I’ve been reading the thread Men - how do you feel about your wife seeing a male physician?
But I’m curious about the reverse situation. To avoid hijacking the other thread I’ll start a new one.

So I’m asking the women, is it an issue if your husband sees a female physician?

I didn’t make a poll, just looking for any comments. I’m guessing this is not an issue for the women, but maybe it is.

Not a problem here. My only concern is that she look after him properly to keep him around as long as possible.
😃

I wouldn’t care, but I also know he wouldn’t do it. He would be much more comfortable discussing guy issues with another man.

I don’t think I would mind (I better not, I’m going to be a nurse, so I’m going to have to be able to look at naked guys in a NON sexual way to take care of them), but, as a PP said, I would be worried that he wouldn’t open up enough to a lady doctor for her to treat him properly.

I guess I should add we’ve all had the same female family doctor for 15 years and my husband has no problem discussing anything with her.

Mine has a problem discussing anything with any doctor unless it involves immediate control of hemorrhage or CPR. 😃

I’ve just acted as intermediary with our family doctor, telling her “I know you can’t discuss DH with me, but I think you should know that the scan results you called him about are not significantly different from 15 years ago when he had the first scan. He seems to have forgotten that.” She thanked me.

DH is a doctor’s nightmare: a non-compliant, obese & hypertensive diabetic who refuses to accept what this disease can do and refuses to follow a diet or exercise and won’t follow the strict medication protocol. Oh, he takes it but not in the regimented fashion that is required.

I’m surprised that any doctor will keep him as a patient.

Awww, Phemie, I’ll pray for your husband!

Yeah, not married but I won’t care. I don’t have my own doctor yet (family doctor back home, but I won’t be back home. I’m making my place in DC more permanent) but if I find a good doctor and he’s a man, I’ll keep him. Likewise, if my future husband finds a good doctor and she’s a woman, I’ll tell him to stick with her.

I usually seek out a female physician. In general, they tend to be better listeners. When you walk in with several things that you want to tell the doctor, the men tend to interrupt after the first item and try to solve that problem. The female doctors tend to listen for several minutes and ask related questions. They get the bigger picture before moving into problem solving. It is hard to judge a doctors diagnostic skills, but I can judge there patient interaction skill.

My internist and my urologist are both female. I have no problem discussing anything with them. It was my previous male doctor that was obviously uncomfortable discussing ED issues.

I know some men are uncomfortable with the thought that the physical exam could cause an erection. According to articles I’ve read it does happen but the fear is much greater than the reality. It hasn’t happened to me during an exam since I was 13. But if it were to happen, I’d rather it be at the hands of a female doctor.

I am not married but I will still say:

It wouldn’t disturb me, why should it???

A doctor sees a man or woman as a piece of biology. Thats it. I have worked with mentally retarded people that sometimes would take off their pants in mid-street… Rather embarrasing I might add. However, why would I not take care of the men there just because I am a woman?
Sexuality and body in the area of caretaking and nursing are two distinct things. People just doing their necessary job and these people often have a balanced picture of the human body and are amazed at it…
I would see a man or woman who has a problem with their husband or wife having a physician of the opposite gender to be rather immature and unreflected, which is also a common trait for people that thinks everything in the world has to do with sex.

You’ve almost described MY husband … obese, post-heart attack (and has actually gained weight since said heart attack which was suffered at the age of 46), hypertensive, chronic renal insufficiency (and mind you, he only has one due to having donated one to a brother back when my husband was an 18yo), anemic, sleep apnea, sky high triglycerides & cholesterol, borderline diabetic, and I probably forgot a diagnosis or 2 … and he will not follow any diet or exercise plan, plays around with taking his meds (as in skipping days of the BP meds, leaving that nitro on the desk when he’s at work …)

Yeah, I’d take ANY dr that would actually get through to him that unless he changes his ways, he might not see any of his children graduate high school. And the oldest is currently a sophomore.

If the doctor had three heads and was purple with pink polks dots I wouldn’t care a whit–as least my husband would be going to a doctor! He refuses to do so now…🤷

My doctor is a woman, and my wife couldn’t care less. I don’t see it as an issue, just like the other thread.

You make some good points. I think some men would do better with a women doc, both in terms of actually going in regularly, and in discussing their medical issues.

My doc is a man, but I only went to him because he’d been my wife’s physician. I didn’t have a personal physician for years. But once I went to the ER and everyone kept asking me for the name of my physician. I didn’t have one. So I decided to pick one I’d at least heard of.

Excellent point. This is probably one of the best things I like about my doctor. She has never rushed any of my visits. The last time I went, I think she spent about 30 or 45 minutes with me, and never glanced at her watch, or hurried through our conversation.

Not a problem in the world. I would be perfectly ok with my husband seeing a female doctor.

My step dad is in the midst of recovering from surgery to remove intestinal cancer. His surgeon was a woman. Every medical professional he has met through this ordeal has told him that they wouldn’t want anyone else operating on them, that she is brilliant, and very well liked. He and my mother have been nothing but happy and impressed with her. I would imagine he had to take his clothes off at some point for an examination with her, and was GASP!!! naked during surgery with her in the room!!! She is a professional, and highly recommended. Why in the world go anywhere else?

I can answer this for Miss Bonnie. We both see the same [female] doctor, and she has no issues at all with my seeing her.
