Will Hell be EMPTY?

Here’s what Urs Von Balthazar believes about hell: it exists, it’s real, and it is certainly possible that many, many souls will one day reside there. However, we do not know with absolute certainty that souls will or will not reside there – God does not confide his judgements of others to us on earth.

Therefore, according to Urs Von Balthazar, it is perfectly appropriate, and indeed necessary, for us to hope – *hope – *that all souls may be saved.

I have serious reservations about Urs Von Balthazar on a number of counts, part of which may be due to the fact that I’ve only read a little. But before you condemn him outright, consider the words of the Fatima prayer:

“Oh my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell. Lead all souls to heaven, especially those who most need Thy mercy”.

Read somewhere that at death God gives you the choice between him and Hell. I know this is pure speculation. But, its certainly nice to think of it like that, and if you truly want to reject God, then into hell you go. Also, i think for sure hell will not be empty. Too many people living in sin ( if you ignore what i said above :o ).

I feel so depressed that people go to hell, and that there is NO way out. I wish that there was some really hard way for them to get out. Everytime I start thinking about Hell, it pulls me back into saintly mode, maybe i should get a band to wear that says remember hell on it. 😃
Everybody lives in sin.

There is a passage in the Gospels where Jesus says, “You can ask anything in my name and it will be granted.”

In the parable of the man who had a very late night visitor, the owner of the house went to his neighbor’s house and knocked and knocked and knocked and knocked until his neighbor who was going to sleep simply gave up and opened the door. Jesus tells us to also do likewise when asking God.

In the Book of Jonah, the prophet Jonah was commanded by God to prophecy this DECLARATIVE statement, “FORTY DAYS AND NINIVEH WILL BE DESTROYED” The warning which was repeated again and again and again again had NO CONDITIONS. THE PROPHECY SAID THAT THEY WILL BE DESTROYED. BUT THE PEOPLE AND KING OF NINEVEH, INSTEAD OF GETTING MAD OR CURSING GOD, THEY ACKNOWLEDGED THEY WERE WRONG, REPENTED, WORE SACKCLOTH, COVERED THEMSELVES AND THEIR ANIMALS WITH ASHES. THE KING INSTEAD OF SITTIN ON HIS THRONE, SAT ON THE ASHES.

According to the lady lecturer on EWTN TV about 20 years ago, THOUGH IN THEOLOGY IT IS TAUGHT THAT GOD DOES NOT CHANGE, THERE IN THE BOOK OF JONAH IT SAYS, GOD REPENTED OF THE EVIL THAT HE INTENDED TO UNLEASH AND DID NOT DESTROY NINIVEH.

On the contrary, GOD SCOLDED THE PROPHET JONAH and said something like this; You want me to destroy 150,000 sinners who have repented not to mention the thousands of cows and other animals all because you prophecied that Niniveh will be destroyed in 40 days??? God is the Creator of all. You yourselves have built things in life. YOU ENJOY DESTROYING WHAT YOU BUILT? So if these humans that God made, IF THEY WOULD ONLY REPENT, ESPECIALLY IF WE AND THEY AND THE SAINTS, ANGELS BLESSED MOTHER, JESUS , THE SOULS IN PURGATORY ASK ASK ASK, WE SHOULD HAVE ENOUGH FAITH TO BELIEVE THAT GOD WILL FORGIVE. And then ST. THOMAS AQUINAS’ PICTURE THAT “ALL CREATION CAME FROM GOD. LIKE A BOOMERANG, ALL CREATION SHOULD GO BACK TO GOD” WILL COME TRUE, but not my will, not our will, but THY WILL OH FATHER BE DONE, IN JESUS’ NAME WE PRAY.

In Fatima, I think it was Jacinta who asked the Blessed Mother with regards to souls in hell, something like, “But Blessed Mother, WHAT IF THEY REPENT?” And the Blessed Mother said, “BUT THEY NEVER REPENT!!!” (maybe, over here is a hint, If we can only some how cause them to repent. Of course they might be the kind who when the fire is hot are cursing, are angy instead of repenting)

When God evicted 1/3 of the angels from heaven, these bad angels were not cast down into hell but INTO THE EARTH!!! So maybe at the moment, there is nobody there in hell.

