I think that was brought up at some point in this thread actually. I didn’t touch on it because I thought you already knew the answer
In what will make me unpopular in some traditionalist circles; you shouldn’t. Just because someone’s got junk in their trunk doesn’t make you inherently submissive to them.
When a man and a woman become one flesh, they work together as one. In some cases the mind gives way to the heart, in other cases the heart gives way to the mind. Who takes on the role of the heart or head depends on the personalities and the situation involved.
My wife and I are equal partners. There are times she freely tells me what to do, and times that she clearly gives me specific instructions. There are also some times where she point blank will say “do this now”. From the beginning we wanted our marriage to be one where we both had active roles, both of us were leaders. Sure, some roles are different (she is much more careful than I am, maternal instincts, nurturing, misc etc), but at the end of the day she doesn’t submit just because I’m a dude.
All of that said, my wife used to be Protestant. There has been at least twice where she has said “I disagree with this, but you’re the spiritual head so we’ll go with you on this”. These were both incredibly tough and serious issues, which had potential to have serious impact on our marriage. This is a common thought among some non-doniminational types, and I used to find this incredibly awkward. To me, it seemed like a backwards step with the dynamics our marriage usually has. But then I realized that my wife was doing this because she needed me to take on a leadership role for that specific instance, not because I was a male but because she inherently needed someone to take the point, someone to provide direction.
It’s a common joke I heard that “the man is the head, and the woman is the neck which tells the man where to look”. I find that expression demeaning and grossly inaccurate. My comments about the head and heart remain, as does my stance that the man and the woman exchange those roles depending on the situation.
As far as among friends, usual social conventions apply. Cholerics will do what chloerics do for example; people with that personality type (man or woman) will likely take on a leadership/authority role within a group of friends. This has nothing to do with gender, and more to do with personalities.
