Will I need the full RCIA course to be confirmed into our beloved Church?

Hello everyone!

I was baptized Catholic, I did my first communion, but I was never confirmed in my teen years. I am wondering a few things:
  • I already feel so close to Jesus and my Mother Mary — I know that Confirmation is one of the Sacraments but is it going to make a big difference in my relationship with them and God?
  • Will I need my baptismal records from France to be confirmed?
  • Will I have to take the entire RCIA course even I have been studying the Catechism of our church and going to mass regularly?
I do plan on speaking to a priest tomorrow!

Where do you live now? You will definitely need your baptismal records.
 
You will need your baptismal record. What happens beyond that depends on the parish and the diocese. Some offer adult confirmation classes for people in your position. Others send confirmation candidates to RCIA. No one here can tell you what your parish does. It’s good that you have a meeting set up so you can ask all your questions.
 
Since RCIA is the bare minimum, you should desire more. Much more. Read the catechism, or at least a compendium of the catechism. Know the whats and the whys.

Far better is to spend time with Jesus Christ right now. Go before the Tabernacle. Make a holy hour weekly. You will be amazed at the illumination and consolation that occur there.

Since you were baptised and received First Holy Communion, you have only to go to Confession to be able to receive Eucharist and be restored to fully participating in the Church’s sacramental life – this is presuming, of course, that you have been away on the one hand and that there is no other issue to address, such as being in a marriage contracted outside the Church.

The arrangements for making up a missed Confirmation in adolescence should not involve, for one who is already Catholic, participation in RCIA. Unfortunately, I see in the United States that there are places with a tendency to use the RCIA sessions in place of a separate program for Catholics needing to remedially resolve an issue such as having missed being confirmed…so one cannot predict what you should expect. In part, it will depend upon the parish’s resources as well as the mind of the Bishop of the diocese.

You will need a current copy of your baptismal certificate. The Church where you were baptized should be able to send you a copy.

As to whether you will need RCIA that is up to your parish priest. Some parishes have separate adult confirmation classes while most parishes will put you in an RCIA class.

When I returned to the church and inquired about confirmation my priest asked me some questions about the faith and said I didn’t need RCIA. He set up a confirmation class for me.

Even though it’s not required you should attend an RCIA anyway. You are way ahead if you are reading the catechism! You may even be able to tell the instructors a thing or two!
