I put Catholic women who dress modestly on pedestals.

But, surely, there must be a better alternative than jumpers! Can’t women dress modestly without looking like they just got back from the little house on the prairie?

Are jumpers the defacto uniform of traditional Catholic women? Are modesty and stylishness mutually exclusive?

Have you looked in the stores at the clothing that is available for purchase? see through, peekaboo, slit to the (well you get the idea),

So in defense of jumpers.
  1. they are easy to work in
  2. they are comfortable
  3. they go from home to shopping
  4. they keep my blouse tucked in when playing with the kids
Besides what is wrong with the “Little House on the Prairie” look?

I absolutely believe there is modesty outside the jumper. I think that I dress modestly, and I don’t own a single one. Trousers that fit properly (not too tight), skirts that are full and to the knee or longer (and there are SOOO many pretty feminine choices right now!!), blouses that don’t show cleavage or belly, and are not too tight. And I shop where everyone else shops, no special places needed. All it takes is a little imagination, trying things on to ensure they fit properly, and not falling victim to trends. Oh - and proper undergarments to ensure everything stays where it’s supposed to. :o

Modesty does not have to mean a jumper - there are so many alternatives available. Personally, I don’t particularly like the Little House look. It might be practical, but I still like to look good. Being modest does not mean that you can’t look nice, put together, and stylish.

nay. women should be wearing dresses or skirts that go below the mid calf. and also, women should have their head covered, and sleeves down to the elbow and high necklines.

I prefer dresses or skirts of a long length but I think there is nothing wrong with short sleeves its hot out there today like 90 degrees and long sleeves would be way too hot!

I like longer skirt lengths because I look better in them and they are more comfortable. Mostly, though, I wear jeans. They are comfortable and fit properly so they are modest.

A link that I have found nice stuff on is www.tznius.com.

I dunno, I try really hard to dress modestly but blouses that aren’t missing the top button are really hard to find (maybe because I look in the Juniors section?) I have a bunch of long skirts but even they have low waistlines so I’m always pulling my T-shirt down… so jumpers might not be bad, at least you know your middle is always covered! Personally what I think is ideal for everyday modest clothing are casual dresses old school cut–I only have one–it’s rayon, ankle length, short-sleeves, adjustable tie back, flowing skirt & quiet print. Bought it at a thrift store–they don’t seem to sell them in department stores any more.

There are way more choices than ugly jumpers. And it bothers me that really traditional Catholic mothers seem to go out of their way to make themselves look dowdy. God made women beautiful and they should honor that. When women equate virtuousness with looking really dowdy, that causes young women to reject the whole package.

Yes, I’ve been vehement on other posts about the young girls going to the other extreme. But there is a middle road. I’ve always managed to find skirts that go to my knees at least, capri pants, long enough shirts, flowing dresses. I wear earrings and makeup and do my hair. I believe if I look attractive (not sexy) that I can maybe attract people to what I have to say about God. Face it, people in our society have more credibility if they look good when they say something. Just an indictment of our society.

No one has EVER accused me of looking immodest. The younger generation wants to look nice. If we only hold out to them that to go to heaven we have to dress like the Amish, for all intents and purposes, they’re going to throw the baby out with the bath water. In this case, the baby is the Infant Jesus.

It’s been a pet peeve with me for years that some seem to equate following God with looking like hell.

Happy medium, people! 😉

Maybe several centuries ago…or in modern-day Saudi Arabia or Iran, perhaps…

If they dress as you describe in church, that is fine, but outside…I don’t expect them to go way out of their way just because a man might be tempted to look at them lustfully. Women should cherish their bodies and avoid dressing in ways that encourage men to objectify them, but men can control themselves. If you fall whenever you see a woman’s wrist, you probably need to be in counseling for sexual addiction.

Here here! Jumpers are one of the easier items of clothing to find/fit/wash, especially if you need to wear extra items underneath it or have a problem with sweating. Let women who wear them be.

What do you think of nuns? Too Muslim and old-fashioned?
Nuns are a special case. They have dedicated their lives to God, are brides of Christ, and set aside for HIs purposes in a way that the average woman, single or married, is not.

The “habit” of Mommydom is NOT the jumper!!!

I think jumpers look fine on pregnant women and the newly post-partum. Other than that, I think they’re one of the most unattractive clothing items around. They rarely flatter.

My husband and son have labeled the “modest look” that so many traditional Catholics (and fundamentalist protestants) adopt as the “Desperate Mormon Housewives” look. If you’ve ever lived near a large community of fundamental Mormons, you’ll know what I mean. 😛

I really struggle with trying to find my fashion image that reflects my various roles. When I retired I got rid of what my kids called my lady librarian dresses–polyester knits or rayon challis, in prints, variations of the basic shirtdress design, low heel shoes to match (and panty-hose, which I refuse to wear anymore on principle, for the same reason DH no longer wears a tie).

So I adopted the basic Winter Texan uniform of T-shirt and shorts with white tennies (we mostly have white hair so they call us Q-tips). Now I could go to the northern version of this look, the warm-up suit in various pastel colors, preferably with cute silk-screen pictures of birds and kittens (vary with holiday theme logos of course) but I don’t wear earrings and this look really needs matching earrings to carry it off well.

When I went back to work, for the church no less, I had to find something modest but hot-weather and working-with-kids friendly. For me that is just a chambray jumper over the shorts-T. A variation is the cotton knit print dress over shorts and tank, a tad dressier for Sunday. There is not a heck of a lot to choose from for heavier ladies. I can go with the synthetics, which are torture to wear in our weather, but most of the “professional clothes” sold here are the kind that only work with big hair and lots of jewelry. Or I could shop at fat lady stores, which carry larger sizes of todays fashions, which on us invariably look like maternity clothes. For me the short-sleeve cotton knit dress in below-knee lengths over shorts or capris works best, and still works with low heel shoes that accomodate orthotics. I had some cotton gauzy dresses, lined and unlined, but they still need slips which defeats the purpose of coolness.

Please. God made women beautiful for a reason. I am not saying to dress like a street walker, but, as someone else said, there is a middle road. Believe it or not, not every women in a short sleave shirt is trying to incite lust.

Huh? I didn’t know that nuns (besides Mother Angelica’s) still wear habits. I can’t remember the last time I saw one in a habit.

I thought lapel pins were the defacto post-Vatican II uniform. And Moe Howard haircuts complete the look.

no, that is true. but women should dress modestly especially in Church because it shows respect for our Lord.
