Catholic hospitals could surrender their Catholic identity and become non-Catholic hospitals. That’s what the administration would like. Get the Catholic Church out of the business.
Indeed, that is the end game. Many have yet to acknowledge this, and that message must be conveyed by our bishops as they continue to preach on this subject.
And doesn’t this sound eerily similar to things we read in our history books about 20th century life behind the Iron Curtain?
If one sees the clear disdain and utter contempt for religion in general evidenced by this “Administration”, the choice in November should be clear.
If our Jewish friends recall how he treated the leader of Israel and how he has summarily reversed long-standing commitments made to Israel by every Administration, Democrat and Republican, since the founding of the State, he should receive not a single vote from the Jewish community, either. We also thank Jewish leaders from all over the country who joined our Catholic bishops in solidarity over this issue.
We all must act according to our conscience, and I do know many Catholics who tend to ignore some teachings of the Church both in their personal lives and when it comes to politics. I will confess that until recently, I may have been guilty to some extent as well when it comes to politics. But if this issue does not smack one into reality, I don’t know what will.
What has also convinced me is the swiftness and degree to which our bishops have joined in solidarity against this tyranny. We even have a growing wave of support from fellow Christians, including some denominations that are typically at odds with the Catholic Church. Shouldn’t this be telling us something (several things, perhaps)?
The Lord speaks to us in mysterious ways. As a elder mentor of mine once said, “Sometimes He still needs to hit you upside the head with a 2x4 to get you to listen to what He has been saying all along!” If only he were stil with us today, I’m sure he would equate this current issue to the 2x4.
