I very much want to quit the catholic church and become an
Assembly of God member. Am i doomed for hell?

I don’t fit in with the CC, there is no enthusiasm there.

If you want to quit the Catholic Church, why are you concerned with if you’re doomed to hell from the Catholic perspective?

That is not a very good reason to leave the Church that Jesus established. Church is not a place of entertainment but a place of worship. And yes, you could be putting your soul in danger. Do you know that the Catholic Church is the True Church, the one that Jesus established for you?

Only God can answer the question you pose in this thread. Though personally I would say you’ve probably hit upon the worst possible reason to leave. Are you seriously considering leaving because you’d rather be entertained than learn the fullness of the truth of Christ? With out error, or omission? Not to mention participating in the celebration of the Eucharist, which is the real presense. You’re going to give this up for a peppy band and whatever else?

IDK man… I don’t think I could do that.

The without error or omission is open to debate among many people. Go, explore find out where you belong. Visit churches and don’t look to be entertained. Open your heart and mind and see where you feel close to God.

Could you find a more “enthusiastic” Catholic Church in your area?

When my daughter lived in Michigan, she attended a Liguorian parish that was recommended to her by the diocescan headquarters because it was full of artists, musicians, actors, and other “arts” people in the city.

The music there was fantastic! It was all very liturgical–no rock band, no dancing, no hand-clapping, no “theater.” Absolutely nothing outside of the rubrics. But instead of doing boring hymns with boring cantors and musicians, the hymns were led by a choir that really knew how to sing in parts, and the orchestra–yes, orchestra!–was good, and the sound system was wired by someone who knew how to set up a sound system properly in a hundred-year-old building with a cathedral ceiling. And they did classical and baroque and modern and Latin and everything you can imagine (except rock and jazz and country). It was so inspiring!

And there was no applause afterwards–I often think that the reason there is applause in our churches is because good music is so rare, and people who are starved for good Christian music are saying, “THANK YOU!” In this particular parish, though, good music was the norm, and there was no need for people to applaud. It was just normal music for them.

Everything was so joyful! When I came home and told one of my priests about it, he said, “Oh, yes, the Liguorians are all about the joy of the Eucharist.”

BTW, my husband grew up in the Assemblies of God. There were a lot of problems in that denomination. About twenty years ago, his parents left the Assemblies of God after a major conflict with church politics, and didn’t attend ANY church for fourteen years because they were so disgusted with church.

Here’s the way I see it–ANY church can put on a good show. I’m a pianist. When I was Protestant (Baptist), I used to get together with the pastor and the music minister, and we would plan ways that we could influence the emotions of the congregation through various pieces of music, the lighting, the timing, the “script,” etc. We were very sincere and desirous of bringing the Gospel to the people, so don’t accuse us of faking anything. But the fact is, all that “spontaneity” in the worship service was all planned in advance and calculated to manipulate your emotions. I’m sure the Holy Spirit was at work, but He wasn’t the director of the enthusiasm–the music minister was.

Try to find a different parish with better music. Perhaps you can call your diocese headquarters and ask for the parish with the best music.

Are you considering the Assemby of God because you’re drawn to charismatic worship? There are Catholic charismatics. You might check to see if your parish prayer group is charismatic; often “prayer group” is a euphemism for charismatic prayer group, or at least that seems to be true in my area. Although the Catholic Charismatic Movement isn’t as big or as public as it once was, it’s still out there. You could google ‘Catholic Charismatic Communities’ if you’re interested, and see what’s listed in your area, or ask in your parish if there’s a charismatic group.

The personality of churches change with changes in pastors and members. What you see as enthusiasm at the AOG right now could change later. My best friend is AOG and they left their church after years of attendance because attitudes changed. Before leaving the Catholic Church, the sacraments and the Eucharist, talk it over with an understanding priest. Everything external about a church can change, but the sacraments and the Eucharist never change. Sometimes the angst we feel when we’re itching to make a change like that is really an invitation to go deeper into our own faith and relationship with God.

God bless you as you work this out.

Maybe you should talk to your parish priest, or even ask the question on the “Ask an Apologist” forum.

