What’s really interesting to me is that so many of the television writers are MEN, not women. Watch the credits roll next show you watch.

I guess they know what will sell.

Frankly, I think a lot of men find a strong woman very erotic. So in a way, it’s reverse bigotry–the writers are trying to appeal to women by presenting a strong female character, and at the same time, make this strong female character appeal to men.

Nothing wrong with a strong woman. I am one…and most every woman in my family is one…but to be strong, doesn’t mean to demean another, or be violent. My thinking is…if women would feel degraded by such treatment, and we would…men most certainly do, too.

Interesting though about the credits…I will need to pay closer attention next time (if I dare sit through an entire episode of Alias) lol

And the other thing to add to this is…why if a woman is being strong, she is considered the ‘b’ word…but if a man is showing strength–oh well, he’s just a guy. That is another mindset that desperately needs to change. It’s like if a woman yells in an argument, she is seen as ‘having that time of the month.’ If a man yells…oh well, he’s just a man…

That bugs me, and yes, my husband has said that. He doesn’t as much anymore…He knows now that he can be at fault at other times of the month.

I thought that Alice from the honey mooners was a tough woman. There were dumb housewives but there were also smart women too. The mothers on Father Knows Best and Leave It to Beaver were not dumb.

You must not watch a lot of horror movies. Let me forewarn you, I am a horror movie nut. It is almost cliche’ in horror movies that a strong female will outwit the monster/killer and live. My girlfriend and I often laugh that we would like to shake up the horror movie formula and let the guy get the best of the monster/killer.

I have a hard time with the women fighting men bit too. For me, there’s something pseudo-sexual about it that I’d rather not get into.

It especially became too much when on the WWE (yes, that was one of my guilty pleasures) they had women wrestling men (and not necessarily The Wrestler Formerly Known As Chyna). That was just too weird.

Ok when Rambo was running through the woods he was a mess, the terminator is half ripped up.

Now when a woman is tough shes also dressed in tight clothing, hair just perfect, overly mean, her nails are done, shes very smart, gets her other non super hero stuff done, cooks, cleans, takes care of the kids,

This is nothing new at all. This has been going on for at least two decades and it will not stop.

Tear down the men and you tear down the family. Tear down the family and you can open things up to any legal configuration desired.

Just last night I was watching a re-run of a classic Andy Griffith episode. It shocked me to see how strong, faithful, smart and loving Andy was portrayed as Opie’s father (its been a while since I last saw one of those shows). The portrayal of men as strong, loving, smart, faithful, vibrant, caring, and yet principled and honest, is something that has been very long lost in this culture.

Tear down men, you tear down the family.

interesting thoughts, anthony–and i think much of what you say is (unfortunately) true. I don’t think men need to be domineering in order to stake their claim as ‘men of their domain,’ but it just seems to me that the media/tv cannot seem to find a happy balance between men being men…and women being women. It’s like women want to be controlling, naggers…and the men are just cowering down, accepting it. I will admit…I can yell with the best of 'em, but I always try my best to make my husband feel like the man he rightfully is. I don’t want to be the man of my home, in other words.

But, the culture wants women to be the men.

I think this is just a variation on the fantasy that one person can get revenge against a more powerful force. Just think of some of the old movies. Charles Bronson’s “Death Wish” movies were about one man taking on street crime. The first “Rambo” movie was a fantasy about one man taking on a whole town. Shane was about one man taking on a powerful gang of crooks.

This is another variation. I suppose the fantasy is a woman who feels overpowered by an oppressive man wins out in the end.

These movies provide a thrill.

The thing to keep in mind is that men and women were generally portrayed as intelligent people and partners on television in the 1960s. By casting men as the enemy (which I blame on the National Organization of Women), you create ill will between men and women in real life.

The other side wants to tear down the family and portray women as men (I am woman, hear me roar - Helen Reddie song). This is wrong.

The Bible teaches: Husbands honor your wives, wives honor your husbands. That’s the message that needs to be spread.

The television is no longer a welcome guest in my home. Turn it off and deal with your spouse in a calm, respectable manner and tell him or her that you love them.

HELEN REDDY?!? You can’t get anything more current than that? That song is 35 years old! Most people who listen to pop music today wouldn’t even know who Helen Reddy is. Maybe I’m out of line here, but I really don’t think Helen Reddy will be the cause of the destruction of our civilization.

I would love it if my daughter grew up listening to these lyrics. “I am strong. I am invincible! I am woman!” rather than the lyrics that suggest that women are to be objectified by men.

Your post reminds me of Rodney King’s famous quote, “Can’t we all just get along?”

As long as it can be shown that men make more money than women, that men get more opportunities than women, and that men are more likely to be promoted than women, then I suspect we men will continue to be seen as “the enemy”. When the speaker of the House of Representatives gets less respect because she is a woman, you can see where there would be resentment. When the code word for attacking prominent women is “shrill” or “emotional”, you can understand why women get angry.

The National Organization of Women started the “men are the oppressors” mind set. Yes, the Helen Reddy song was contemporary with promoting that horrible, divisive message in the 1970s. Instead of promoting cooperation, understanding and reconciliation between men and women, the message was “Women, throw off the chains of your oppression!!” You are victims!! Embrace your victimhood!

This is against the teachings of the Bible. Today. Instead of building up, feminism was about tearing down.

30 years later, women are still making less than men. Do you know what the National Organization of Women’s position is on prostitution and pornography, they have a “no position” position. Why aren’t they protesting against teenage girls dancing in strip clubs? And taking illegal drugs and engaging in acts of prostitution? The National Organization of Women is a Secular organization, a Humanist organization.

My brothers and sisters in Christ, rely on God, rely on the Church, put your faith to work. Don’t let the Secular World’s easy answers: no-fault divorce, abortion and adultery, be the answer. If you act just like non-Christian people, how are you the salt of the earth? How are you keeping the Commandments?

No… Oppressive men started the “men are oppressors” mindset. I have many smart, talented, accomplished and educated women in my family. I have seen them being discriminated against because of their lack of a certain fleshy appendage. It’s a real phenomenon. You stated it yourself-- women are still making less than men. Nobody invented the idea that men were getting a better deal than women. If you wiped NOW (and Helen Reddy) off the map, you will still have resentment, and it would come out in some other way. The only way to resolve the problem is to address the inequality.
