Because the first question the bishop’s office is probably going to ask is, “Have you talked with Fr. so-and-so?”

I do not question the OP’s sincerity or honesty but the OP may simply have misunderstood what was happening or simply be confused about what actually happened.

Its best to discuss it with the priest first and then if the priest’s answer is not right/satisfactory you can go to the bishop’s office.

I learned last weekend that it is not forbidden to have adult altar servers rather than young males. Maybe this was what you observed?

Really? I’ve only seen adult servers at every parish I have been to except for the FSSP Parish, which has teen and younger servers.
 
I agree with YoungTradCath & Mrs. Sally. We should all try to remember the sacrifices all priests have made and try to honor that in itself due to its origin ~ a calling to serve God. I feel confident those priests who may be misleading the flock do so in ignorance. We should try always to assume the good intentions of another.

No. There is no such thing as a female deacon.

There is often confusion between a “female deacon” and a “deaconess.” They are 2 entirely different things. A deaconess is an ancient office in the Church (and yes, sometimes preserved in some Eastern Churches)…

…a female deacon is an oxymoron, since no female can be ordained a deacon.
 
Well thank you all for your responses.

I do not, however, think I’ll be returning (or doing much else concerning) this particular church in question.

My search continues - I attended, as I had said I would, a Latin Mass this morning. It was not, as I had thought, the Tridentine Mass - that will be next weeks project.

But for now, I think I’m going to leave things be in re: the church I mentioned in the OP and focus more on my own quest for a place I can regularly attend comfortably.
 
I enjoyed it very much. As I said, it wasn’t the Tridentine Mass, but I still found it rich, and just as good as that, largely understandable.

Not going to end my search here though, going to try out at least a couple more churches.
 
I’m assuming you go to Wayne State. Maybe you wandered into the parish just southwest of the university? If so, I wouldn’t go there again.

Have you tried Sweetest Heart of Mary or St. Josaphat? I’ve never gone but heard good things about them…I pass by them frequently since I’m often downtown.

The Eastern Churches have deaconess, which are NOT female deacons. It is a title generally given to what would be the Mother Superior of a convent that assists with the poor.

I have already been corrected, as I said in my post I was not sure, obviously the source I read was poorly worded.

I must admit to being nosy about these things, so I got on Google Maps to try locating the problem parish. No success yet, though it looks like you are very close to a number of great parishes. I remember when I had to do my search for a college parish, and I wish that I had had such great options out in Stockton, CA!

I would recommend you take advantage of another great opportunity you have: it appears Wayne State is rather close to Immaculate Conception Ukrainian Catholic Church. If you have not yet had the opportunity to attend a Byzantine Divine Liturgy I suggest you put a visit to that church on your to-do list ASAP!

These women processed with the priest, sprinkled the water over the congregation, and assisted with the elevation (though not the blessing) of the extra chalices.

My first thought would have been a fairly blatant liturgical abuse, but I defer to some of the more knowledgeable Catholics here.

side note - tomorrow will be my first experience in-person with the latin tridentine mass. Jumping from one extreme to the other…

Your first thought would be correct…if the women were wearing stoles, which are vestments proper to clergy, that is a serious abuse.

and should be made known to the bishop, and if no action taken, to Rome. It’s your duty as a catholic.
