Will most of us go to hell?

We read in the Bible “Whoever is without love does not know God, for God is love” (1 Jn. 4:8 NAB), yet at present do some Catholics believe God can seem very harsh?

Is God a God who condemns humans to hell, whom he created with weaknesses and inclinations, for one grave thought, word or deed?

Is God, loving and accepting of fallen humans?

Is he the father of all of us, Catholics and others?

Is God a God of love and mercy, whose Son has saved us? Did the life, death and resurrection of Jesus save us?

Will he reject us for one mortally sinful act, in spite of a lifetime of service?

Will a Catholic who even once has looked at pornography, had intercourse outside marriage, practiced contraception, or had lustful thoughts, with clear knowledge and full consent, go to hell if he/she died without confessing to a priest?

How does one believe in a good God if he seems so unforgiving?
 
God does not condemn us to Hell. We make our own choice where we will spend eternity by our words, actions, deeds on this earth.

Because He has given us free will, if we choose to reject Him, He gives us our just punishment even tho it is His wish that we be with Him.
 
God is incredibly merciful. I’m convinced of that. With so much sin in the world, it is wonder he hasn’t destroyed planet Earth and started again.
I’ve heard it said that we choose Hell. We send ourselves there. Anyone who has sincere faith and makes a decent effort at being decent, should avoid Hell.
If you asked me a percentage, I’d say as low as 5% of the population go to Hell. But putting a figure on it, seems childish…

When we sin we are turning our back on God. So yes, 1 mortal sin will keep us from the joys of heaven.

It’s impossible to determine the number of people that will be damned. However, some believe about 33% of the Angels rebelled. Likely, humanity will be similar.

Thanks for your reply, but it is difficult to understand.

You point out we have free will.

On one side we have God, who is almighty and wants to save us, on the other
side we are there with our evil inclinations, made by God. Which is more
powerful?

If we choose hell we are. Even the mafia can make us an offer we cannot
refuse, but God cannot. Advertisers can convince us to get brand X, but God
cannot convince us to do the good.

Which is more powerful God’s grace, will, providence, love or the devil
with his guiles and ourselves with our weaknesses? It seems God is often
the weaker.

Do you believe the words of Jesus?

Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easya that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few.

This is even true among Catholics, because he also says:

many are called, but few are chosen.

if we accept God is merciful and some go to hell, then he is weak and
powerless, as he cannot save us, even though he wants to.

This is good and pleasing to God our savior, who wills everyone to be
saved and to come to knowledge of the truth.

It seems most here believe that one mortal sin, not confessed, condemns one to hell for all eternity.
If his is so how can God be considered good, just, loving and/or merciful?

Because an unrepentant attitude is full of pride and arrogance. And that is what sends one to Hell. Choosing yourself, your own POV, your own way, instead of God’s way.
 
There is no way we can know how many of us will go to hell. No way to know even if we ourselves will die with one unrepented mortal sin. That’s why it is important to strive continually, to remove all that tries to get between us and God.

God could force us if he wanted to, but he will not, otherwise our choice would not be free.

In terms of needing confession, ordinarily yes. However, if the person repents, even if his contrition is imperfect I don’t think they would go to hell if they died.

God is not bound by the sacraments but we are.
 
If he is not repentant, quite possibly.

You are either alive or dead. We can hope that those who are dead may find mercy into life.

We live with failings due to sin, such as original sin. We were separated from God, but we can come to Him thankfully.

He is loving, slow to anger, yet sure in justice.

I think whoever wrote the lyrics to Frank Sinatra’s song “I did it my way” needs to repent or go to Hell.
Because it influenced so many people to be proud of choosing their own journey and rejecting God’s way.
So Christians need to sing “I did it God’s way”

God is more powerful, of course. But in His infinite goodness, He gave us free will to choose what we will do for ourselves. He won’t force His will on us.

Do not let Satan make you believe that if God is good, He won’t let you go to Hell. Remember, He will give us our choice even tho it isn’t His choice for us. And we may not realize that we have chosen Hell until our personal moment of judgment when everything we’ve ever said, done, thought is shown to us by Jesus.

Most of us will spend eternity in Hell. That is why we are to pray that as few go there as possible. While we are here on this earth, we have time to amend our lives and turn away from sin. When our final breath is drawn and we are judged, that’s it.

I choose to go to Heaven and make a conscious effort each day to turn away from the sins that prevent me from being there.

Only Sinatra could have pulled off the swagger necessary to give the song its full power. Only he had the moral authority to deliver the line: “The record shows I took the blows and did it my way.”

This only reinforces what I have asserted already.
