Will Obama Destroy Franciscan University of Steubenville?

catholiceducation.org/articles/persecution/pch0288.htm

*"Mr. Obama’s HHS Secretary, Kathleen Sebelius, is trying to force Steubenville to dispense abortion-producing drugs and pay for sterilizations. This is a Roman Catholic institution. Such things are strictly proscribed by the Catholic faith.

Sec. Sebelius may be aware that Catholic institutions are required by faith and fidelity to their mission to uphold these principles. It is an indispensable part of their mission and their reason for being. To force a Catholic institution to violate the consciences of its faculty, students and alumni in this fashion is like forcing a Yeshiva to serve pork to Orthodox Jewish students."*

Personally for what its worth, I’d say the ball is really in the court of the Steubenville, Catholic University Administration. There the ones who really have the final say on how the University is run Morally. The question is if their strong enough to stay above the water or sink to the bottom like Notre Dame University?

If the University decides to uphold its moral mission as it should, it could mean less student enrollment in the future.

I agree with you. Many of these instutitions have chosen money long ago. When they stop teaching the Faith to accomodate the world. I dont know much about Steubenville, but will see where they stand now.

Notre Dame is among the Catholic colleges/universities that are opposed to the narrow terms of the religious exemption and have appealed for the government to rewrite it to include Catholic schools.

So to accuse them of sinking to the bottom is unjust and incorrect on this particular issue.

I don’t think you understand the issue at hand. It has to do with health care and contraception, not student enrollment.

Hello New England [Pries -t]?,

Your thread seems a little ambiguous…be that as it may.

You seem to have a little insider information on Notre Dame University and as such indicate that they are opposed to the narrow terms of religious exemption. Ok good.

However, your next comment seems a little more shielded. It does have to do with health care but, contraception? Healthcare alone implies the body alone.

The cascading effect of policies and laws that affect christianity as a whole and catholicism in specific are hard to ignore. Under the umbrella of Healthcare=health of the body - we are being de-sensitized to the whole human being - body and soul.

So, a life of prayer and a life of the spirit are relegated to myth and superstition in favor of a life of the body and a life of pleasure. Contraception ( as ineffective as it may be) only enables and encourages the person to enjoy the moment without consequences because, the “health care of the body” is always there to sweep up our mistakes.

We must not loose sight of what is going on before our eyes and in our time and daily living - we are at war, a spiritual war. Waged against christians and especially against Catholics - the original christians.

Forgive me father if I mis-read you. But the words of a Pries-t carry a lot of meaning.

Its not “insider information” its all over the internet. I even provided a link to a news article about it.

The issue at hand is that the upcoming changes health care laws require employers to cover contraception without co-pays. The religious exemption to the law does not, by its narrow definition, include Catholic colleges/universities.
Thus Catholic places of education will have to decide whether or not to offer health care and all the issues that will crop up thereafter.

If all catholics used their voting clout correctly none of this would be an issue!

Republicans irritate me - however -never voting for a Democrat ever again regards -

You are assuming a vote matters anymore.

Obama is the antichrist and the fascists are running the country.

Lord have mercy.

The web-ink the OP supplied leaves a lot a gaps in the sensationalistic story line.

Using "Mr. Obama’s HHS Secretary, Kathleen Sebelius, is trying to force Steubenville to dispense abortion-producing drugs and pay for sterilizations. seems to me more as a facade to mislead people reading this story as to the real source of who it is who wants to dispense abortion-producing drugs and pay for sterilizations at the University.

I’m not particularly pointing fingers except to suggest (“maybe”) its more likely certain members of the student faculty themselves. Of course few are likely to see or admit this possibility. And shudder to think that some in the University Administration could possibly be involved. ???

This story predisposes as many questions as it does looking for “true” answers.

Agreed. There are no references in the original article. Its more of a rant than an informative piece.
That’s what I thought, too. I don’t think this qualifies as a news story. There are no details I would expect to find in such a piece. What exactly is Sebellius doing to coerce FUS and why would FUS even pay any attention to her?

I think this is much ado about nothing. Unless there is some impending federal legislation that would force all Catholic universities to provide these things. I am not aware of any, but maybe I’m just not informed. 🤷

Catholic colleges/universities are in an uproar because there is an upcoming legal issue. Pretty soon they will have to pay for contraceptives and certain abortificients in the health care they provide for their employees. Their only hope is the HHS secretary widens the definition of the religious exemption.

There is. This is a short letter posted last Friday on the USCCB’s Facebook page. It outlines the HHS regulations as well as the way this is an attack on Catholic instituations including colleges and universities as well as Catholic hospitals and service agencies.

The students who attend there and participate in activities where they would need those items should foot the bill for the items themselves.

The law is about health care for employees. Students are not employees who receive health insurance from the university.

Although I think another part of the law makes the same requirements for student health services. That may be one of the later implementations, however.

If it (health care is mandated for employees (of the university) I dare say the catholic Institution will be up against it.

After further reading, it would appear that if students buy their health insurance through their college/university such things would have to be provided under the plan. However, how many students get their health care through their school? And if a school failed to offer a student health insurance plan, would it really significantly impact enrollment?

On the other hand, employees might walk away if health insurance isn’t provided…

I don’t think Catholic schools would care all that much about being required to offer health insurance. They almost all do anyways. They’re more upset over the lack of any meaningful religious exemption for services they consider immoral…