A caller to Fr. Pacwa, SJ, said that a priest was telling them that for mortal sins to be committed, you need 3 things namely FULL KNOWLEDGE, FULL CONSENT SERIOUS MATTER. The priest said, WE HUMANS DO NOT HAVE THE FULL KNOWLEDGE TO KNOW ALL THE CONSEQUENCES OF OUR ACTIONS OR SINS. SO IN THIS VIEW, WE HUMANS CANNOT REALLY COMMIT THESE KINDS OF MORTAL SINS WHICH WILL SEND US TO HELL. Fr. Pacwa said, “I’d like to confess to that priest!!!”
What if we talk to the devils who tempt us and tell them that we will try and try and try to ask and ask and ask God to forgive them if they too will only try and try and try to be good angels and not tempt people to sin. Instead they should go and talk to their fellow devils and to souls who might be in hell or might be condemned to hell, tell them to repent, repent, repent. We might only be humans, BUT TO HUMANS JESUS PROMISED SOMETHING WHICH I DON"T THINK HE PROMISED TO THE ANGELS OR THE THE DEVILS. TO HUMANS, JESUS SAID IN THE GOSPELS, “YOU CAN ASK ANYTHING IN MY NAME, AND IT WILL BE GRANTED.” I THINK IT WILL BE IN GOD’S WILL IF OUR INTENTION IS TO BRING BACK ALL CREATION TO GOD. Of course, not my will, not our will, BUT THY WILL OH FATHER BE DONE, IN JESUS’ NAME WE PRAY.

Considering how many saints of the church, like, I’m remembering St. John Chrysostom particularly, but I’ve also heard several quotes from different saints, to the effect that few, very few will actually be in heaven. Not to be taken, I’m sure, to mean “few in number” but rather few in relation to the number in hell.

Not a comforting thought, but considering the seriousness the Church now puts, from Jesuit theologians of the Middle Ages and 19 century, and from Vatican 2 onward, nature of and the requirements for invincible/inculpable ignorance, it is hard to see how many outside the Church could be saved, considering that perhaps so many IN IT will not be saved!!

This death sentence is analogous to the death sentence announced by Jonah, a death sentence, a prophecy announced on command of God to Jonah.

Yet, because of REPENTANCE, the prophecy which is SCRIPTURE was cancelled.

More important than prophecy is LOVE.

Well, on this topic, isn’t that essentially what you pray for during the course of the Rosary?

** O my Jesus, … ,; lead all souls to heaven, especially those in most need of Thy mercy.
**
And, according to many post-Vatican 2 theologians and ecumenists, one not even need to have a desire to be a part of the Church in order to be saved. Merely ignorance is good enough, and living a good life according to the dictates of one’s consciousness. And that leaves the door wide open. Man’s consciousness leading him, whew!!

So, maybe non-Catholic Christians and even non-Christians can be saved, and likely will be since modern Catholicism presumes their non-culpability. However Catholics that live faithfully most of their life, but at the very end of their life die with unconfessed/unrepented mortal sin… not a chance. Likely, Hell will only have Catholics in it. Purgatory will have only people who don’t believe in Purgatory, and they will soon be received into Heaven.

You’re better off not being Catholic, in my humble opinion. Find a good reason to reject the Church, and then you’re “Scott Free.”

I just set that forth to rekindle discussion on the topic of Hell. If that’s what the Church is destined to teach, then so be it, but I doubt many here will believe it.

