Original article:

At least two Anglican women priests have become Roman Catholics because they are “fed up with being treated like dirt in their own Church,” according to Fr Michael Seed, the Franciscan friar who is ecumenical adviser to Cardinal Murphy-O’Connor.

Christina Rees (centre) argues in favour of women bishops

Fr Seed a deeply inspiring priest who has received many Anglicans into communion with Rome reveals this extraordinary detail in an interview with the Independent, which has buried it away in a feature. He received two women himself and has now told the Catholic Herald that other female priests have come over to Rome as a result of “persecution”.

In the forthcoming issue of the Herald, Fr Seed tells my colleague Simon Caldwell: “There are other Catholic priests who have dealt with cases like this. Anglican women priests are generally upset at the way they are being treated Â… This is hardly the Third Secret of Fatima. The persecution of women priests is well known among Anglican clergy, bishops and laity.”

Interestingly, many women clergy in the Church of England would agree with Fr Seed, even if they are not tempted to take the radical step of becoming Catholic laywomen.

Christina Rees of Women and the Church says: “Every woman who is ordained as a priest in the Church of England knows in one sense there is still a question mark hanging over her orders in a way which does not hang over the order of her male colleagues.”

Catholics, incidentally, would disagree with this last claim. There is no question mark hanging over the orders of any Anglican priest at least, not according to Pope Leo XIII.Â

I had to rename the title more appropriately.

Ok, it’s the Lords sacrifice, it’s through the Lord “him” self that’s there, and only through the Lord himself that’s going to be there, regardless of vessel. Yet, let’s at least make it a “male” one, otherwise the whole intercession gets lost.

I feel these women will face the same thing on the Catholic side as well, ladies you are just exactly perfect in every way, but this happens to be a role only a man can do, just as it’s a role only for you women to give birth, it’s just a given and it’s expected not to slur that boundary. I do have to add, these very devout women deserve many, many of our prayers and respect., Those of this kind are to be highly respected and looked up to within our faith, we very much benefit from women of great faith, regardless of title, earned or not through the channels.

I humbly and gratefully, warmly welcome these wonderful people to participate in full with our faith!!!

Prodigalson - I don’t know if it’s you or me who is reading the article incorrectly, but I don’t think it mentioned anything about them becoming Catholic priests. Damian Thompson (whose blog is great, by the way) himself says:

(my emphasis).

I’m always happy, of course, to see anyone join the Catholic faith out of sincere conviction.

However, if these women are ordained clergy in the Anglican church and they are leaving because they feel they aren’t being treated as equals with male clergy… why, then, would they join a church in which women can’t be ordained clergy at all?

Are they joining a liberal parish or diocese in which they have been led to believe that the Catholic Church will eventually “have to” ordain women, or are they joining a schismatic sect that claims to be Catholic and ordains women?

the thread title seems to keep changing so I am not sure of the question. If it is supposed to be “women who formerly were Anglican priests coming into the Catholic Church” which I thought was OP’s topic, the title should say that. On this forum the thread title should be the title of the news article. It is also unclear from OP’s information if these women somehow feel there is a chance they may someday be invited to become Catholic priests, otherwise whoever has mislead them is facing just punishment in eternity.

this is the title of the blog entery
Women priests become Catholics
I thought for this forum it had to be a legitimate news story not a blog

If it is in general a thread about women priests, then the news link and title should reflect that. Women cannot be priests in the Catholic Church. that is unbroken teaching from Christ and the apostles. What is there to discuss?

The article just seems to quit rather than finish. Readers should know that what is meant by the last line is that neither male nor female Anglican priests are recognized as having the sacrament of Holy Orders by the Catholic Church and the ruling is laid out in detail by Pope Leo in the encyclical Apostolicae Curae (spelling from memory, probably wrong!).

So by definition, any Anglican priest who becomes catholic understands that he/she is becoming a catholic lay person.

I think it’s great, especially if these women choose to excercise healthy spiritual leadership within catholicism. Contrary to the beliefs of some, women are enthusiastically invited to leadership positions in the catholic Church. Go to nearly any parish or diocesan office and you’ll find that MOST offices are headed by women. Holy Orders is limited to men, but that doesn’t exclude women from a WIDE range of leadership positions.

I hope that is the case but the blog (still no news article) gives no indication that these particular women understand the matter in this light, or in fact, what their reasons and intentions are.

It’s a blog in a newspaper, the writer making it clear it was buried in a paper. I just noticed the link to the buried article is not allowing access to it.

I certainly don’t wish to post againt a rule. My understanding was murky, as this blog is not just an independent one, but one connected to a newspaper.

I’ll try to find this in other media, but I think it’s been out already now.

Secret Square, I just wanted you to know that I read your post and it’s by far the most sensible one. Great questions.
