Is nothing sacred?

"A former fundraising coordinator at a northwest side Catholic school was charged today with stealing almost $52,000 that was supposed to lower tuition costs for underprivileged children, authorities said.

Yolanda Kozicz, 41, of Chicago, was charged with theft from a school, following her arrest Tuesday when she showed up to work in a north suburbs, according to a release fron the Cook County state’s attorney’s office. Kozicz was the fundraising coordinator for St. Pascal’s School in Portage Park for seven years, according to prosecutors. The school purchased gift cards from retailers at a reduced rate then resold them in order to raise money for its tuition reduction incentive program.

When Kozicz took over the position, the school had $25,000 in cash and $20,000 worth of gift certificates. Eventually, school board members began to notice that the program was generating less and less profit and Kozicz wasn’t providing financial reports.

She was forced out of her position as coordinator in early 2008, and the Cook County state’s attorney’s office and the Archdiocese of Chicago began a joint investigation into program’s finances. Prosecutors say the investigation uncovered that the account only had $4,300 in cash and $30 worth of gift cards. "

What I know and y’all don’t realize is that the school is the cardinal’s alma mater.

Horrible.

Yes, it seems nothing is sacred in our society anymore except for Political Correctness.

I’ve seen the same thing happen at a public school and at a small non-profit. I have come to believe in annual audits!

Absolutely. Also, this gift card program sounds like a SCRIP program. Many of the participating businesses will likely feel very burned, and not wish to participate anymore.

Where was the BOD? They are responsible for watching the P&L and balance sheets.

I agree, audits are necessary. Oversight of bookkeeping is a must. Contributors need to feel confident that no funny business is going on.

Wow, if you read enough newspapers you might almost conclude that ALL humans are sinful and need a Savior, huh? :o

A few years back a deacon at my kids school (at the time) skipped town with 6 figures of parish money. And this was an impoverished parish too! Now this parish in a poor Hispanic area no longer offers catholic schooling and has tremendous debt.

The Judas factor potentially lies within any of us. Pray for the Grace to not fall that way.