No. We are praying for all those souls who have yet to receive particular judgment from God condemning them to hell. Those already condemned to hell cannot be saved.
And, according to many post-Vatican 2 theologians and ecumenists, one not even need to have a desire to be a part of the Church in order to be saved.
The erroneous opinions of the taught Church have nothing to do with Catholic doctrine. If it ain’t in Scripture and Tradition, as described in the Catechism, the Acta Apostolicae Sedis, and the councilar decisions of the Catholic Church, then it ain’t Catholic doctrine, no matter how many wacky opinions you may find among the sinners on earth who assert the contrary.
Merely ignorance is good enough, and living a good life according to the dictates of one’s consciousness. And that leaves the door wide open. Man’s consciousness leading him, whew!!
This is nothing more than a caricature, not Catholic doctrine.

And in my humble opinion, your opinion is rubbish, based upon nothing but a poor caricature which cannot be supported by actual Catholic doctrine.

You can’t fake invincible ignorance with God, but go ahead and try it, then you’ll truly know whether there is a hell or not, and how long it will last. 😉

But if it is Catholic doctrine you are interested in, and not merely a strawman, then Hell is everlasting, and those cast into it will be tormented forever and ever.

Over in “Ask an Apologist,” Peggy Frye writes…

The teaching that the punishment of Hell lasts for all eternity is a dogma of the Catholic faith. Catholics must believe it by faith.

Excerpt from Fundamentals of Catholic Dogma by Dr. Ludwig Ott:

The punishment of Hell lasts for all eternity. (De fide.)

"The Caput Firmiter of the Fourth Lateran Council (1215) declares: “Those (the rejected) will receive a perpetual punishment with the devil.”

Hell

List of dogmas

God bless you!

I feel compelled to add, however, that I am not yet comfortable with rejecting the proposition of Cardinal Hans Urs von Balthazar that it is possible that Hell will be EMPTY at the end of time.

The logic of Cardinal von Balthazar’s opinion is this: Will the bloody sacrifice of the New Testament Adam, Christ, be less potent than the evil wrought by the sin of Adam?

To put it another way, Wouldn’t Christ be clever enough to effectively confront ALL of the manifestations of evil?

I do not yet ascribe to von Balthazar’s thesis, but I am still hestitant to reject it.

–BIBLEREADER
It has nothing to do with the “potency” of Christ’s sacrifce, but everything to do with man’s free will. If a person denies Christ, that is the sinner’s choice. God will not force heaven upon the person who denies Him. The choice is ours. Christ’s sacrifice does not cancel free will!

This may answer the question. People die - they go to Purgatory, Hell or Heaven. After the last judgement (at the end of the world) those in Hell will thrown into the everlasting Pit of Fire. So yes Hell will be emptied into the Pit of Fire. I hope I am correct - I think I am.

In defense of Reformed Rob - when I was studying to become Catholic a very good Evangelical friend told me that I am going to notice that Catholics are uncomfortable and almost unwilling to recognize that anyone other than “bad Catholics” will be sent to hell. When she told me that I thought, oh that’s silly - the Bible is full of warnings that we ALL face the possibility of hell - by our own chosing - but I’m beginning to wonder if there was some truth to her opinion?

Thanks Carol,

There might be some truth to her opinion, in that you might “find things that way (ie. people uncomfortable realizing that…)” but that doesn’t mean that’s the way it actually is.

Actually, doesn’t it seem much easier to just cut right through all the confusion, and say that everybody except Catholics are going to Hell? Like, if I was Catholic, that would make the most sense. Come on out and just be clear about it. But things are, alas, more complicated I suppose.

Well, this can get off topic.

Just read Dante’s “Inferno.” Yeah, that’s a thought. As much as Catholic philosophy has gained from Greek myths, and Greeks and other various Pagan systems have a sort of Hell, then it’s natural to believe that there is a Hell. Not just God’s Word teaches us that, but also several non-Christian religions.
I thought of that because of the extensive use of Greek myths that Dante utilized in writing Inferno.

I suspect that the real reason that many believe that few will be in hell (or that hell might be empty) is that there is a general loss of the sense of the seriousness of sin. People think that most people who are “nice” don’t deserve to go to hell. Scripture clearly teaches that every human being, from the moment of conception, deserves eternal damnation. Even the blessed Virgin Mary remained immaculate only be grace. Without grace, she would not have been able to cooperate freely with the Holy Spirit.

