At least no one died.

Please pray for the injured and that somehow the leg can be re attached to the woman. There was just another report of another face transplant, maybe they can do a maricle and give this woman back her leg.

What a terrible accident. I will pray for all involved.

One thing though…what is with the “another black mark” comment? It makes it sound like the priest did it on purpose. Do you think an auto accident is a black mark against the Church? 🤷

It sounds like, from the news story, that the car malfunctioned. How is that a black mark on the Church?

I agree, I don’t think it’s a black mark on the church at all. Sounds like an accident to me.

I’ve really got to say, as a news article goes it doesn’t seem to be written too well… a lot more detail could have been included, I mean “Thomas says the priest told her the accelerator just went.” Doesn’t sound like very thorough news reporting. Have there been any investigations into the cause? Are any planned? “At least five people have been taken to the hospital.”, which hospital? In a critical condition?

Another article I’ve found explains it a little better (not a lot): “Four others were injured, but Forest Hills Mayor Ray Heller Jr. says their injuries weren’t life-threatening. He says they included a broken leg and a broken arm.”

Sadly, the woman who lost her leg was apparently pronounced dead five hours later… philly.com/philly/wires/ap/news/state/pennsylvania/20090410_ap_womankilledincrashatpittsburghareachurch.html

What a terrible thing to happen, and on Good Friday, too. 😦
Ms. Thomas said she spoke with Father Kacinko at the scene. He and the passengers in his car were not hurt.
“He told me the accelerator of his car went on its own and he could not stop the car,” she said. “He’s just the sweetest priest and a wonderful man. He’s in shock. He’s just devastated.”
Parishioners said Father Kacinko, who is retired from the former St. Francis Parish in Coral, Indiana County, lives in nearby Centurion Commons and has been assisting at St. Maurice for more than 10 years.
Father Skirtich conducted yesterday’s service and said Father Kacinko was in a state of shock and in need of prayers.
“I was with the victims of the accident and we are praying that everyone makes it,” said Father Skirtich, who said he planned to visit the injured in the hospitals later in the evening. "It was a traumatic and frightening scene. We ask prayers for our parish and all of those involved in this horrific accident.

What a horribly misleading title to this thread!

A tragic accident occurs and somehow becomes a black mark against the Catholic church.

That’s as ridiculous as blaming the type of car the priest was driving.

I hope everyone who reads this thread prays most earnestly for the priest who was driving that car. Stop for a moment and think how he could be feeling. And then pray for all those traumatised in this incident.

Ah, that’s a much better news article RedGecko… yeah I think that poor priest would be feeling really awful right about now… he, along with the families of those affected definitely need everyone’s prayers over the Easter period.

Yes, it is a misleading title. Perhaps, using the correct title of the article might be better.

I am so sorry this took place. Prayers are needed.

Father is a kind and gentle man. Fr Kacinko, 79, is retired from the Diocese of Greensburg and has helped at St. Maurice Church for years. He was leaving when his car jumped a curb. Please pray for the woman that died, Madeline Romell, 89, of Forest Hillsand and all those that were injured.

My prayers this Holy Saturday are with the victims of this tragic accident, for the Church community and also for the poor priest who was involved in the accident.

The true title of this article is

Woman Loses Leg When Pennsylvania Priest Runs Over Worshipers After Good Friday Service

The OP changed the title (although it has been changed to the REAL title). Why? I have no idea.

What a sad thing for everyone…Why blame the church? Anyone of us could have been behind the wheel of that car…with the same results…Are we now going to blame the church for everything that ever happens to anyone?

I certainly hope not…We need to stand up for our faith and our clergy unless they have committed a sin or a crime…and it they have we still need to pray for them:shrug:

***The woman whose leg was amputated did die.

I heard that it was an accident, that the accelerator pedal stuck down.

God grant her eternal rest and let perpetual light shine upon her.

May her soul rest in the peace of Christ. Amen.***

It may or may not have been a problem with the accelerator; a lot of the Oh-no-my-accelerator-got-stuck-and-sent-the-car-careening cases actually involve human error, usually by trying to stop the car but not realizing that the driver’s foot is on the accelerator, not the brake.

But, either way, that’s just an accident. Manufacturing defect or human error, it shouldn’t be a “black mark” against the church. Accidents happen; that’s why they’re called “accidents.”

Thank you for this info. I continue to pray for all involved.

Charity is a virtue. It seems to be lacking in some that have posted on this issue.

Another accident where and old driver stepped on the gas instead of the brake. There’s a minimum age for driving, maybe there needs to be a maximum age.

Prayers for the good Father and all the injured.

I don’t think there should be ablanket age limit. It depends on the person and their reaction time and skill…Look at the dumb things people do and drive like testing or using a cell phone…These are most exclusively younger people
