The ongoing Wikileaks “Cablegate” project could result in the release of more than 800 U.S. diplomatic cables involving the Vatican.

The CNA article is really library references to articles we cannot access at the moment since the Wikileaks site is down and the Guardian newspaper is not exactly Vatican friendly in its search facility. Not all links work properly on the Guardian site. I downloaded a list of references to Vatican related articles but neither google more wikileaks seem to actually field any readable material.

The Wikileaks founder, Assange, thought his leaks would somehow cause a worldwide uprising, stir, and total revolution. Well, so much for that…:p:D

Well the Vatican embassy leaks seem to be coming out now:

213.251.145.96/reldate/2010-12-10_0.html

They add insight into the Vaticans political positions and from my perspective as an Anglican I see little to the Catholic Churches disadvantage in what has been said. Indeed it adds a little context where the media were happy to leap to the sensationalist headline but the real thinking behind the issue was much deeper and often more concerned about the real issues than the media gave it credit for e.g. Irish sex abuse scandals.

Particular insights were for example that the Catholic church regarded peaceful coexistence as a higher priority with Muslims that the shallower notion entertained by the Western world of tolerance.

Of course the US diplomats themselves talk in a slightly artificial way about what is both a spiritual and secular state reflecting the church state separation of their own culture. I do not know if this diminishes the capacity to articulate and understand the Vaticans reasonings on decisions or not.

The catch of the Wikileaks season is SECURITY be it enterprise, national or cyber security every such organisation is facing this threat. This point forces us to think about the credibility of IT security in business and government. It is about leaking confidential information which ultimately affects our enterprise…and as I went through a blog written by a Microsoft security expert I got interesting insights on it…he strongly pushes the idea of identity, security and access. Just in case you could not find it here is the link for it

This whole mess is just the result of sloppy and inadequate security. Everybody involved is going to happen to tighten up.

It was an interesting article and a great many ISM managers will undoubtedly use this to justify the expense of building proprietary corporate networks but I think the business momentum at the moment is towards openness and transparency and greater use of the web with restrictions on only a minority of documents because it is cheaper, easier to maintain, and faster to implement and better for most companies business processes - allowing greater degrees of informed customer interaction.

With so much information being created every day placing restrictions often simply means it does not get used.

I think the best response for a company is to go with the trend to transparency for most of what they do and just ensure that a squeaky clean honesty is maintained in their organisations.

But so also they need to develop non web based or encrypted networks for the truly dangerous stuff e…g pricing plans, product blueprints, confidential correspondence, private customer info. Microsoft or Google might not be the best platforms for such an interest in security.

Personally I believe we are in the era of proprietary cloud computing on company specific networks joined together by the wider web. Defending the clouds from unauthorised leaks becomes the key issue and how to protect the information that sits within them.

It should be possible to make it impossible for even a malicious insider to transfer the data he has access to on a read only basis.

The link given above is quite pertinent to the whole wikileaks issue and national security. It is actually very threatening to see how the people from your enterprise itself leak your confidential information. Well we can only raise our voice against the whole incident which is happening.
