Hallo, my name is Peirs and I’ve started this thread for a simple reason. I am a Highschool student and as a requirement to write a Rhetorical research paper for my AP Literature class i have to survey at least twenty five people. I decided that since my topic, which is Should the Catholic Church allow the Ordination of Women, that it was best that i found mostly Catholics to survey, though anyone is more then welcome to fill out the survey. it’s not ment to offend people in any way, it’s just a simple questionnaire, and i hope that a few of you can find it in your hearts to take a few minutes out of your time to answer this simple survey.

Additionally, in all honesty, I need to note that – to my shame now – I loudly advocated women’s ordination at my junior high school (Catholic) and didn’t fully come-around to the Church’s position until about college, thanks to the pro-life movement.

I think many women who advocate women’s ordination feel a call from Our Lord to something else, maybe even religious life, and “misdirect” it to the priesthood. (That was true for me.) The Church has spoken clearly on this matter, however, and it is for our good and Hers that we obey. If we will not, the “medicine” of excommunication is well-applied. We ladies need to find what God is **really **calling us to and follow! 🙂

For the record, weren’t Deaconesses never officially ordained? They were commissioned, but not ordained, right?
but, unfortunately, most people seem to just want to end the conversation immediately by yelling “shut up” (aka. “the Vatican said so.”) Not helpful. Not convincing.

I’ll assume you’re protestant - that IS a valid argument in Catholicism. This is no democracy, it’s a monarchy. Roma locuta est, causa finita est. Rome has spoken, the matter is finished. Regardless of however they come up with doctrine in your community, in the Catholic Church, if The Vatican issues a binding doctrinal statement on something, that’s the end of the matter. There is no debate.

The ancient formula from the Apostolic Constitutions has them (and subdeacons) ordained by the laying on of hands by the episkopos.

Later versions include the notation that they, like deacons (and unliked subdeacons) receive from the chalice by taking it in hand and drinking from it. And, like deacons, that they are ordained inside the iconostasis, as are deacons, presbyters, and episkops, and unlike subdeacons, lectors, cantors, and acolytes.

Both terms for ordination-installation and for ordination-proper have been used for the order of deaconess.

Right. Deaconesses were never ordained. Not in the sense that we use the word “ordination” It was an “installation” into an office but that vocabulary distinction was not always made in the ancient Church because it wasn’t necessary–everyone knew that they weren’t ordained to the clergy.

For the record, the Magisterium of the Catholic Church has yet to determine if early deaconesses received the sacrament of Holy Orders. A five-year study was recently performed by the Vatican, and it failed to reach a definitive conclusion in either direction. Thus, the matter remains in the realm of theological opinion.

This survey is built on a false premise. It assumes that the practice of the non-ordination of women can be changed. Fact: this is a matter of doctrine (not policy) and therefore can NOT be changed.

    YES. I am a woman and studied in a Protestant seminary for three years with an eye toward the Episcopal priesthood. Intensive study into Church History and theology led me to repent and convert to Eastern Orthodoxy. I came to appreciate the authority of the Catholic Church, and came into the Greek Catholic Church several years ago.

    ** The Church needs to get deeper into teaching history and theology so as to convert those who support the irrational change toward undermining the inherent dignity of men and women, by confusing and merging their God-given differences. Viva la difference!**

    Yes. Such a change would radically alter the whole Gospel the Church preaches. It would definitely be dangerous to souls. Witness what has happened in several Protestant denominations where women have been granted “Holy Orders.”

I still don’t understand the purpose of this survey.

Women can NEVER EVER be ordained and that will not change and all Catholics must believe that.

Therefore what’s the point in polling Catholics. The answers must be the same.