When I look at Scripture and the general consensus of fathers, doctors, and theologians prior to Vatican II, I see that relatively few will be saved and enter heaven. In fact, it seems that relatively few Catholics even will be saved. I think the current popular pastoral theology that seems to teach that everyone except Osama Bin Laden is going to heaven is very dangerous. I am not certain of my own salvation. In fact, when I look at my own wickedness, I become terribly frightened. I know what I deserve. If I got what I deserve, it would be hell. Yet most people think I’m such a “sweet, nice guy.” Being a nice person will not get you into heaven. Only love of God and neighbor above all things which is a response to God’s grace will get you into heaven. How can we be saved if we do not believe that we deserve hell? This is where many evangelicals are successful in converting Catholics away from the Church. Our separated evangelical brethren are good at bringing to mind the depth of our sinfullness and the need for true repentance and conversion. I think we could learn a thing or two from them.

Depending upon who you “poll” or talk to, Catholics reportedly are too restrictive on who will attain everlasting life. Talk to another, and Catholics are too lax. I don’t believe polling people is the best way to know Catholic doctrine. The magisterium insists that such judgment is reserved to God alone. The Church’s role is to teach the truth, not decide who will go to heaven or hell.

Catholic dogma, according to two ecumenical councils states…

According to the Council of Lyons II (1274):
***those who die in mortal sin or with original sin only, however, immediately descend to hell, yet to be punished with different punishments ***[Denzinger 464]
According to the Council of Florence (1493):
the souls of those who depart in actual mortal sin or in original sin only, descend immediately into hell but to undergo punishments of different kinds [Denzinger 693]
Those familiar the Catholic moral theology ought to understand that there are MANY sins considered mortal by the Catholic Church, including missing Mass on Sunday. Will many people repent on their death beds? I dunno. That’s not my concern. My concern is that folks don’t wait until their death beds to see the light of Christ and persevere in faith.

Dave, you reminded me of that excellent source which is so often untapped!!

Pope Vigilius, in 537, apparently confirmed these canons of Emperor Justinian, which were against the errors of Origen:
Canon 9: If anyone says or holds that the** punishment** of the demons and **of impious men is temporary, and that it will have an end at some time, **that is to say, there will be a complete restoration of the demons or of impious men, let him be anathema. (Denz. #211)

Innocent III
Original (sin), therefore, which is committed without consent, is remitted without consent through the power of the sacrament (Baptism); but actual (sin), which is contracted with consent, is not mitigated in the slightest without consent… The punishment of original sin is deprivation of the vision of God, but the punishment of actual sin is the torments of everlasting hell. (Denz #411)

Note there, a baptized adult with use or reason, if he is baptized without a true faith and repentance from sin, that is, without consent, he will not receive forgiveness of actual sin. Only original sin will be forgiven, and that ex opere operato. (Right, correct me there if I’m off a little.)

Alexander IV, from “Sub Catholicae, March 1254”
…After talking about Purgatory…
24. Moreover, if anyone without repentance dies in mortal sin, without a doubt he is tortured forever by the flames of eternal hell. (Denz. 457)

Now, admittedly, Dave’s quotes were “better”, they were from Dogmatic Councils, mine were not on that level. But in their “non-dogmatic” writings, there’s what some Popes taught/affirmed.

Not nice to think about. I once heard of a preacher saying that nobody should take the pulpit unless they cry at the seriousness of Hell.

Since the original topic was not the existence of Hell, but rather the eternality of the sentence to Hell, those 3 quotes should help reinforce, extra-Biblically, the eternality of being in Hell.

In Fatima, Francisco, Jacinta, and Lucia were shown a VISION OF HELL.

