Why is our American government just standing by and doing nothing? 😦 We let millions of illegal aliens stay in our great land and yet we seen to have no room for 100,000 living beings that are more likely going to be murdered? I’ll bet those that are old enough to work would be willing to do the jobs that “Americans won’t”. And this 100,000 would be legal.🙂

Are you suggesting we bring them here? Evacuating that many people out of Sri Lanka on short order would be quite a logistical challenge.

Also, I didn’t see any mention of murder in the article. Do you have another source on that?

I believe that the USA could do so if they so desired.

I don’t believe that all the that could be annihilated are going to commit suicide.

Emphasizing “the perilous situation of total annihilation of civilians in the no-fire zone,” he said the “extremely dangerous” situation requires “fast and stern action” to protect the safety of civilians.

time.com/time/world/article/0,8599,1701615,00.htmlFrom the article, it sounded as if the danger was collateral damage from government and rebel military action, as well as exposure to the elements in a shadeless landscape. I didn’t see any indication in the OP’s article that either the government or the rebels were engaged in widespread murder of civilians. The Time link you posted makes no mention of it, either.

As for evacuating 100,000 people to the US, that certainly would be a bold move. However, I don’t think it would be an especially wise one. I’m not aware that anyone has asked for this, and it would cost an awful lot. Probably a lot of the 100,000 would resist forcible expatriation. Until a significant number of refugees integrated into American society, the refugees would lack the social network that would make them feel at home and deter destructive behavior. There would be increased crime in surrounding communities by the refugees. There would probably be an increase in drug use among the newcomers. And refugees would be more vulnerable to criminal activity and deception by ne’er-do-wells already in this country.

More sensible is the bishop’s plan for a ceasefire to allow the civilians in the conflict zone to evacuate over land. There would still be some of the negatives I mentioned above, but adjustment would be much easier for refugees in their own country. More importantly, they could return to their homes much more quickly if the fighting ends soon.

Well now that it has been decided that bringing 100,000 humans caught in the middle of this situation, what will we do?
  1. Sit back and do nothing. “Shrug” it is non of our business.
  2. Write letters to the editor. Telling those we won’t help how PC we are.
  3. Tell the people of Sri Lanka “sorry wish we could help.” But we are toooo involved in other places.
  4. Ask the UN to help out here.
  5. Ask Mrs. Clinton to go talk to them.
  6. Tell them we are pro-choice. Life protection is individually personal and private.
  7. Send peacekeepers ourselves. Volunteers that know they won’t get help from the USA no matter what.
  8. Send troops to enforce peace.
  9. Pray and try to get as many out of the way of the violence as we can.

So what are you doing about it?
In my case I am petitioning the US government to allow those that can be able to enter into the US. I am providing aid for agencies that are working with the Bishop to get help for those that are in need. (same as in Haiti if you must know). If need be my family and I would be proud to sponsor a family. What are you doing?

Since it’s the first I’ve heard about the situation, and since I don’t really know anything about it other than what you’ve posted here, nothing, until I ascertain whether there is anything concrete I can do, other than pray.

Other than trying to make us all feel guilty, why don’t you give us some specific suggestions for things that we, personally, can do, right now?

Since none of my posts till the last one was in answer to you I am sorry that I have made you feel guilty. I did not mean to do so. My original post was as an answer of what the USA could do. The only time I want to make another person feel guilty is when they see us praying in front of a hospital that does abortions and they ignore us instead of join us.

The main reason I know what is going on overseas is that I have neighbors that travel to the region and will share their experiences. Also the Sister of Mary Immaculate have members in the area.

Suggestions are to send letter to everyone that will listen. Send aid to organizations that are in the area. International Catholic Charities is a good place to start. Remember we are our brothers keeper.

Do you have a medical team from your area that goes into the area? If you do them maybe you can ask them what is needed. When the medical aid is sent to Haiti from our area they can also bring school supplies that many of us donate.

I remember back in the early 1990’s with all of the ethnic cleansing (genocide) taking place in Eastern Europe between the Serbs and Bosnians that Bosnian families were brought to the United States by different organizations. I helped pick up some of these families at the airport in my city, had them spend the first fewr days at my home and they were later relocated in homes and paying jobs provided for them so they could be self supporting. Many of these converted to Catholicism because of this. How can something ike this be started again.?

If I remember correctly it was individual parishes that pledged to help one family or more once they came into the area. The USCCB should have information on how this can be done again.
IMHO the reason there has been so little done about those from Asian and African countries is the fact that they are noticeably non-white. I pray that I am wrong. I have noticed that even the new POTUS has not spoken on the issue of asylum from these areas.

It may not seem like much, but if we all would collectively pray that some kind of peaceful resolution will occur which would spare the 100,000…God listens.
Please join me. Heavenly Father, who who created us and knew our name before we were born, protect the people of Sri Lanka from annihilation. We ask all these prayers through Christ our Lord. Amen.
