Those verses have important meaning, why criticise them? What do you want him to do quote the whole Bible just so you can’t accuse him with your proof text excuses? All you did here was to excuse/dismiss away God’s Word.
Sorry I upset you,but that is your opinion

And where did I question your belief?

If there are two opposing beliefs, only one could be true. We can’t both be right. That is the point of this forums.

Jesus never ever claimed He is the Church. He did however say He will build a church. That is why I said you ought to read your Bible better.

Not stuck. It is not stuck up to say what is true. A man with an IQ of 170 who claims he is intelligient is not being stuck up, merely stating a truth.
Same with the claim of the Church. The Catholic Church was born at Pentecost. Your church came probably 1600 plus years later.
And this is something you can verify if you read history.

Actually they do. That is why the Catholic Church can be said to be the founder of western civilization. She founded universities, painstakingly preserverd the Bible, was the instrument God used to write the Bible, set the canon of the Bible etc, etc.
And all this you can find out for yourself IF you are capable of thinking for yourself. 🙂

You ought to read the conversion stories of Scott and Kimberly Hahn and other protestants how have come home to the Church.

It was when they started STUDYING by themselves that they found out that the true Church is indeed the Catholic Church.

As a matter of fact it is the protestants (or at least some of them) who do not want you to find out the truth. That is why they spread lies about the Catholic Church and what she believes. The only reason they would lie is because they do not want you to find out the truth. Because if you do, then you would want to become Catholic too.

If you really have a mind of your own then start reading. Start reading things other than what your fellow protestants feed you. Read Rome Sweet Home by Scott and Kimberly Hahn. Read Surprised by Truth. If you are not afraid for your longheld beliefs to be shaken, that is. 🙂

Here are some websites to help you on your journey towards truth:

Post 342 “You on the other hand do not BELIEVE that truth so it is rather QUESTIONABLE whether you REALLY BELIEVE in Him or just covenient bits that jive with your own mindset.”

You say your right I say I’m right. We will get no place and we won’t agree so is a mute.

Upon this rock I will build MY church
Ephesians 1:23 And the church is his body
Colossians 1:18 Christ is the head of the Church, which is his body.

And I’m to be impressed by your IQ of 170 and that means your right about everything. How vain you are. Just because your church was the first don’t mean anything just that it was frist. It don’t prove its right.

They came to the church. I left the church. They forund something different and I found something different. What is your point.

I left the Catholic church because I don’t believe in some of the teachings and ways.

I do read other things besides whst they want me to read. I read about the Catholic faith and all faiths. My mind hasn’t changed like yours hasn’t changed.

Thank you I’ll look into them.

No Bill I don’t just go from verse to verse. I do some research from various sources. Besides I’m responding to the verses that the Catholics have written trying to prove their point. If you would look at the other posts you will see this. Instead of asking me, ask them if they pick up a bible and go from verse to verse trying to prove their point. It sure seems like it when they have the name, chapter, and verse quoted. Is it alright for them to do that but not alright for us to do that. Come on Bill be fair on both sides. If you accuse one of doing it and not the others thats pretty one way to me if you ask me.
Look at posts 258 and 265 you will see that I’m responding to their verses they wrote from the bible. How do you respond to what is written I know its not from memory.
No response Bill???

They used to say you couldn’t get divorced…gee, there are a TON of divorced catholics.
and REMARRIED catholics.
The catholic church is on unsteady ground, that is for sure.
and i WILL be leaving.
the mentality of the answers I received on here just cements my decision!
👍
I’m still reading through all these posts, so my posts are kind of late.
OP, I’m sorry you feel this way. I will say however, that I’m new to the church, still in RCIA and it seems that maybe I know more about some of this than you (I’m not meaning this in a mean way, so please don’t take it like that). If you have been Catholic, you should know what the church feels about divorce pre Vatican II and post Vatican II more than me.
Here’s what I know about it.
You COULD get divorced, but because Jesus said that when we are married, we’re married until the spouse dies, this means we shouldn’t get remarried. Now, when a Catholic divorces/remarries, in order to not be committing adultery, the first marriage would have to be annulled, meaning that the first ‘marriage’ wasn’t a real, valid marriage. There are many reasons this could be, for instance, in my case, I was told that if I didn’t marry my ex that I would go to hell. I didn’t marry him because I 'wanted to", I married him out of extreme fear of hell. At the time we said our vows, my heart and mind were telling me over and over that it was a mistake, and I thought before and during the vows that if he continues hitting me, I can just get a divorce. On my side of things, I never even considered this marriage a real marriage, I did it because the pastor told me to, and because I was sort of bullied into it. I’ll let the church determine his side of it.
Basically a church annulment means that the marriage, at the time of the vows was not a ‘real’ marriage, a Sacrament. Mine was not, many are not… especially in these days with vegas style weddings and 24 hour divorces everywhere.
So, the church has not changed it’s position on marriage and divorce. Many annulments are denied.
As far as your decision, I still don’t understand why you want to go backwards from where I’ve been and many others. But God gave us free will, so do whatever you want. I hope that maybe this is just a time for you to learn and that God will show Himself to you in a personal way and show you the truth. God can use any circumstance in our lives to show us His truth, so that is what I’ll pray for you 🙂

