CONCERNING THE TEACHING CONTAINED IN ORDINATIO SACERDOTALIS RESPONSUM AD DUBIUM

Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith

Dubium: Whether the teaching that the Church has no authority whatsoever to confer priestly ordination on women, which is presented in the Apostolic Letter Ordinatio Sacerdotalis to be held definitively, is to be understood as belonging to the deposit of faith.

Responsum: In the affirmative.

This teaching requires definitive assent, since, founded on the written Word of God, and from the beginning constantly preserved and applied in the Tradition of the Church, it has been set forth infallibly by the ordinary and universal Magisterium (cf. Second Vatican Council, Dogmatic Constitution on the Church Lumen Gentium 25, 2). Thus, in the present circumstances, the Roman Pontiff, exercising his proper office of confirming the brethren (cf. Lk 22:32), has handed on this same teaching by a formal declaration, explicitly stating what is to be held always, everywhere, and by all, as belonging to the deposit of the faith.

The Sovereign Pontiff John Paul II, at the Audience granted to the undersigned Cardinal Prefect, approved this Reply, adopted in the ordinary session of this Congregation, and ordered it to be published.

OP, you might have included in your survey a question about how often the responder attends Mass and whether or not they are involved in ministry in their parish. At least that way you’d have a better idea of who is saying ‘yes’ and who is saying ‘no’.

Mass attendance every Sunday, Holy Day, once a week and when opportunities arise.
I deliver Communion on first Fridays, am a reader, and assist at religious ed.

The late Pope John Paul II spoke on this issue and the matter is settled.
I respectfully disagree with the notion that the Church had no other choice in the matter:

Matthew 16, verse 19 Jesus said to Peter: “I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven”.
That, pretty much - in my humble opinion - says that the pope has a blank check (the ultimate power) to do just about anything he chooses to do - that, coupled with the dogma of infalibility (in matters of faith & morals - matters of the sacred priesthood surely fall into those categories) would have enabled the Church to consider women for the priesthood. However, the pope chose to do otherwise - so, as I said, - the matter is settled.
By the same token, any succeeding pontiff can reverse that rule - using the same biblical authority!
(So, maybe, the matter isn’t as ‘settled’ as I thought it was).

Matters of dogma, unlike matters of discipline, are part of divine revelation, and therefore can NEVER be reversed.

    Don’t Change. And incidently, it’s not merely a belief, but infallible teaching by virtue of the ordinary magisterium and confirmed by Ordinatio Sacerdotalis and the related Responsum ad Dubium.

  3. Of course not. Who am I to place my judgement over God’s? Btw, it is “Holy Orders” and it includes both the priesthood and diaconate.
  4. Yes. Every catholic has the duty to discern what their vocation is. Religious take vows too, not just priests and deacons.
  5. They shouldn’t change and indeed they cannot change it. Any pope that tried would be prevented by the Holy Spirit.
  6. Of course. They are attempting a coup de etat against God himself. Not just wrong but foolish.
  7. It won’t harm the Church because it won’t happen. If individuals or even parishes, diocese or even whole countries try it, they will simply cease to be catholic in the process. Fighting God’s will is like fighting gravity - you can’t succeed, you only suffer the consequences.
Survey questions often betray the attitudes of the asker. Yours seem to imply that the Vatican controls the content of catholic teaching. This is a view entirely foreign to catholicism. It would appear to be a confusion between US Constitutional law and religious revelation. The Church is not a democracy nor a republic. Christ, God incarnate came to earth to save us, gave us a wealth of teachings and gave us a Church to SAFEGUARD those teaching. The Church cannot simply adapt teaching to the feelings or reasoning of her members. Her duty is to proclaim the deposit of faith left to us by Christ and his disciples.

…quite simply, the sacraments are instituted by Christ and humans cannot make changes to them.

You are wrong. The Church has NO authority to ordain women. The matter IS settled and can NEVER change.