I’m not sure this is the best place for this discussion. Especially considering the small amount of information we have to work with.

Like, how old are you? Are you single? What do you call lack of enthusiasum? etc.

I have another idea. Seek the truth and only the truth. Don’t be surprised when it leads you right back to the Catholic Church.

Go where you feel the Lord leading you but make sure you leaving for the right reason…We have quite a few that are coming from dying churches…Some times a church change is part of the process to maturity in your walk. It’s our relationship/faith in Christ that gets us to heaven…We have a few Catholics coming to our church right now…We are in a time before the return of Christ where churches are either drawing closer to Christ while others are going the way of the world…May the Lord direct you where He desires to plant you…K

For all those criticizing a person’s desire for enthusiasm…

The word enthusiasm originally meant “to be inspired by a god”. If we don’t have this in the Church, then we are an empty witness.

Now, there are more ways to be enthusiastic than one, however. May I suggest the original poster look into the Charismatic Renewal?

To the OP, I’m one that’s holding some degree of reservation as to your honestly with the post, but will address the answer for other readers weather you are or not.

I suggest at least not to discontinue your faith by leaving the Catholic church for good and simply explore these other churches instead. You will also want to put more effort into understanding what the Catholic faith is about, especially what goes on during mass. You will find out eventually that one cannot be compared to the other, they don’t actually compete with each other, they are entirely separate entities all together and you will grow to respect what both sides have to offer, but in the end, if you are a true Catholic, not just in title or based upon some misguided concept of it, you cannot really suddenly stop being one, you know in your heart where you belong.,

Francis, I left the Assemblies of God for Catholicism.

THey do have a lot of hype. But that is just it. It’s all flash and no substance. It may work for a few years, but it’s hard to stay the course for the rest of your life, I know MAYBE 2 or 3 people who make it more than 5 years. It’s like trying to live on candy. Candy is great and has its substance, but it will leave you seriously malnourished.

There are charismatic catholics, and there are groups of people out there (like me!) that are looking for that flash AND the substance. I personally worship God best in an energetic and emotional manner. Talk to your priest, get to know people in your parish. We are out there, and we are looking for each other!! I would LOVE, seriously, LOOOOOVE to meet someone like you in my parish.

Maybe you will be rewarded for following your conscience.

For every act performed there shall be a recompense according to the estimate of God, and unto this the very ordinances and prohibitions prescribed by the Almighty amply bear witness. For surely if deeds were not rewarded and yielded no fruit, then the Cause of God – exalted is He – would prove futile. (Tablets of Baha’u’llah, p. 189)

A drop out of the ocean of Thy mercy sufficeth to quench the flames of hell, and a spark of the fire of Thy love is enough to set ablaze a whole world. (Prayers and Meditations by Bahá’u’lláh, p. 245)

**They say: ‘Where is Paradise, and where is Hell?’
Say: ‘The one is reunion with Me; the other thine own self,
O thou who dost associate a partner with God and doubtest.’
…Paradise is decked with mystic roses,
and hell hath been made to blaze with the fire of the impious.
Say: ‘The light hath shone forth from the horizon of Revelation,
and the whole earth hath been illumined at the coming of Him
Who is the Lord of the Day of the Covenant!’ **
(Baha’u’llah, Epistle to the Son of the Wolf, p. 133)

The answer of whether or not you will go to Hell…that is to face eternal separation from the Lord is entirely between you and the Lord. No person on Earth is qualified to make that call…we aren’t the judgers. He is. The best thing you can do is be the change you want to see…because going somewhere else to find it still most likely will not meet up to your expectations in the long run. Pray with sincerity for the discernment of His will, and I have no doubts you will find it.

Jesus is the one who will come again to judge the living and the dead. And, his kingdom will have no end.

If you believe that, then you believe that it will be Jesus, and your own actions not any church that decides your fate.

Yes, It’s all about faith in Christ not the church choice…Pretty good comment for an agnostic…Sure you were always one ?

Merely taking on the christian viewpoint. It’s very easy to do if one actually tries. The problem is, God does not wish for all to believe as he promises he does. I am proof of that.

Are you in your twenties…I have a nephew that feels the same…I love him and I pray for him to see the light one day…