And I gave you what they meant in post 258 which are my positions about the Scriptures you claim to prove the Catholic postion. Why can’t you give me what they mean to the Catholics or were you told that they are the Catholic position without explaination. Just because you say that I gave you Scripture that proves the Catholic postion don’t prove anything, I can give you, and I have, the same Scriptures that say they prove my position. Just because you are Catholic don’t mean you are right. You can say your is the one and true religion but the Bible don’t say that. You can’t prove without a reasonable doubt that the Bible means Catholic. The Bible says the church is Jesus and he is the head of the church. It don’t say the Catholic church. it says the Church only.

Matthew 16:15-18 talking to Peter, Jesus said “upon this rock I will build my church…” If you notice Jesus said “my church” see Jesus is the head and we are the body
Ephesians 1:23 says, “And the church is his, meaning Jesus, body…”
Colossians 1:18 says, “Christ is the head of the church…”
See Christ or Jesus is the church. That is what Jesus meant when he told Peter upon this rock I will build “my church.” That Jesus is the head and you are to spread and to build on the teachings that he, Jesus, tought them.
WRONG.
The Bible says that the Church is the body of Christ and that Jesus is the HEAD of that Body (1 Cor. 12, Col. 1:18).

**When Jesus appeared to Saul in Acts 9 - what did he say? He said, “Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?” **
He said, “Who are you, sir?” The reply came, "I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting." The CHURCH has the final authority on earth - NOT the Bible itself. We see this is Matt. 16:15-19, 18-15-18, John 16:12-15, 20:21-23 and 1 Tim. 3:15. In Luke 10:16, Jesus says: **"Whoever listens to you listens to me. Whoever rejects you rejects me. And whoever rejects me rejects the one who sent me." **
John 16:12-15 Jesus is not talking to Apostles he is talking to Disciples. If you keep reading to verse 17 it says, “The Disciples asked eachother…” Not the Apostles. They were still learning which is what a Disciple it and they were not yet teachers is what a Apostle is.

John 20:21-23 Once again you need to read from verse 19 where is says, "That evening. on the first day of the week. the “Disciples” were meeting behind locked doors because they were afraid of the Jewish leaders.
Jesus was giving the Disciples their Spirit-powered and Spirit-guided mission, to preach the Good News about Jesus so peopl’s sins might be forgiven. The Disciples did not have the power to forgive sins [only God can forgive sins} but Jesus gave them the privilege of telling new believers that their sins have been forgiven because they have accepted Jesus’ message. All believers have this same privilege. We can announce forgiveness of sins with certainly when we orselves have found repentance and faith.

Acts 1:20-26 There were many who consistently followed Jesus throughtout his ministry of earth. The 12 Disciples were in his inner circle. but the others shared the Disciples’ deep love for and commitment to Jesus.
The Apostles ahd to choose a replacement for Judas. They outlined specific criteria for making the choice. When the “finalists” had been chosen. the apostles prayed. asking God to guide the selection process.
The Disciples became Apostles. Disciple means follower or learner, and Apostle means messenger or missionaary. These men now had the special assignment of spreading the Good News of Jesus’ death and resurrection.
**Where **do you get your bizarre interpretations?
Jesus gave them the power to forgive sins or hold them bound - on earth AND in heaven. Who are YOU to put words in his mouth and twist what he said?

The disciples didn’t "become Apostles". There were 12 Apostles, plus a few more including Matthias, Paul and Barnabas.

Also - Jesus spoke to the Apostles ALONE in John 16 when he told them the sHoly Spirit would guide the Church to ALL truth about the things that were coming. It was the Last Supper.

