Woke up with a fever - go to Mass?

Hi all, I had a fever over 100 last night and woke up with it being almost 102 this morning. I decided to stay home from Mass as the Bishop has asked us to do so if we are sick and one of the priests I spoke with said the obligation does not bind if you are sick.

However I took some ibuprofen this mornign when I was planning on going and now my fever is down. There is a 5pm Mass about 45 minutes away this evening, and I wonder if I should go to that if my fever is still down. I’ll probably see the priest who told me the obligation does not bind. I’m pretty scrupulous about all this so I’m not sure what to do if my fever is still down this evening.

This is your judgment call on your health. ARe you contageous? Will this cause your fever to come back? Do you really need sleep to take care of yourself and to let your body heal?

You should look at Mass as something you want to go to, not something you go to out of fear of God’s wrath. Thus imagine if you had tickets to some play event. It cost you a sum of money and you’ve been looking forward to it. Now the day before the game, you got sick and had fever but now its later in the evening, the fever is gone and there is still another showing you can use your ticket with.
 
Remember – when one takes such medicines…the fever goes down but the sickness does not go away…(nor it would seem the potential contagiousness…)
 
In addition to what your Bishop and Priest said --if you wish you may also call your Pastor and ask him to dispense you from the Mass today even if you feel better-- so even if you feel better you will not need to go back and forth about in in your mind even a little bit. Avoid scruples.
 
Also I got around 4 hours of sleep last night so that doesn’t really tell me if I feel better or not. But I am still coughing a bit so I don’t know what to do.
 
I’ve missed Mass several times over the past couple of months cos I was sick as a dog and had a really irritating cough. Given my job the first thing I thought was I have something horrible and contagious. I stayed home. Turned out it was a horrible nasty illness, and was horribly contagious.

I love the Mass. I love God. I was annoyed about being sick.

I saw a poster a few years ago at work that said “Doctor Smith’s cold turned into Mrs Jones pneoumonia”.

You might just have a fever, or a sniffle, but if dear ole 87 year old Mrs. Jones who uses a walker and has two fake hips caught what you had, it could kill her.

If you decide to sleep in or play video games that’s when you’re sinning. Staying away when you’re sick is a responsible thing to do.
 
If you are sick, I assume the right thing to do would be to stay home and not get others sick, that is if you are contagious. I don’t see anything wrong with skipping church once in awhile due to sickness. Its probably best for you to stay home and get better. I wouldn’t worry about it. Youll be back to normal soon again. Feel better

PLEASE STAY HOME IF YOU ARE SICK. Churches are full of the young and elderly, who if they caught your illness, it may be much worse than it was for you.

If you can, watch mass on EWTN, or spend an hour reading the readings and praying.
 
A fever suggests a pretty serious illness (or potenital illness). You need to rest. ibuprofen might lower the fever, but will not in itself fight the intruder; you need good rest and sustenance.

Also, whatever you are carrying may be risky to the health of others, so avoid being around others.

These are two excellent reasons to stay at home. Not only are you not bound by the Sunday obligation, but I would suggest you are bound by a different type of obligation - an obligation to avoid passing on your illness.

Yes, I was just thinking the very same thing! Medications can “mask” a fever, so it’s difficult to tell if one is really better or just temporarily feeling better. I personally stay home if I’ve had a temperature within 48 hours of any event, knowing I need to rest, recoup, and not potentially spread something around!:heaven:

My son stayed home this weekend too. He also had a fever, 102. He tried to tell me that if he took something his fever would come down and he could go. :dts:

It should be very simple. If you are sick, stay home.

Hope you are feeling better.
 
Fever came back pretty bad last night so it’s a good thing I didn’t go. It broke this morning, thank God. Thanks for the well wishes.
 
Rule of thumb in our house, 24 hours without a fever or symptoms of a stomach bug before resuming normal activities including attending mass.
 
Fever’s gone but still have a cough and sniffles, feeling probably 90% energy-wise. Hope I’m better by Thursday so I don’t have to make another gut-wrenching (for me) decision…🤷

Instead of thinking about whether or not YOU miss Mass, think about if you will infect OTHERS. Or if you are coughing disturb others.

The decision might not be so gut-wrenching.
 
Stay home. There are old people and babies there. It’s a good reason and you have no obligation if you are sick.
