friend who told me about a similar problem… she had pain during sex and she actually resented the husband for not trying to understand… What I understood about it was, that since they were newly married the guy hadn’t learn to arouse the girl, and thus she wasn’t moist enough for the sexual encounter to be pleasant… You know? This is simple biology.
So maybe you should just try to make a good foreplay, take the time and effort to really make your wife ready. Women need that, whereas men go off like rockets. It will take some discipline on your side, but it will be worth it 🙂

As for the semen “burning” her, I have never heard this, not to say it is not true or does not happen, but sounds very strange, almost as in an excuse. With all the stress she may be under, I would think that becoming pregnant would be more difficult, but someone can correct me on that if I am incorrect
In response to those that said this burning could be an allergy and a real issue I stated:
Filing this now under the “learn something new everyday” file.

Thanks.

(fyi - the only reason I said “excuse” was that based on how it was written and she not wanting to have a child she could have no interest in sex and that would be a way to avoid it. Not sure if the “burning” compaint has been there since they were first married 6 months ago. Just a thought that was all. Understand that this is not something to vocalize to her, just something to think about.)
Yeah. I’ve never experienced it either, but I’ve heard of it. It’s a Real Thing and it’s not very nice imo to assume or suggest that she’s lying about this. (not the OP, but a pp said it sounded like an “excuse”.)
I have tried to explain why I felt that it could have been an “excuse” (see “honey I have a headache”). The OP did not mention this was a “problem” when they first got married and now it is? They are not wanting to have a child, avoiding sex would accomplish this so that is why I thought it was a possibility.

To the OP, I did not mean to assume such.

I’ll pray for both of you! She should see her doctor - and you can talk to your priest about how to handle this or perhaps your Diocese has the NFP instructors who can help/educate in these situations - that is, if your wife is open to learning more about NFP. Sounds like she’ll need to find out what is causing her this discomfort and address thoese issues first though.

Because “The Good News about Sex and Marriage” and “Holy Sex” all stated that it was immoral to intentionally climax outside of the woman. I would have rather been in intense pain than be in mortal sin. Granted, I had a limited pain tolerance and my husband couldn’t stand causing me that much pain, so we would typically stop the attempts. Things just weren’t improving and weeks were passing and we hadn’t been able to consumate our marriage. After deciding to take the typical advice of increasing foreplay, we set out a day where we had from 4pm to when we went to bed. We had a candlelight dinner, I got a wonderful back rub from my husband, we went really slow and in the end it was still impossible. So I sought advise from my married friends again and got lectured about recognizing how rejected my husband must feel and about how sex isn’t like the movies. I don’t think anyone thought it could be physically impossible. I think they all thought I was just being whimpy about the normal pain involved in losing your virginity.

LOL! I think we get where you are coming from now… I can see how a woman, as a woman, who is completely stressed out with school, and is in pain with sex would want to avoid everything right now. As a woman who likes sex… I can tell you women that like sex, don’t just find excuses to quit having sex. Kinda like men. I’m betting there is a valid reason here.

Regardless, I think it’s really important for people in general to realize that not all allergies manifest instantly. Whereas some people may eat a nut, go into anaphylactic shock and die. Others will start to build an immune response. Which is why one slowly becomes miserable until the allergy, if that’s the case, is treated.

So, I think OP, you’ve got some possible solutions. And if nothing else a sounding board to start some deeper discussions. 'Cause IF this isn’t medical, you both have some things to work on… Prayers!

That’s a very sad story! I can’t imagine how horrible you felt, trying over and over again. I can’t imagine your loving husband would feel rejected when he saw your actual pain. Frustrated sure. But I doubt this was a tearless time in your life. Only a very selfish man would take your physical pain personal. IMO. I’m so glad you live in an era where these problems are no longer “in your head”. Where a DOCTOR can recognize and validate the real pain and agony you must have went through.

I feel for any woman whose friends are so heartless they would rather subject her to torture than acknowledge her brain is strong enough to recognize pain. That they would FAIL in suggesting a doctor to find a cause they just didn’t understand in their “expert” opinions. We are designed to have intelligent bodies as well!