Elvis long before the martyr of Gorkum, King Henry or Queen Elizabeth Roman Catholics tortured, murdered those they diagreed with. Long before.
So I guess that makes those murders right?? Really warped logic, pal. I was pointing out the fact that Protestants killed Catholics for the same reasons.
The Roman Cahtolic Church was extrememtly corrupted at the time of the reformation. Church offices were being sold. After the reformation that process stopped. The RCC was actively involved in civil matters crownong princes and kings deposing princes and kings. Is this the work of Gods Church? After the reformation most of this stopped. Before the reformation The RCC charged taxes to civil governments. Is the the wordk of Christ Church is this a practice of the apostles? Again after the reformation this practice stopped. These are just a few.
The Reformation was a God sent against a coruupt, abusive apostate church.
The Reformation was ANYTHING but God sent. It was an Ecclesiatical divorce - and we ALL know from Scripture that God hates divorce (Matt. 19:6).

As for your warped view of history - it wasn’t the Church that condoned the murders of non-believers but the States and Governments and local Church leaders who took it upon themselves to speak for the Church in Rome.

So I guess that makes those murders right?? Really warped logic, pal. I was pointing out the fact that Protestants killed Catholics for the same reasons.
meantime, there was an atheist silently in the background, shaking his head at human lunacy, inventing something 🙂

No. It does not. There are many aspects of this scripture which the Catholic position fails to address. The focus you provided is so bent on the “authority” apriori that you totally miss the “keys.” The average Catholic I have discussed this with has no clue exactly what the Scriptures mean with their use of “keys” in this text. Plus, the claim you make of Jesus speaking “only to the disciples” does not have half the indication which you have appointed to it with your understanding of Catholic dogma.

All scripture is for all people all of the time, as in all ages. Jesus gives all believers the power to confess their sins and to be forgiven directly by Jesus. 1 John 1:9 But this privilege of confessing and being forgiven is not “the keys” spoken of by scripture.
In Matt. 16:15-19. 18:15-18 and John 20:21-23, Jesus gave the apostles the power to forgive sins - PERIOD.
You wan twist it all you want - but that is EXACTLY what he said.

As for the Keys spoken of in Matt. 16:18-19, study Isaiah 22 (v. 22 in particular) - then come back and see if you can intelligently rebut the Catholic position.

As for your erroneous statement:

***"*All scripture is for all people all of the time, as in all ages" - this is about as ignorant as it gets.
Do you mean to tell me that when Jesus spoke about Judas at the Last Supper about dipped his bread in the dish - he was speaking to me in particular?
When Jesus told Peter - “Feed my sheep” in John 21 - he was speaking to you?
These were statements made to individuals about those individuals in particular.

To orginial poster: I have cross posted this as well with your post in scared scripture forum:

You have, in just a few days, gone from I want to leave the CC and become Assembly of God to …I doubt God cares

So, it’s pretty obvious that your problem is really not in the CC, it’s with your faith in God to begin with…you need to work on that and even if it means you go to Assembly of God, throw up your arms, shout and get the Holy Spirit, by all means, do so!

In my prayers,
Dana

:banghead::hypno:Yep, Jesus lied to everyone. He promised the “gates of hell would not prevail” against His Church and then after 50 years or so He let those gates overrun the castle like a horde of orcs and goblins. He permitted His people to go without faith, truth, real evangelization, or catechesis for 1,500 years until, praise God, Martin Luther came along and counteracted the thousands of years of horrible councils, awful morality, terrible lies, and silliness of those apostate Catholics! Shame on them…1500 years of souls en route to hell in perdition’s flames until the Reformation. Yep, that’s a logical thesis?
Christ founded a Church an assembly a congregation. The Roman Catholic element of that Church went wayward, lost its moorings. This element became extremely corrupt, abusive and apostate. Yet you deny the seriousness of that sin and insist that all follow you. This can only be termed foolishness.

This is a tired argument. It’s the old impeccability vs. infallibility yawner. If you expect every individual in the Catholic Church to always, everywhere, and completely to be sinless and impeccable, you indeed do have pie in the sky standards. No one in this forum doubts or doesn’t know about the sins and scandals and foolishness that has taken place in history by individuals within Catholic Christendom. No one need deny or refute them. What’s your point? How does individual scandal an “apostacy” make?

You point out the executions by Catholics in England. Look at the bloodbath during Henry, Edward VI, Elizabeth I’s reign, etc.? There was a river of martyrs’ blood flowing in England that far outshone the executions of “bloody” Mary Tudor?

