Woman arrested in hate-graffiti cases
ANAHEIM – A 53-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of spray-painting hateful graffiti on two Catholic churches and several buildings across Orange County, police said.

Kim Rebar Henry of Fullerton is accused of scrawling the hateful messages and racial slurs that threatened Catholics and ethnic groups including Asians, Mexicans and African Americans, Anaheim police Sgt. Rick Martinez said.

“It appears to be the work of one disturbed individual,” Martinez said.

She should have just stayed in Santa Ana. Or gone to Corona in Riverside County. They paint graffiti on trees there. Even dogs. Once I saw a little bird land near me and it had been tagged.

Nobody would have noticed unless she painted something that indicated she was a member of a gang and might possibly be a rival of the members of another gang. Then she would have been shot.

OK, serious now. This is nothing like what happened to the church where I was baptised, made my first Confession, my First Communion, was Confirmed, and married. The incident was reported on CAF soon after it happened and resulted in a deluge of emails between members of my family. Even my sister, who is not a practicing Catholic and who once was involved in egging the parish school on Halloween, was very offended.

The name of the church is St. Rose of Lima. It’s in Maywood, CA. The damage there was horrendous: a knife was stuck into the “head” of a painting of Our Lady of Guadalupe. One person defecated in the parish hall (which had once been the church). There was a lot of damage done and I firmly believe it was a hate crime.

The current case sounds more like a woman with a mental problem and I pray that she receives the care she needs.

Orange County has a very large Hispanic population. I don’t think many of them, even those in gangs, would vandalize a church (although I may be wrong). Most Hispanics are Catholic and most respect the Church. It’s difficult to explain but vandalizing a Catholic church is similar to smacking your mother across the face. It’s not acceptable.

I’m sorry to hear about the acronym you posted (which I won’t repeat here). I used to think the “n” word is the ugliest word in the English language but now I have to qualify that by saying the “n” word is the ugliest word in the American English language (assuming the acronym refers to English words).

I’d like to make four points:

(1) My laughter was not directed at this woman. It was directed at vandalism and those *gang members *who seem to vandalize everything in sight. That is what happens in Santa Ana, Corona, and many cities in the US and across the world. When I was working for the County of Orange one of my offices was in Santa Ana and I was always amazed at the amount of graffiti and other vandalism that was taking place. One woman, seeing gang members tagging a building, honked her car horn. She was shot by a gang member (fortunately she didn’t die).

Laughter is sometimes a reaction to a horrible situation in which people feel helpless. And I was not laughing at this woman. There is nothing funny about her. Look at where I live - it’s a glass house.

(2) Schizophrenia is indeed a very serious mental disorder. As I already stated, I am praying that she receives the care she needs. I wonder why someone who is obviously not able to take care of herself is not receiving necessary treatment. Unfortunately many mentally ill people are in the same situation.

(3) If you read what I wrote as laughing at this woman I was unsuccessful at getting my points across and I apologize for that. It hurts and angers me when I see what I believe is laughing and mocking other people and it is not behavior that anyone should engage in; particularly not Catholics. We should know that when we laugh at any other human being we are laughing at Jesus. That was not my intent.

(4) The Orange County Register is a terrible newspaper. The name of this woman should not have been printed IMHO; it is an invasion of the privacy of an ill person who needs help. That newspaper is well known for sloppy reporting and editing.

Please accept my apology. I meant no disrespect to the woman; only frustration at gang activity which permeated the town I grew up in and has climaxed in the desecration of the church I attended for over twenty years.

I lived in Anaheim before moving to Corona. You’re right - I said the same thing when the news was reported on CAF about St. Rose of Lima. I said it was a hate crime. I can’t fathom a Hispanic person desecrating a Catholic church. Sticking a knife into the “head” of Our Lady of Guadalupe (a figure which is held in the highest esteem) is tantamount to stabbing one’s own mother with a knife.

I once inspected an apartment which was used by Hispanic gang members. There were quite a few that lived there; they slept in shifts. The few that were home when I was there were wearing crucifixes around their necks and this was long before it became a fad which had nothing to do with the Church.

Which is completely different from the current case. This woman is ill and needs help. I’ve seen so many mentally ill people fall through the cracks and I’m worried about her. We have a responsibility to help people in need, no matter what that need is.

Why did the newspaper have to go and publish her name? That was cruel and unnecessary.

Me, too. PTSD, major depression, panic disorder…I lost count of the number of times I was hospitalized and I’m fighting against being hospitalized now and being left penniless.

Old Medic, I’m not laughing at her.

But I thank you for bringing it up. Too many people laugh at those who are or who have been mentally ill. It’s socially unacceptable. That needs to change.

OCD is a tough one. MAJOR OCD is something I pray I am never inflicted with. You have my sympathy. I remember a young girl during one of my hospitalizations. We shared a room. It was very late and she was tossing and turning and finally she said “OK!!!” and she got up and got dressed. She couldn’t win the fight against the urges that made her feel she absolutely had to do certain things. I wanted to help her so much and I didn’t know how. Later I heard her father ask her why she couldn’t just ignore the urges. I don’t think a person can ignore them.

It’s good to know there is medication available. I believe it’s a chemical/electrical imbalance that causes so much of what is called “mental” illness - some sort of glitch in the brain.

I would bet that a significant number of CAF members have suffered with mental illness, especially depression.

I really hope that poor woman who wrote the “hate” messages gets help. But I wonder how she can ever hold her head up when her name has been plastered across the pages of the major Orange County newspaper. They shouldn’t have printed her name. There was no good reason to do so and I’m tempted to email them and tell them that. In fact, I’m going to do it.
