Will I go to Hell?

I do have a problem with the church’s rejection of Sola Scriptura, but I didn’t want to get into that debate here. In short, the Church teaches that we should read the Bible ONLY in light of the Church’s teachings. But the Bible praises those who test the Apostles by looking at Scripture. If we read the Bible in light of Church teaching, or tradition, we will likely find what we’re looking for. That is the case for any denomination. We can force any theology into Scripture that we want to. Sola Scriptura teaches that, while not ignoring tradition (we must take it into consideration), we should let the Scriptures speak for themselves, because “scripture interprets scripture” (I actually remember reading this in one of Pope Benedict’s writings, but again, you’ll have to take my word on it. I don’t remember where I read it).
I’m going to go out on a limb here and guess that Benedict didn’t say that and that you may have read it wrong. Scripture cannot “speak” and it has always been the official stance of the Church that the Church interprets scripture. My guess is there was a “cannot” in that quote, as in “scripture cannot interpret scripture”.

Again, we can start another thread on this. Sorry to go off topic.

It’s getting difficult for me to keep track of the various threads. This thread runs the risk of switching over to Sola Scriptura, which I don’t want to debate right now. So I’m going to ignore this thread, and focus on the others.

My friends, you won’t go to hell because of this. You still accept Christ as the son of god and the messiah.

Catholics belive in purgaory anyway, but it all depends on how you live your life according the law and teachings of Christ. Not about what you agree and dissagree with the church. This is my exact argument, It is all so confusing… Man has made it this way.

Yet when Peter and Paul preeched, they preached Good news and teachings of Christ. You don’t need to look into this too much. Faith over-rides all of mans teachings.

To avoid going to hell and not sin its very simple. You only need to do the will of God in the present moment.

God Bless

Yes but David, there is the little problem of knowing God’s will and who or what institution has the official teaching of it under their belts.

How are we, as humans, to know God’s will?

I probably won’t be on the forums after this afternoon for a while, so I hear where you’re coming from.

Still going to to stick to that “there’s no way Benedict claimed that scripture interprets scripture” though. 😉

I’ll look for it, and if I find it, I’ll let you know 😛

My dear, Gods will is the teachings of Christ. If you try and live your life as close as you can to Christ, Peter and Paul you won’t be short of the will of God. By trying to find Gods will through religion, is a danger of going against the very will, you may be clouded by mans effort to get to God.

Peter many times used to pray for God to guide him in the will of God, and he did.
God Bless.

Okay, I can see you’re not going to answer my question. We were having a pretty good discussion here up to this point.

The answer to your question is above. Im not here for discussion my dear, im here to answer the very first question, ive done just that. Sorry you don’t like/understand my answer.

God bless.

Thanks for being condescending, it always lends a great “lift” to the conversation. I didn’t ask what God’s will was. I asked how we are to know what it is. You didn’t answer my question. You may think you implied something, but I’m not even sure what you think you implied. How is God’s will revealed to humans?

Not to mention your beliefs go distinctly against the Catholic Church and so you should probably clarify that it’s only your very fallible opinion on the matter (since your name states that you are, in fact, Catholic), in which case it is HIGHLY subjective.

Your response was quite condescending, and doesn’t exactly reek of Christ.

I was raised Baptist, converted to Catholicism 6 years ago, and am now on the verge of leaving the church, largely because of the teaching regarding Mary. My question: according to the teaching of the Catholic Church, am I turning towards the path for Hell? (Oh, and please spare me the “Don’t leave!” or “Only God can judge” comments)
Yep.

I would say that you do not have a good understanding of Marian teachings and that is where your issues probably come from. It was my research into those same Marian teachings that actually led me home to the Catholic faith. Read My Testimony and let me suggest that you pursue your study of these teachings the way I did.

If I may, let me suggest that you invest the time in an actual Catholic study of the Blessed Virgin from an excellent Catholic source.

