My girlfriend and I have “proposed” to each other a lot -mostly on my part- all of which have gone successfully.

But when the time comes to be for-real, I will be the one proposing.

The only surprise will be how I do it; the fact of my asking will be far from a surprise. 🙂
👍

I’m hoping for this myself, when my boyfriend proposes.

(And he’s a member here - this is where I met him, actually - so, if he’s reading this…well, he already knows what I think, so he’s probably not surprised, lol.) 😃

As much as I’m a non-traditional, never-imagined-my-wedding, non-frilly, hate-the-thought-of-wedding-planning sort of girl…I also have no desire to do the proposing. I think that’s his job.

But, different things work for different people…so… 🤷

Only if she was very rich!

I’m only kidding… Of course a woman can propose to a man! This is 2011! Now you might come across a timid man, if he is a traditionalist, he might get nervous, because you could be labeled a “fast” woman, but most modern men would be flattered. Hopefully, they would be “mature” enough to give a straight answer. The more mature the man, the more you will get a straight answer from a calm individual.

Im done. Too much estrogen here. Not looking for a fight.
You have a point though.

Based on the teachings of the ancient Israelis (which Christianity came from) a woman was the property of her father (at least until she married). He could even sell her into slavery.

Within that context, it makes perfect sense that a man would ask a father for permission to marry his daughter. You could even argue that the father’s permission is far more important than the daughters consent.

Ask you? As in for your permission?

Your daughters are not your property - your permission is not required for their marriage. Nor would a real man ask for it unless, as has been pointed out, they are under legal age where parental permission is reuqired or something.

I can’t think of a bigger guarantee of unhappiness for your daughters than for them to marry men who think that women are the ‘property’ of father, husband or any man, and thinking that feel they have to ask Daddy’s permission.

Well, a woman should be strong enough to be able to stand up to her own mother in law, don’t you think? Why should it be acceptable for HER to quietly melt into a corner and be dependent on hubby to do things like handle MIL?

I like the sermon at the Royal Wedding where the point was made that we cannot be too dependent on other fallible humans to make our happiness for us. And by relying on your husband to do difficult and unpleasant things for you, that is exactly the trap a woman is falling into.

Toy poodle, pitbull or golden retriever, a dog is a dog is a dog and I don’t want any dogs of any description, thank you!
You are wrong, a daughter or son should have their parents permission when they marry. This does NOT make someone, someone else’s property and the fact that you believe that is a flaw in your judgement. When I married my wife, the priest specifically asked me if our parents were accepting of our marriage. A marriage is not only between two people but also between families. We should consider our parent’s opinion on this matter as we are called to obey our parents, even in old age, we must always show the proper respect for them. This doesn’t mean we must always do what they say if something is immoral but keeping peace in the family is important. If our parents are so adamantly opposed to a marriage, we should seriously consider why and whether or not that is something we should continue. Marriage is not something that needs to be and it is also not something that needs to be with a specific person. We must be careful with the choices we make, especially when choosing a husband or wife and should consider what our parents feel about it. Many people often make mistakes when it comes to love and what they think is love.

If this was a valid Christian viewpoint Id be an angry athiest too!

Fortunately we have educated modern Christians and a Church that can think beyond what you say. Im not sure what point you think I have but I am pretty sure you missed it.

Here in Britain there is a tradition that a woman can propose on February 29th. A few years ago, my wife had been planning for a while to propose to me on that date (unknown to me), but as it happened I asked her the previous December so she didn’t have to.