I think it was Jacinta. She was so concerned about the souls in hell. I forgot what she wanted but if I remember things correctly, I think she did not want them to be punished there for ALL ETERNITY. In her talk with the Blessed Virgin Mary, I believe she said, "BUT (BLESSED MOTHER), WHAT IF THEY REPENT??? And the Blessed Mother said, “But THEY NEVER REPENT!!! THEY JUST GET ANGRIER AND ANGRIER AT GOD!!!”
But doesn’t the Gospels tell us to PREACH THE GOSPELS TO ALL CREATURES? “DOESN’T “ALL CREATURES” INCLUDE THE DEVILS?”

If we teach people to repent if they ever find themselves unfortunately in Hell, then if in the future a soul or some souls end up in hell, then they will know what to do. And when they are in hell, they can tell other souls there to do what the people of Niniveh did. REPENT!!! DO NOT GET ANGRY AT GOD!!! WHO KNOWS, GOD MIGHT SHORTEN THEIR STAY IN HELL.

Also, tell the devils to REPENT AND STOP GETTING ANGRY AT GOD. THAT WAY WHEN THEY GO TO HELL AND MEET THE OTHER DEVILS, THEY WILL REMEMBER WHAT WE TOLD THEM HERE. "REPENT!!! REPENT!!! DO NOT GET ANGRY AT GOD BUT REPENT!!! AND NEVER GIVE UP!!!

Is it a sin to tell the devils to repent??? Is it a sin to tell people not to give up on God’s mercy if they ever find themselves in hell but to REPENT!!! REPENT!! REPENT!!! REMEMBER WHAT THE PEOPLE OF NINIVEH DID!!! DESPITE BEING CONDEMMED, THEY REPENTED. AND SCRIPTURE IN THE BOOK OF JONAH SAYS, GOD REPENTED OF THE EVIL THAT HE WAS ABOUT TO UNLEASH ON NINIVEH.

Reformed Rob,
Excellent post.!

Note there, a baptized adult with use or reason, if he is baptized without a true faith and repentance from sin, that is, without consent, he will not receive forgiveness of actual sin. Only original sin will be forgiven, and that ex opere operato. (Right, correct me there if I’m off a little.)

I don’t think you have it quite right here, or at least it is more complex than that.

Firstly, the condition for valid and licit (worthy) reception of baptism for the adult recipient include: **intention of receiving Baptism, **supernatural attrition, which presupposes acts of faith, hope, and repentance.

Without right intention, the baptism is invalid, and has no effect. With intention, the baptism is valid but may not be licit unless the recipient has supernatural attrition, which presupposes acts of faith, hope, and repentance.

A valid but unworthily received baptism has the effect of producing in the soul a character, i.e., an indelible spiritual mark by which the recipient is consecrated as a servant of God. So, even if the recipient was unrepentant, if the baptism was valid, he receives the indelible mark.

Nevertheless, an unworthily received valid baptism is hindered by a barrier in the recipients soul toward receiving the gift of supernatural grace. That barrier is cause by a lack of supernatural attrition, faith, hope, and repentance. ***If this occurs, neither original nor actual sin is remitted, as the cause of remittance is supernatural grace. ***

The Sacraments cause grace ex opere operato, (i.e. by virtue of the action, means that the efficacy of the action of the sacraments does not depend on anything human, but solely on the will of God as expressed by Christ’s institution and promise), not ex opere operantis (i.e. by reason of the prayers of the Church or the good, pious sentiments of those who use them). The Sacraments are the instrumental cause of such grace. An instrumental cause produces an effect, not by its own power, but by a power which it receives from the principal agent, Almighty God.

However, "if the condition wilfully neglected [by the recipient] be grave, grace is not then conferred by the ceremony.” (Catholic Encyclopedia – Sacraments)

Nevertheless, “It is certain and admitted by all, that if Baptism be received by an adult who is in the state of mortal sin, he can afterwards receive the graces of the sacrament, viz. when the obstacle is removed by contrition or by the sacrament of Penance” (ibid.). This is termed "Reviviscence of the Sacraments."