This course explains what the Bible says about Mary, what the Church teaches, Mary’s apparitions, how Mary relates to us in our daily lives, prayer and liturgy relating to Mary, the meaning of the Rosary, Marian sacramentals, and more. It will help you understand Catholic devotion to Mary and explain it to others.
You can get the study for free at the Catholic Home Study Service

Please don’t hesitate to contact me by PM if I can help you along the way.

Really? You might reconsider that in the context of what the New Testament teaches about religion.
James 1:26 And if any man think himself to be religious, not bridling his tongue, but deceiving his own heart, this man’s religion is vain. 27 Religion clean and undefiled before God and the Father, is this: to visit the fatherless and widows in their tribulation: and to keep one’s self unspotted from this world.

Gods will is revealed to Humans by the holy spirit. Ive already said this.

Church Militant, you follow your religion, pasterKromus, you follow your own religion too… im following Christ.

"Your response was quite condescending, and doesn’t exactly reek of Christ. "

This is the exact problem we are facing. It is because people dont agree with a particular church, they are “Against Christ”

I find that to be very against exatcly what Christ stands for. I know many people who don’t belong to any religion or church, yet believe in Christ and God. They don’t know in great detail about it but believe in God and also believe in the teachings of Christ.

Now, blessed are these people, for these have been given the gift of the holy spirit. They are good people, these particular guys give money to many charities, they are totally humble, so so kind and love everyone.

Now, they live better lives than many catholics. Many Catholics are also in danger of the deadly sins. They look down the nose of others, when infact they are more immoral than the person they are looking down on.

Can you tell me, because one doesnt follow the teachings of many corrupt popes that he is against Christ. ?

Here is a little example i heard about from a close freind.

A women attended a funeral and she was desperatly ill herself, after the funeral she had pains in her chest and knew she was having a heart attack. She asked the priest to go for confession as the funeral was over. The priest said, as you are not catholic i cant hear your mortal sins.

She knelt down and begged the priest that she was going to die and she wanted to confess all her sins.

The catholic priest walked away.

She believed in Christ and God, yet the priest has been taught by the catholic church to not listen to confession. Yet she was baptised by the father son and holy spirit, the same way that Peter and Paul baptised the gentiles and jews.

Now, she was denied confession by the priest because of the clouded rules and regulations by the church.

This lady was a good person, and did not deserve to be abandend like this. So, she used the same small room to pray to God and ask forgivness for all her sins. The candels next to her lit by themself, the 5 people in the church were crying because that wasa sign from God she was at peace.

Then she died in hospital. This is the reason why i don’t follow religion anymore. It is clear to me now, that God wants us to follow exactly, EXACTLY what Christ teaches, not follow the rules of men wearing fancy clothes. If my beliefs put me as a catholic, christian or anything else i don’t care. I only care about what Christ tells us how to live.

Praise God forever!
Bless you all.

Formal schism is a mortal sin, and mortal sin leads to Hell.

As for Mary, the Catechism says this and this about Mary.

Thanks Eucharisted - It’s always good to go to exactly what the church’s position is on a topic when she is so misunderstood. 👍

Welcome to my world! Born catholic, I initially left the catholic church due to poor catechesis and joined an evangelical church years ago. When I discovered authentic catholic instruction through the work of apologists like Karl Keating and Scott Hahn I gained a fundamental understanding of Catholic doctrine and returned to the Church. The problem I had overlooked is the fact that the Catholic Church preaches a completely different, perhaps even contrary gospel than what’s found in the New Testament. Are you and I going to Hell? The Bible says no!

I wish I could be so sure. The Bible also says the road to hell is wide while the one to heaven is narrow.

Go check out what John Macarthur has to say about assurance. He is very solid on the authority of scripture and what it has to say about assurance of salvation. His website is extremely comprehensive with tons of resources regarding your concerns.

And how long will it be before you are disillusioned with evangelicals again…?
