So what if he did advocate contraception? It’s high time that the Church updates its antiquated views on this and other issues.
Truth is not antiquated. It’s eternal. Therefore, it cannot change. If we change truth, then we change reality. If reality can be changed, then what are we. There is no such thing as a transient reality. Reality is what it is. You cannot change it.
The Holy Father did not say that he approves contraception. He said the same thing that Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI said. There is the possibility that a method normally used as a contraceptive can be used for another purpose, to prevent the spread of disease. That’s not the same thing as approving contraception.
Look at it this way, there are medications used as for birth control that also serve other purposes such as regulating a woman’s menstrual cycle, shrinking cysts in a polycystic ovary or even acne.
If we do not accommodate trends in the secular world, the secular world will no longer accommodate us, and then where would we be?
The Church is not supposed to accommodate to the secular world. The Church has to speak to the secular world the truth that is immutable in a language that the secular world can understand. She can change her language and modes of delivery, but not the content.
Have you ever been around a good teacher? A good teacher does not change the rules of mathematics. He changes the methodology according to the learning styles of the students, but teaches the same rules and laws of math that Euclid taught centuries ago. The Church is also a teacher. Like all good teachers, she must change her method to reach her audience, not the subject content.
Christ is the center of the Church. He does not change. The truth that he has revealed to mankind cannot be changed. If the Church did that, then she would no longer be the Church of Jesus Christ. She would be the Church of man.