John Calvin and the gang were pretty adept at murder and execution as were the peasants in Luther’s day in Germany and other groups. I fail to see the point? If you expect scandal and individual sin to disqualify a church’s legitimacy, then every single Protestant denomination is toast. They ALL have no-goodnicks, ruffians, sharks, and grafters. All the Reformation did was create chaos and a mirror-driven self-translation and self-appointed papacy for everyone who joined. It yielded theological meltdown, frivolity, chaos, and the myriad thousands of conflicting denominations we have today in 2009. The Deformation was not a success.

and out of all that religious insanity came the true light … the enlightenment and rational thinking. Finally, we began the long (still not completely realized) journey of unshackling ourselves from bronze age absurdities.

WRONG.

Jesus never lies. Men missinterpret what Jesus says. Just like what the gates of hell mean. No Catholic has been able to explain how the gates of hell will not prevail means that Catholics cannot err in doctrine.

And Christs disciples were commanded to go into all the world and make other disciples in all nations. Disciples who had the authority the mission of the initial disciples.
I don’t believe I questioned that or even brought it up. Now all this Disciple stuff came from elvisman post. He said and I quote, The Disciples didn’t become Apostles there were 12 Apostles plus a few more…then he names 3 of them. I was showing elvisman that they were not Apostles from the beginning. The were Disciples first.

There was a blood bath by Protestants against Catholics there was a blood bath by Catholics against all that disagreed with Catholicism. Christians really acted poorly and it must have grieved God the things done in His name.
No sane person would recommend that a wife stay with her husband if he was physically and emotionally abusive and if He was cheating on her.
The RCC was abusive for centuries. She strayed for the true gospel and took down the word of God from its rightfull place.
Your denial of the seriousness and effects of the sins of the RCC prevent any reconciliation.

I very much want to quit the catholic church and become an
Assembly of God member. Am i doomed for hell?

I don’t fit in with the CC, there is no enthusiasm there.
Only God can answer that question. Still, schism and apostasy are EXTREMELY grave sins. If you believe that the Catholic Church is the True Church founded by Christ yet are still willing to abandon it, then you are either crazy (which might mitigate the full consent required for a grave sin to be mortal) or diabolicial.

If you do not believe the Catholic Church is the True Church founded by Christ, then perhaps you lack the full knowledge required to be guilty of a mortal sin.

In the end, only God can judge your knowledge and consent here.

GO TALK TO A PRIEST IMMEDIATELY!

Let me reiterate:

GO TALK TO A PRIEST IMMEDIATELY!

I would highly recommend you stop reading what people are posting here–already the Protestant vultures are circling overhead waiting for some carrion (and the death may well be your soul if you knowingly and with full consent reject the Catholic Church.

GO TALK TO A PRIEST IMMEDIATELY!

Please go talk to a Priest about this and do it sooner rather than later.

Assembly of God member. Am i doomed for hell?

my suggestion is quit going to church all together for a while. Get some distance from it & reevaluate in a couple months. In fact don’t even dwell on it much. If you’re single use your weekends to become unsingle. If you’re married take your spouse out and enjoy yourself. Zoo’s, museum’s, movies, play’s (I highly recommend a good Broadway production), a road trip, heck a vacation if you can afford it (I’d love to be somewhere warm right now). If you’re a kid then darn it be a kid and don’t worry about religion so much (believe me … it’s not worrying about you until you start earning a paycheck it can feed from).

I promise, you will not regret taking this advise. You can talk to a priest if you want to, but I strongly doubt he’ll have any worthwhile advice (let’s face it, they don’t date women, how much can they really know about life). As far as Assembly of God, man don’t do it. You’re leaping from the frying pan into the fire buddy. From moderate, mostly normal Catholics (who these days are about as observant as I am), to religious freaks (while there might some entertainment value with watching weird people babble out loud, it’s truly a pitiful sight to watch … like an insane asylum must look).

Although you could try going to a weird church like AOG. Go and babble out loud, come back and tell me if you were really being guided along by a mystical force (and it was all involuntary), or you were just babbling out loud because everyone else was. As they say when in Rome (group think can be a terrible thing my friend). Believe me you will just end up babbling out loud because everyone else is, and then wind up feeling more despair because you’re wondering why you didn’t really feel some mystical force compelling you to babble. The thing is, no one else in that church does either, they babble because of peer pressure (hence my description of it … a freak show). Do you really want some dumb red neck pastor telling you that the only way to heaven is to babble out loud? I mean, come on. Then you’re just gonna wind up constantly questioning whether or not you’re gonna get in (because your not sure if your babbling the right way). So you’ll walk around superstitious all the time (always wondering if you’re thinking the right thing, heck you’ll probably try to babble to yourself at nights, who knows).

Remain skeptical my friend, and logic will steer you in the right direction. Don’t be stupified by superstition.
