I’ve been having recent troubles with my belief in God. The main problem is the little things. Many small doubts undermined my faith, and I’ve been looking to have them resolved. One of them is: wouldn’t wisdom teeth point towards evolution? If God is omniscient, he would know that if He gave people wisdom teeth, thousands of years later, most people would need them removed. What’s even the point of them? It seems that they are an evolutionary by-product. One might argue that thousands of years ago, people didn’t need them removed, but God knows everything. Past, present, and future. He would know that they would become ultimately useless

1). Evolution is a banned topic, so we can’t really address that issue.
  1. There is no reason why God couldn’t use a process like evolution to produce our temporal bodies.

I don’t see a problem believing in God and evolution. The problem of wisdom teeth is only one of many little imperfections inherent in the human body. We can wonder about it, we can study it, but there is no need to let it weaken your faith.

The whole wisdom thing is a little funny though. That is an interesting doubt.

My dentist told me in fact, more and more people are born without their 3rd molars. They tend to have smaller mouths. Never thought much of it.

No kidding, these poor old bodies are riddled with design flaws, failure modes and vulnerabilities that only make sense if there was in fact evolution. Apart from any DNA or fossil data.

sorry if I violated a rule of the forums, I won’t do it again, but I kind of need to know the answer. Christianity and evolution can’t really coexist. The god that used evolution would be cruel and wasteful. Would Jesus really die for the sins of apes? It takes out the idea of original sin. If Adam was an ape and ate from the tree of good and evil, his mind would be less developed and he would have been much more primitive than today’s humans. We wouldn’t be blamed for the actions of a lesser creature. Sorry if this gets me banned but I feel like this is a cop-out answer. I’m I supposed to read the Bible but not take Genesis seriously? Revelations isn’t made to be read literally but that’s because Paul and other Christians had to sort of wrote in code so that the Romans wouldn’t be able to understand them. Christians are becoming timid. They feel threatened by evolution and so try to coexist. Fight for your beliefs! People of the Bible were zealots and revolutionaries! They didn’t lie down and let other walk over then with their opposing beliefs. They fought for what was right. They were peacemakers, but if there was no other way, they fought for the Lord and we’re triumphant in their battles

I once thought the way you did, but really, it seems to work the other way.

If there is no evolution, then God **wanted **us to get scurvy, and skin cancer, and cataracts, wonderful things that other species are protected from.

There is a parasite in Africa that lives **only **in the human eye, which it eats out. If there were no evolution, only a sadistic divinity would create an organism that exists only to blind human beings.

While it is true that apes have no original sin, there was at one point human life, wherever they got their bodies. Original sin began then.

so God caused The Big Bang, waited a million years, then chose two apes and put them in a garden and told them to not eat one kind of fruit?

I don’t deal in that.

Time is only an issue for us because of the pitiful non-duration of our embodiments. It is not an issue to God.

I’m guessing we would lose our teeth quicker any years ago with all the battles, getting hit in the face and a lack of sharp knives for everybody. Wisdom teeth are spare ones for later.

Just because we keep our teeth better now doesn’t mean they are useless.

I had two come out about 17 years ago and they are still going strong.

life forms are very plastic. some people call it evolution but I see it as a plastic response to a changing environment.
the bone in your brow can increase in scale in response to the environment, within your own lifetime. all it is is calcium deposits in an area that needs protection from increasing cold.
These heavy browed ancestors of ours who some people like to think of as primitive were the same as us. Given the right conditions your brows would gather extra calcium and grow heavy within your own lifetime.
As we moved away from eating coarse food to farmed and then processed food and lazy warm comfortable lives, we change. No longer are the heavy molars working as they once were so they fade away. Like astronauts who lose the ability to walk on earth we have to use muscle and bone to keep it operational and if our use of it changes then they change in response to the changing workload.

I do not subscribe to the idea that wisdom teeth or lack of them is any indication of evolution.
Our modern diets are full of processed and unhealthy foods. To accommodate wisdom teeth the jaw has to grow adequately and the dental arch achieve an almost semi circular shape. Many today do not and orthodontia is the only way to correct it.

No. Like anything else. It’s not really just that simple.

The Garden’s a metaphor. It’s talking about a lot of things at once. Because it was a lot easier to pass on a verbal history by using those kind of easy to remember details. Instead of a long list of “facts and figures.” So imagining there was a real situation where a snake scammed mankind out of their heaven with the promise of fruit’s a bit sideways maybe from what probably happened.

I mean if you want details I’ll give you a bunch of probables. But I’m sort of up to the edge of how late I should be up at this point. So to avoid rambling I’ll post it tomorrow.

Peace PonderingJak. Keep Pondering.

I’ve also got to throw in this bit about wisdom teeth. If you grew up with a more carnivorous diet your jaw would be stronger. It’d grow longer. And your wisdom teeth would just slide right in. No problem. So stop eating your veggies. While there’s still time!

Ive wondered about wisdom teeth before as well, it would be interesting to see if people are still having them come in another 100 yrs or so.

Also, we have some other organs and things in our body that we do not use at the current time, especially when it comes to our DNA, if you look at a normal human DNA strand, there are some crazy things in there, but they are essentially ‘turned off’…it is curious to wonder why they are even there to begin with…will they be useful at some point in the future, and an all knowing God knew to include them,or…?

Another one is the Pineal gland, this is a VERY interesting part of our body, I think in the future people will learn how to access it/ turn it on and our potential will be unlimited.

GEddie, if God made the world and started the evolutionary process, then He would have known that the African eye parasite would be a by-product. Otherwise you’re basically saying that He lost control of evolution and accidentally made a creature that eats eyes. Does not everything have a purpose under heaven?

It seems that imperfections in the world follow the logic of Genesis. In Chapter 3, Adam and Eve sin, and from there on, Nature is fallen. People have free will, and so sometimes do evil. The world is not perfect, and yet our hope is in a perfect Heaven through belief in Jesus Christ. Please don’t let an imperfect world keep you from believing.

(As an aside, my understanding is that we can discuss evolution if we are civil about it.)

Mikekle,I thought the pineal gland secreted melatonin which is what keeps us asleep? It supposedly is produced more in darkness.
